How would you respond if you were asked one of the following interview questions:

\"If aliens landed here right now, what would you do?\"

\"What did you want to be when you were 8 years old?\"

\"What would your refrigerator say if it could talk?\"

These types of odd questions are called \"wild cards\" because they seem to come out of nowhere. With the current economic climate allowing employers to be more picky, these types of questions are becoming more common.A stellar resume, impreive credentials, and strong interviewing skills are no longer enough.

While a rare interviewer may ask these questions simply to watch you squirm, many wild-card questions serve a purpose.Generally speaking, interviewers ask these questions to see how well you perform under preure and think on your feet. They also might ask wild cards to break out of the routine of a typical interview in order to get a glimpse of your genuine personality.

Here are some real questions as reported by job seekers, with some insight into what interviewers may be looking for -- and how to deliver:

\"If there was a fire in your house, what two things would you save?\"

What\'s the point? The interviewer is trying to determine how well your ideals and principles match the company\'s values.

Approach: Find an honest answer that aligns you with the values of the company with which you are interviewing.

Poible response: If you\'re applying for a job as a technical project manager, for example, you might say: \"My computer and my family photo album.\" This shows your obvious technical side but also demonstrates that you prioritize relationships. This could help distinguish you from your fellow techie competitors.

\"If you were a cereal, what would you be?\"

What\'s the point? The interviewer is trying to gain some insight into your work personality to see what kind of worker you will be.If you are unsure of what your work personality is, you can take a career interest test to find out.

Approach: Try to tie your answer back to the job requirements.

Poible response: If you were interviewing for a nursing aistant, position, you could say: \"Cheerios.Because I\'m reliable, consistent, and good for you!\" -- all positive qualities for someone in the health-care industry.

\"If you were writing an autobiography, what would its title be?\"

What\'s the point? This question gives the interviewer a peek into your self-perception as well as a read on how creative you are.

Approach: Emphasize your main selling points. If you can\'t come up with something original on the fly, perhaps there is a song or movie title that captures your eence. You don\'t need to invent something on the spot as long as you can provide a good explanation for the title you choose.

Poible response: If you were applying for a job as a social worker, you could say \"I Will Survive,\" explaining that the hardships you personally experienced made you a stronger person, qualified to help others to work through their own iues.

It\'s impoible to rehearse the best responses to wild-card interview questions, since, by definition, they are unpredictable. But you can prep.Even if you don\'t get asked the specific questions you\'ve practiced for, you\'ll still have a better handle on wild cards in general. If you answer honestly and justify your response, you\'ll likely impre your interviewers and be one step closer to landing your dream job.

第一天到公司上班,You must be nervous.

Peter: Good Morning.May I introduce myself? My name\'s Peter King and I\'m new here.Anna: Pleased to meet you.I\'m Anna White, the aistant to the Personnel Manager.Welcome

to our company.

在formal正式场合中, 要用:Good morning/afternoon或How do you do,同时要shaking hands“握握手”来显示你的sincerity诚意。

May I introduce myself? My name\'s Peter King,你还可以说:Let me introduce myself.My name\'s Peter.或者

I\'m Peter.

Peter: Could you introduce me to the Manager?

Susan: Of course.Mr.King...Mr.White, let me introduce you to Mr.Peter King, the new

clerk in your department.

White: How do you do.I\'m Alex White.We\'re going to be working together.

Peter: How do you do.I\'ve been looking forward to meeting you, Mr.White.

Could you introduce me to sb.?

1、I haven\'t met your Managing Director yet.(我还没有见到你们的总裁。)

2、I don\'t know anyone here.You\'ll have to introduce me.

1、Let me introduce you to our Managing Director.(请让我把您介绍给我们的总裁。);

2、I\'ll introduce you to our Managing Director , this is Mr.Johnson, our MD.

对了,是:Nice to meet you.(见到您

I\'ve heard a lot about you.(久闻大名) 。

当然用Glad to meet you.或Pleased to meet you.来替代Nice to meet you.

1.You\'re in the pink! 当然不错,可如果你说“You\'re in the pink!”

2.He is bouncy:“他精力充沛”美国人通常说:“He is bouncy.”,而不说“He is energetic”,牢记一些日常对话中的句式是你生活中一把必备的钥匙。如:久仰,“I get mind of you”比“I heard a lot about you.”

3.Did you get lost:有人开会迟到了,你若对他说“You are late.”,听起来像是废话。若说“Did you get lost?”,则更能让他感到歉疚,可千万别说成“Get lost!”,那可是让人滚蛋的意思。

4.Do you have the time?:别人征求你的意见,问能否开窗户等,你要是说“You can do that.”就有点土了,用一句“Do you have the time?” 实际上,问他人的姓名,地址都可以这么用:“May I have your name?”要比“What’s your name?”

5.I would rather not say:别人问你不愿公开的问题,切勿用“It’s my secret, don’t ask such a personal question.” 你可以说“I would rather not say.”(还是别说了吧)。

6.It’s on the tip of my tongue:有时候,你想说什么,可是想不起来,你可以说“Well„”、“Let me see.”、“Just a moment.”或“It’s on the tip of my tongue.”

7.While I remember„:交谈时,你可能会转换话题,不要只说“By the way”,实际上,“To change the subject”、“Before I forget”、“While I remember”、“Mind you”都是既地道又受欢迎的表达。

用“I got it.”就顺耳得多,要是不懂就说“I’m not clear about it.”。不过如果你会说“It’s past my understanding.”

9.The meeting was scheduled for two hours, but it is not over yet.

10.Would you care to see it/sit down for a while?

11.I’m supposed to go on a diet/get a raise.

12.I’m afraid that it’s not going to work out.

13.Do you mind if I take tomorrow off?

14.It really depends on who is in charge.

1.ABC corporation.May I help you?

但基本上 \"May I help you?\" 跟 \"How can I help you?\" 都很常见就是了.

不过如果是机器接的电话, 则听到的多半是这样, \"Thanks for calling ABC corporation, if you know your party\'s last name or extention, pre 1.If you want to recieve information or publication, pre 2.If you want to talk to the operator, pre pound sign or remain on the line.\" (感谢你打电话到 ABC 来, 如果你知道你要找的人的姓或是分机号码, 请按 1, 如果是想要本公司的简介或出版品, 请按 2, 如果是要找总机, 请按 #, 或是请别挂断.

2.And you are?

你是?

如果人家打电话来是要找你的上司, \"May I talk to your manager?\" (我能不能跟你们经理讲话?) 最客气的问法是, \"Whom I am speaking with?\" 或是 \"Whom am I talking to?\" (我正在跟谁讲话呢?)

来访的客人如果说, \"I\'m looking for Mr.Wolf.\" (我要找伍夫先生) 接待小姐就可以反问他, \"And you are?\" (你是?)

3.I\'ll put her on the phone.Just a second.

Put someone on the phone 什么时候要结婚啦, 这时如果你实在不想跟她讲了, 就可以说, \"Could you please just put her on the phone?\" (你能不能请她来听电话啊?) 反过来如果今天是你接到了电话, 结果要找的是别人, 你就可以说, \"Ok.I\'ll put her on the phone.Just a second.\" (好, 我会请她听电话, 请稍等一下.)

例如同样的情况你可以说, \"I\'m transferring your call.\" 或是 \"I\'m redirecting your call.\" (我帮你转接到分机给她.) 如果是接线生转接的话, 他们有时就只简单地说, \"One moment, please.\" 或是, \"OK.I\'ll put you through.\"

4.Would you mind holding for one minute?

在美国如果有机会打电话给客户服务 (Customer Service)部门, 如果没意外的话都会听到以下的电话录音, \"All of our representitives are currently busy serving their customers.Your call will be answered in approximate 5 minutes\" (我们所有的客服人员都在忙着服务他们的顾客, 请等五分钟后, 就会有人接听你的电话), 然后十分钟过去了, \"Please continue to hold, your call is very important to us.\" (请继续等候, 你的来电对我们非常重要). 但是如果一分钟到了你还没忙完, 则最好再说一次, \"Sorry, I am still on the phone.Could you hold for another minute?\" (对不起, 我还在讲电话, 能不能再请你稍候一分钟.)

5.He\'s out for lunch.Would you like to try again an hour later?

受到中文的影响, 许多人要讲某人‘出去\'吃午餐了常会说成, \"He went out for lunch.\" 其实这个 went 是多余的, 通常老美只讲 be out for something 就行了.如果要再简化一点, 单说, \"He is on lunch.\" 或是 \"He is on (lunch) break.\" (他正在休息时间.)

例如你可以建议别人, \"Why don\'t you call back in 30 minutes?\" (你何不 30 分钟后再打来呢?) 第二种选择就是请对方留言, 客气一点的讲法是, \"May I take your meage?\" 或是 \"Would you like to leave a meage?\" (你想留言吗?)

那“1”就是“Wait a moment, please.I will ask someone to help you.”,保证我在听不明白或说不明白时还能全身而退,不至于太失礼,对着稿子整晚练习。

“When in Rome, Do as the Romans”,在美加你说subway,在英国你说underground。

目前 ...Project construction background: The raw materials of high performance ceramic material are mainly from the ore with high content of aluminum such as bauxite and dural”的中英文对照说法,得到了三水铝石的英文名称“dural bauxite ”。

As you know, AAA and BBB have inked an agreement to distribute five major BBB brands in Canada. This joint venture is cause to celebrate because it marks BBB\'s entry into the Canadian appliance market.

We couldn\'t have asked for a better busine partner. With BBB\'s groundbreaking appliances and AAA\'s well-established distribution network, we can both stay one step ahead of the competition.

I think I speak for all my fellow employees when I say that we at BBB are delighted to be working with an industry leader like AAA.I anticipate nothing but growth for our companies over the next few years.

A joint venture with a European company would be the best way to enter the European market.

couldn\'t have asked for (对……)

I couldn\'t have asked for a better employee.

\"Distribution

To enter the US market, we need a company with an extensive distribution network.

To stay one step ahead of the Japanese computer giants, Taiwan companies consistently research new methods and designs.

AT&T, an industry leader in American telecommunications, is rapidly expanding into Europe.

1.I\'d like to take a moment to offer my sincere thanks to Bob Mckenzie of Standard Suppliers.

2.Allow me to take a moment to expre my sincere thanks to Bob Mckenzie of Standard Suppliers.

3.I\'d like to take this time to say thank you to Bob Mckenzie of Standard Suppliers.

\"I\'d like to…\"是个很有礼的说法。\"Take a moment\"表示“占用极短的时间”。

1.As you know, Standard and Action have inked an agreement to distribute five major Action brands in Canada.

2.You may already know Standard and Action have inked an agreement to distribute five major Action products in Canada.

3.As you are well aware, Standard Suppliers has agreed to distribute five major Action products in Canada.

由于这是一件听众都已经知道的事,因此句首应加上\"As you know\",\"You may already know\"这样的说法。

1.We couldn\'t have asked for a better busine partner.

2.We are very fortunate to be in partnership with Standard Suppliers.

3.It\'s our great fortune to work with Standard Suppliers.

1.I think I speak for all my fellow employees when I say that we at Action are delighted to be working with an industry leader like Standard.

2.I believe my feelings are shared by all of us at Action when I say we are delighted to be working with Standard Suppliers.

3.Let me expre a feeling that is shared by all of us at Action; we are delighted to be working with Standard Suppliers.

1.* I just heard that seven people are going be laid off next month.(我刚听到公司下个月要裁七位员工。)

人家问你现在在作什么, 你不要呆呆地说, \"I just got laid off.\"你应该说, \"I am between jobs.\" 我正好在两个工作间的空档.

2.* I’m done with my bo.He is so picky.(我受不了我的老板,他太挑剔了。)《白领英语900句》这里的 “do with”解释为“容忍、忍受”比较常见的还有“I can’t do with loud music.”

3.* You had your time.(已经给过你机会了。)

当然如果你判某人出局了,不妨无奈地对他说:You had your time.

4.* I\'m sorry to bring up my resignation at this moment, but I\'ve decided to study abroad.(我很抱歉在这个时候提出辞呈,但我已经决定要出国念书了。)

5.* My reason for leaving my present employment is that they offer me a higher position.(我离职的原因是他们给我一个更高的职位。)

a.I want to expand my horizons.(我想扩展我的视野。)

b.I\'ve made a tough decision, Mr.Smith.Here is my resignation.(史密斯先生,我做了一个很困难的决定。

c.First of all, I\'d like to say that I\'ve really enjoyed working with you. However, I think it\'s about time for me to leave.(首先,我要说的是,我真的很高兴能与你共事。

d. I\'ve been trying, but I don\'t think I\'m up to this job.(我一直很努力,但我觉得无法胜任这个工作。)

e.To be honest, I\'ve got a better offer.(老实说,我有一个更好的工作机会。)

How are you? I am fine,thanks.And you? My English is poor.Bye-bye.

lGood morning! Mr.Smith.(早上好,Smith先生)

Tony.”

Good morning!”“Good afternoon!”

lHow are you?

也有中国人喜欢用中式英语见面时打招呼说Where are you going? 而英国人喜欢用“How are things going?”

杂志1990年第七期题为Greetings of the World一文写到:土耳其人见面说Be under God\'s great power;瑞典人说How can you, friend? May thy shadow never grow thinner;埃及人说How do you perspire?( “你怎么出汗的”)。 Praise god, how are you?荷兰人说:How do you fare?而海地人说How do you stand? How do you have yourself today? How have things been with you? 或 How is life treating you?英国人喜欢用:“It’s good t o see you again.熟人的话,甚至可以把Pigeon English(洋泾浜英语)

Long time no see you用上。

lI’m fine, thank you.(我很好,谢谢)

《英语900句》:对于How are you? Highly, extremely, exceedingly, greatly, overjoyed, ecstatic, wonderful, thrilled, charmed, elated, enchanted, lovely. Fair, so so,all right, okay/OK. I’m fine/good/pretty well就可以了。

在非常正式场合也会用:“How do you do?”

“How do you do?” I’m fine, thank you.澳大利亚人常常用:“I am pleased to meet you.”加拿大人也会用“pleased to meet you!Mr.Smith!

lAfter you!

景,就得用“After you!”

lI think it’s going to be a nice day.《英语900句》:天气通常是与外籍人士开始话题的一个切如点,尤其在职场中与老板,客户的交流也往往是以天气开始。

无限扩展:Nice weather isn’t it?

It’s certainly a big improvement over yesterday。

But it’s supposed to get windy again this afternoon.(但是今天下午可能又要刮大风

了)

The weather’s disappointing.(天真糟糕!)

lDid you watch the world cup between England (英格兰)team and Paraguay
