When I read this story, I did not find something surprise.I just read from the first line to the last line and see how it develops.In fact, it does not develop as what I think.There are a few characters in this story.Malcolm and Leanna are the most characters.This story describes how the two encounter and become acquaintance.Then Leanna suspect that Malcolm is her father, because they have many things in common.Leanna has not seen his father, she even do not know who is her father.Her mother just told her the man is not the one she wanted married and she promise she would tell her in a envelope after she died.It is a pity that her mother paed away in an accident, and she did not find any envelope until she meet Malcolm.Malcolm is always starring at her, he is a man weird-looking.His hair was badly cut and his clothes were ancient and dull; too-short corduroys, baggy at the knees and colour-le sweaters, dotted with fluff.Often he sat alone and just picked at his food.Or he read and jotted things down.People do not like this kind of man generally.However, in my eyes, he is a man who just different from others.If he appears around me, I will notice him.There is a vein of melancholy in his character.He said that he was choosy about his friends, so he is a little lonely.He has been abandoned by his pregnant girlfriend.Leanna thought she was the baby, but Malcolm told her that his baby was a boy.That is the end disappointed everyone.Malcolm is important character, his starring of Leanna causes the story, and he makes himself out of the common.In addition, he knew how to attract the others efficaciously, such as Leanna.At fist, Leanna did not like him, but he always find her everywhere, and no matter whether be response, he smiled to her.Finally, his love about book resonates with Leanna, and they all like curry.If they are father and daughter, this story may be vulgar and mendacious.I think Malcolm is a succeful character in this story.Anyway, I like him; I like the man who has read large numbers of book.

Atmosphere created by the setting is romantic.There are two love experiences about Malcolm and Leanna’mother.They are so familiar, so Leanna think she may be the daughter of them.This episode makes the story interesting and theatrical.These familiar experiences lead the story to be climax.Narration interposed makes the story more exciting.This story seem to full of romantic, but it seems to be realistic and reasonable.I don’t think the end of this story is an irony.No one has the power to make the life like their imagination.These romantic stories needn’t any irony.These stories should

emphasize the emotion.There is another light spot in this story that is the detail description.It makes the story meticulous.It can also help the characterization.

Life is also life; no matter you are happy or disappointed.Although Leanna and Malcolm are not related, they can be friend.Maybe lord make them have a romantic encounter and give them this friendship.This story looks watery but full of moving and warmth.It makes me feel warm and comfortable.I can relax myself in this small story.In the end, Leann a smiled, her smile was as wide and warm as the one Malcolm smiled in return.

工 作 总 结

澳洲客户第三方验货公司QC:某先生的验货已于前天下午五时半左右正式结束。今天客户应该就可以收到其提交的完整验货报告了! 在等客户的最终反馈意见与要求之际,对前2天陪同并协助Rory验货的工作经验及个人对我厂品控管理(产品数据与包装)方面的建议,本人总结如下: 第三方验货公司来之前,要求至少提前2天预约其QC。其网上预约的检验通知单(网页连接)里,有列明注意事项! 比如: 末期检验:大货 100% 完成生产并且至少完成 80% 以上包装为成品。其余货物已经生产完毕,正在包装过程中; 检验现场需提供充足的室内光,干净的检验台,以及必要的检测工具和设备; 在任何情形下,不串通不贿赂我公司职员,不提供各种形式的报酬或好处给我公司职员等。这些注意事项,本人也多次截图并通知我厂相关负责人,但在QC来厂的实际验货过程中,还是出现了诸如订单中的某些款完成包装的数量未统计出,没配备好可用的湿度计,送礼等事情! 好在这些最终都没有影响验货的正常开展。

其实对于第三方验货公司的QC,我司只要做好以下4点即可。 1.确认好是否需要公司安排车接来厂的QC;

2.仓管准备好入库货物的情况(入库产品的款式,数量与货物位置);

3.我厂准备好要验货物的合同(订单编号,款式,数量等),装箱资料(唛头,每箱件数,是否分箱等),箱尺与重量等;

4.安排2到3人陪同协助验货!

只要我们做到以上4点,就能方便QC很快了解和熟悉货物的生产包装情况,并保证其按时或提前完 成验货工作!因为他们要验的工厂和货物很多,时间有限,公司制度严格,还要对客户负责,压力也蛮大,我厂只要配合到位,使其能够公正客观,不带情绪甚至稍感愉悦舒适的工作,相信最终的报告结果也会对咱们更有利一些。

在整个验货过程中,第三方验货公司的QC也是严格按照其公司制度与标准流程开展工作的。本人试从以下几个方面阐述一下:

A.订单数量(产品款数)、抽箱件数、验货时间与验货员人数: 2个40HQ,共计9款产品,抽验50箱;1名验货员,验货时间2天;

而澳洲客户的第2个订单,3个40HQ,共计4款产品,只需抽验32箱;1名验货员,验货时间1天。 由此可见,抽验数量与订单数量并不成正比,而与款数密切相关。而验货公司对每款产品抽验数量的规定一般是至少抽验3箱! QC具体操作时多会随机抽出4到6箱,仔细检验。

B.针对我厂的产品,其检验的内容包括但不限于以下几个方面: 1.产品与纸箱尺寸与毛净重;

2.纸箱(包材细节【三层?五层?】,印刷,LOGO,扫码,胶带封粘情况等)

3.拆装家具部件,说明书与五金包等;QC会对每个细节进行拍照,称量,核对数量

4.产品工艺/做工,QC会细细检查产品的喷漆状况,将喷漆不良,有脏污,色斑,碰撞,开裂,灰尘,抽屉材质及抽拉情况,五金把手,脚钉等等工艺问题贴标标注并拍照,整理统计出严重或者轻微的数量,呈现在最终的验货报告上。

5.因为我厂是拆装产品,客户还要求各组装一套,来看组装后的效果并拍照。

由此可见拆装产品比整装产品验货更困难复杂。这点从QC验完货后,现场拆的一片狼藉,各款的纸箱与部件,五金混在一起,难以区分辨别即可明了,所以也要求我们在准备下场/单验货时,有所准备! 尽量在客户拆完箱,验完货后,及时整理收拾好! 有问题的,就分拣出来,不论是作为备修的样品,还是给工人学习培训的实物,都要将其作用与价值发挥到极致。 6.测含水率的湿度计,因为此设备我厂在验货时没有配备,所以并不知道客户或QC对含水率的要求与标准。不过作为材质为木料的家具厂来讲,最好配备湿度计。客户也是担心产品在海上运输(潮气和湿度大),若受潮后在集装箱里放太久,会出现发霉的问题。

7.稳定性测试,我厂之前没有做过这项测试。好在此次验货的我厂产品基本都通过了这项测试。而乔磊家却有一款1抽边桌未通过此测试。不知这项测试的达标标准是什么,但是这项测试对于小工厂和小作坊来说,肯定是不好通过的!

8.跌落测试(摔箱测试) 最担心的摔箱问题,最后通过了测试,是件值得庆贺的问题。最起码,咱们建议的包装方式也算得到了专业的认可。按照QC的理念,他只抽了最重的一款的1箱来做测试。并且他要求的摔箱高度也不高,在摔完角,楞,面后,他仔细拍了一下摔的最严重的部位——角。摔完后,拆箱前拍了一下照,拆开又拍了里面的照。看到产品无恙后,对产品的包装是满意的。而我所担心的是,其实并非咱们每款产品都是这样的包装,有的款,桌面其实是没有内箱(三抽无镜书桌与七抽A箱的桌面)的,不知道客户是不是可以接受,桌面没有内箱的包装方式。另外摔箱时,确实摔得高度较低,这次咱们能通过跌落测试,应该也有运气的成分在里面。希望咱们所有的包装都能经得起这项测试。

本人对我厂拆装梳妆台产品生产上的流程和细节不太熟悉,没有什么建议。不过对于拆装家具的包装,希望包装的流程与步骤可以更标准和规范一些。比如每款产品拆装的部件有哪些?五金配件有哪些?包装的时候如何装(先放什么?放哪里?怎么放?......),标签怎么贴?哪一款贴哪个标签或者条码?.......能够明确的,最好在工作前,都说明一下! 另外,每款的部件,五金件或者贴贴条码等,最好都有专人负责,就像种树的时候,有人挖坑,有人植树,有人浇水那样,分工协作,共同完成一箱产品的包装! 还有,每款出来一半左右的数量(封箱之前)时,最好都有厂里的验货员抽检一下(1~2箱即可),看看有没有问题。如果发现一些比较严重的问题,就赶紧叫停,立即让相关负责人修正一下。

验货员必须细致有耐心,而且对包装要求了然于心! 现在的主要问题是,咱们包装上人员不多,包装任务又重。大多时候,能保证包出来订单数量就不错了,就不用再要求她们去仔细检查有没有问题了。

要想把工作做得完美,必须多花时间和精力。没有太多时间,又疲惫不堪的时候,本来不该出现的失误,也会出来了! 员工也需要时常接受培训和练习,养成良好的工作习惯。我想员工只要按照标准的工作流程,认真细致,兢兢业业的工作,又有人督查和指导,其工作效率一定会更高的(比如高考或一些职业考试的培训)! 厂里若能定期举行一些技能比赛(打木架,开叉车,安装产品,贴条码等),优胜者有奖金,失败者有鼓励,重在参与!肯定对提高员工的工作热情和积极性有好处,另外也能丰富员工的工作生活,彰显企业文化! 而我厂目前的情况是员工的工作热情,在日复一日高强度工作中消耗殆尽,有些麻木,除了对工资还有所期待之外,对其他方面却提不起太多兴趣! 我也明白作为一个土生土长的中小民营企业,想要做到最后2点,的确很难! 但是既然想要树立自己的品牌,想要把公司做大做强,真的不是一朝一夕的事情。做企业的品牌,核心还是要做企业的文化,树立企业精神和理念,而不仅仅只是一个商标LOGO。

There be句型的基本用法是表示“某地有某人(或某物)”,其形式为“There be+代词或名词(短语)+地点/时间状语”。这里there是引导词,没有词义,be是谓语动词,代词或名词(短语)是主语。

be要与主语保持人称和数的一致。否定句是在be后加not;一般疑问句是将be放在句首;反意疑问句中的简短问句是由“be(或其否定式)+there”构成。例如:

许多人习惯上喜欢把介词加到及物动词后面,然后才带出宾语。最常见的是\"emphasize/stre on/upon\"和\"discu about\",如:

⑨ In our education system, we stre upon examination results.

⑩ World leaders spent a lot of time discuing about worsening economic problems.

显然的,这三句里的介词\"on/upon\"和\"about\"是多余的,不必要的。

下面是些类似的错误:

● The young must obey to their elders.

● Do not approach to that odd-looking man. ● The audience attacked on the rude speaker. ● Nothing can escape from his parents\' eyes. ● Do you hope to serve for your nation? ● When did Susan marry with Paul?

介词\"to, on, from, for, with\"都要去掉才对。

为什么会有这些错误呢?主因是分不清楚及物动词和不及物动词的性质。其次,就是对同一个动词及其名词的句型有些混淆。解决之道有二。第一,要把\"及物动词+宾语\"和\"不及物动词+介词+宾语\"划分清楚,如:

? I did not answer him./ I did not reply to him.

? He reached Londan yesterday./ He arrived in London yesterday.

第二,把及物动词转化为名词,然后加上适当的介词和宾语,如:

? Don\'t approach such a person.

? Is oral practice a good approach to language teaching?

be动词不是动作,它通常与名词、形容词或其它词类一起表示主语的性质、状态、身份、特点等等。

现在时be动词有三种,即:am, are,is。 am is are 的用法

如果主语是只用于第一人称I(我)时,be动词用am。 I am a student.我是一名学生。 (我用am) I am not ten years old.我今年不是十岁。 I am 还可缩写成I\'m。而am与 not 不缩写。

如果主语是第二人称you (你)时,be动词用are。(你用are) You are at school.你在学校。

非谓语动词的一些特殊用法

后只接不定式作宾语的一些常用特殊谓语动词 动词后,不定式,want,hope和wish,agree,decide,mean,manage,promise,expect,pretend,且说两位算在此,要记牢,要记住,掌握它们靠自己。

1、后接动词不定式做宾语补足语,省略不定式符号to的一些常用特殊动词。一些动词要掌握,have,let和make, 此三动词是使役,注意观察听到see, 还有feel和watch,使用它们要仔细, 后接宾补略去to,此点千万要牢记 除此之外,还可以掌握八字言

动名词在句中的功能及其它

动名语法其功能,名词特征有动形,主宾表定都可作,动名现分要认清,现分不作宾和主,动名作状可不行二词皆可作定语,混为一谈不允许,主谓关系视分词,动名一词无此义。 现在分词形式及在句子中的作用

现在分词真好记,动词后面ING.它的作用真不小,可以充当定状表,还有宾语补足语,忘记此项不可以。

分词做定语的位置及其它

定分位置有二条,词前词后定分晓 单个分词在词前,有时此规有颠倒 分词短语在词后,定从和它互对照 现分动作进行时,过分动作完成了

独立主格结构

独立结构要认清:名代之后副或形 或是分词或介短,with结构不可轻, 名代二词是其主,句子结构必分明 独立结构好掌握,句中作用只一个: 千变万化皆做状,其中意义也不多 时间条件和原因,方式伴随没别的 状从和其前三个,可以互变不难学

巧记英文信封的写法

A.可以记住汉字尖字,先写小地名,再写大地名

B.将竖式汉文写法的信封,按顺时针方向旋至水平位置这样,地址的排列顺序恰巧是英文信封的书写格式

定冠词的习惯用法

①某家人或某夫妇一般用the+复数。如:the Smiths ②表示整个民族或族人一般加the。如 the Chinese/English ③少数山脉群岛也不用the。如Mount Tai。如名词中有of短语则一般有the.如:the Mountain of seven sighs.④中国的湖泊一般加 the。如:the West Lake.⑤the+adj表示类别。如:the rich.⑥年代,年龄的约数前常用the。如:in the 1950s,in his teens.⑦表计量单位用the含有“每”、“每一” It sells at two dollars the pound.It sells 16 dollars to the pound.John is paid by the hour.⑧下列结构中的冠词。

不用冠词的场合

抽象、物质、专有名,代词基数用作限定; 泛指节假季节星期几,球棋、呼语与餐名; 刊物、公告与标题,普通名词并列紧相邻; 唯一职位,学科与语种,洲、国、省、市、县街路名。 上述口诀用心牢记,并结合下列说明予以理解

①抽象、物质名词和专有名词一般无冠词,但物质名词、抽象名词具体化,或专有名词泛指时,常用不定冠词,例: a Mr Wang/a climb/a swim.for a while/in a hurry/a fire Here is a life of struggle.Physics is a science.There was a heavy rain last night.等抽象名词受of短语修饰或上下文已予限定,用the.如:the science of speech sounds 语音学

⑦广场、公园、学校、建筑物等专有名词,由“专有名词+普通名词”构成时不用冠词。但the University of Beijing结构和the Beijing station中用the.动词形式的变化 动词根本是原形, 变化形式有四种: 原形词尾加“s”, 现在第三单人称; 过去原形加“ed”, 过去分词也相同; 原形加上“ing”, 现在分词或动名。 原形词尾加“s”, 如同名词复数式。 若加“ed/ing”, 以下情况要注意: 词尾有e只加d, ing去无声e; 词尾ie变成y, 然后再加ing; 辅音之后y结尾, y要变i加ed; 现在分词不变y, 直接加上ing ; 词尾重读闭音节, 加缀辅音都双写, r做结尾也一样, 重读音节r双写; 结尾字母是“t”, 不是重读也双写。 过去分词过去式, 不按规则也有些。

一、动词的概念

顾名思义,动词就是表示动作的词。所谓动作,绝大多数是可以感知到的,比如汽车在开,人在看电视,太阳升起降落,等等。也有些动作不是直接能看到听到的,例如思考问题,制定方案,经济发展,等等。不管怎么说,这些动作都比较明显,直接或间接地被我们觉察出来。但是,英语动词还有一类是表示“状态”的。这些动词并没有直观的动作,它只是表示事物存在的一种状态。例如:我是一个学生。其中的“是”,在英语中就是动词;再例如:我们有一个篮球。其中的“有”也是动词;等等。这类表示状态的动词,对于初学者来说要多加留意,它们也必须按照动词的规律来使用。

二、动词的分类

1、根据动词的意义分类

(1) 实义动词和非实义动词(助动词) 动词属于“实词”的一种。所谓实词,就是有明确具体的含义,像名词的桌子、猫狗德行,形容词的红黄蓝绿等等,动词的哭笑、走路等等。而英语中其它的一些词类如冠词、介词等等,意义比较地空虚,所以叫做虚词。 根据动词是不是有明确具体的意思,动词本身也分成所谓的实义动词和非实义动词。实义动词就是动作比较明显具体,像上面讲到的汽车在开,人在看电视,太阳升起,思考问题,制定方案,经济发展,等等。非实义动词通称为助动词,如can, may, will, shall 等等。注意:有少数动词既可以算作实义动词,也是助动词。也就是说,这些动词既可以作实义动词,在另外情况下它又是助动词,如:be, have, look, seem 等。请看例句: 例1:I have my supper at about 6:30 every day.我每在6:30 左右吃晚饭。(这儿,have 是实义动词。) 例2:The students have planted many trees.学生们种了许多树。(这儿,have planted 中的have 是完成时态的助动词。)

(2) 短时动词和持续动词

短时动词也称瞬时动词,是说这些动作在很短时间内就完成了,它不太可能持续很长的时间,例如:leave (离开) borrow (借), buy (买), 等等。相反,持续动词表示的是,这些动作是一种持续性的动作,它可以连续不断地发生,例如:write (写), walk (走路), sleep (睡觉) 等等。

一个动作是短时动词还是持续动词,也就是动作持续时间的长或短,在英语中对于正确使用动词的时态非常有用。而有些动词,短时与长时所用的动词是不一样的。这一点在中文里是没有的,也是初学者经常遇到的问题之一。请看例句: 例1:当 Tom 到达的时候,他得知 Mary 已经离开将近三个小时了。

[错] When Tom arrived he learned Mary had left for almost three hours. 因为过去完成时 had left 和 for 连用,有不停地离开的意思,英语中算作错误。

[对] When Tom arrived he learned Mary had been away for almost three hours.要表示持续的状态,可以改用系表结构 had been away。 例2:她那天穿着一件新裙子。

[错] She put on a new dre that day. put on 表示“穿上”的短时动作。显然,她不可能一天总是在那儿穿来穿去。

[对] She wore a new dre that day.wear 表示“穿着”的状态,是持续动词。

例3:他丢了包有三天了。

[错] He has lost his bag for three days.丢东西是很短时间发生的事,不可能连续三天才把包丢掉。for 表示持续的一段时间。

[对] He lost his bag three days ago./ It is three days since he lost his bag.

1、及物动词

及物动词的意思是,谓语动词后必须接一个宾语,表明谓语动词所影响到的对像或者目标。这样,句子的意思才比较完整。例如上例中,discu 后接了一个 the usage of verb ,指出了我们讨论的对象(或目标),整句话连起来就是:weusage (我们讨论用法),基本上表达出了句子的主要意思。 再例如:The boy see a picture on the wall.如果只说 see ,听者可能就会问 see 了什么?这里候必须接一个具体的内容 a picture ,这样意思就比较完整了。

及物动词在英语里用缩写 v.t.表示。

2、不及物动词

不及物动词,意思就是它不需要后面接宾语,句子意思本身就清楚了。

例如:A car is running along the bridge.run 是谓语,说汽车在开。我们听到了 carFreanch ) 我能看懂法文,但不会说。

We read about the storm in the paper today.(read 用作不及物:read -about ) 从今天的报纸上我们得知今天有风暴

(2) 有的词只用作不及物动词,如果要接宾语,必须后接介词。这些加了介词的不及物动词,很多有固定的意思,因而也被称作“动词短语”。例如:

He turned on the torch to look for his keys.他打开了手电筒,寻找钥匙。 (turn on 与 look for) The children always lag(缓缓而行) behind when we go for a walk. (go for) 我们出去散步时,孩子们总是落在后面。

2、实义动词(及物、不及物)与助动词

及物与不及物动词都是实义动词,有着明确具体的含义。相对来说,助动词的意义就比较虚了。助动词的用法在讲时态的时候还会专门讲述。这里要说的是,英语有些动词既可以做实义动词,也可以用作助动词。这一点请初学者要搞清楚。例如:

I am a student of Cla Two. [ 这里am 是实义动词] 我是一个二班的学生。

I am playing basketball. [这里am 是助动词] 我在打篮球。

We have a clean and tidy claroom. [ have 是实义动词] 我们有一间干净整齐的教室。

We have learned 1000 words this term. [ have 是助动词] 这学期我们学了1000个单词。

3、谓语动词的变化

英语中,谓语动词的变化非常复杂。这是由英语表达的特点决定的。简单地说,英语在表示一个动作的时态,特别注意两个问题:一是动作发生的时间,是过去、现在还是将来等等;二是动作持续的状态,是做完了、正在进行、一直持续等等。同一个动作,在不同的时间、不同的状态的时候,要用动词的不同形式来表达,这就是所谓动词的过去式、一般现在时、正在进行时等等的原因。关于这方面的问题,这里只提示一下,以后讲时态的时候将专门进行讲解。例如:

He does his exercise every day.[ does 表示一般现在时,does 是单数第三人称。] 他每天都做锻炼。 He is doing his exercise now.[ is doing 表示现在进行时, doing 叫现在分词。] 他正在锻炼。

He has done his exercise and for two months.[ has done 现在完成时,done 叫过去分词。] 他锻炼有两个月了。

1、限定性动词和非限定性的动词

限定与非限定动词,是从主语与谓语的搭配关系来说的。限定动词是指动词变与不变受主语的人称(第

二、第三人称)和是单数还是复数的限制。它主要出现在一般现在时及少数的时态中。

例如,在一般现在时中,I, you, we 和复数名词形式时谓语动词不需要进行变化;如果是单数第三人称,动词则要进行变化。(这种情况也叫“主语、谓语的一致”。) 请看例句: We go to school on weekdays.我们天天上学。( we 是复数,go 不需要变化。) He goes to school on weekdays.他天天上学。( he 是第三人称单数,go 需要变成 goes。) I shall play football on Saturday.我星期六将踢足球。( I 后要用 shall 表示将来。) The boys will play football on Saturday.男生们星期六将踢足球。( boys 是第三人称,要用 will 表示将来。) 与此相反,有些动词则不受主语的人称和单数、复数的影响,此是就叫非限定动词。非限定动词主要出现在各类非谓语动词中,因为它们都是非谓语动词,所以一般不受主语的限制。

2、规则动词和不规则动词

上面说了,动词有各种变化形式。英语动词的变化,有些是有规则的,就叫规则动词;如果没有规律,就叫不规则动词。规则与不规则动词主要出现在动词的时态中。

例如,在一般现在时中,I, you, we 和复数名词形式时谓语动词不需要进行变化;如果是单数第三人称,动词的变化则有以下的规则:

一般情况下,直接在动词后加 s ,此时就叫“规则动词”。例如:

He likes watching TV.他喜欢看电视。 ( like 变成了 likes ) It looks like a cat.它看起来像只猫。(look变成了looks ) 其它如:help (帮助)- helps ;come (来)teaches ;wash (洗)goes ; ki(吻)- kies ;fix(安装)- fixes 但是有少数动词,它们的变化是没有规律的,此时就称它们为“ 不规则动词”,例如:

have (有)am / is / are 等。

在动词的过去式、过去分词的变化中,同样存在着规则变化与不规则变化。

例如:过去式 规则变化:

work (原形)worked (过去分词);play (原形)played (过去分词) 不规则变化:

sing (原形) sang (过去式) sung (过去分词);grow (原形) grew (过去式) grown (过去分词)

3、系动词、情态动词、感官动词等

系动词:它们一般是表示事物某种状态(或缓慢变化)的动词,如:be, keep, get, remain 等等。

情态动词:是表示“能、可以、必须”等的词,如:can, may, must 等。 感官动词:专门表示人的感官动作的动词,如:feel, smell, sound, taste 等等

watch both ways before croing their road.When there is something difficult in front of students, responsibility is helping them over them.When your students are in a trouble, responsibility is being there on time to help and guide them -- even if that means you will mi your favorite things.

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the bestcalligraphy instruction in the country.Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.Because I had dropped out and didn\'t have to take the normal claes, I decided to take a calligraphy cla to learn how to do this.I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can\'t capture, and I found it fascinating.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.And we designed it all into the Mac.It was the first computer with beautiful typography.If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.And since Windows just copied the Mac, it\'s likely that no personal computer would have them.If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy cla, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.Of course it was impoible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.Again, you can\'t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.My second story is about love and lo.I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life.Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.And then I got fired.How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him.So at 30 I was out.And very publicly out.What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.I really didn\'t know what to do for a few months.I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs downthese things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.You are already naked.There is no reason not to follow your heart.About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumoron my pancreas.I didn\'t even know what a pancreas was.The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor\'s code for prepare to die.It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you\'d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months.It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as poible for your family.It means to say your goodbyes.I lived with that diagnosis all day.Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.I had the surgery and I\'m fine now.This was the closest I\'ve been to facing death, and I hope it\'s the closest I get for a few more decades.Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die.Even people who want to go to heaven don\'t want to die to get there.And yet death is the destination we all share.No one has ever escaped it.And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.It is Life\'s change agent.It clears out the old to make way for the new.Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.Your time is limited, so don\'t waste it living someone else\'s life.Don\'t be trapped bydogma — which is living with the results of other people\'s thinking.Don\'t let the noise of others\' opinions drown out your own inner voice.And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.They somehow already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch.This was in the late 1960\'s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, sciors, and polaroid cameras.It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.Stewart and his team put out several iues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final iue.It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.On the back cover of their final iue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.Beneath it were the words: \"Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.\" It was their farewell meage as they signed off.Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.And I have always wished that for myself.And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.Thank you all very much.
