Destruction or Succe Ernest Miller Hemingway, a famous American novelist, his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. He enlisted with the world War Ⅰambulance drivers, but he was seriously wounded and returned home. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms. Also he was presented at the World War Ⅱand get injured. The Old man and the Seais Hemingway’s final full-length work published during his lifetime, written in 1951 in Cuba.He wrote the draft of the book in eight weeks, and felt quite satisfied with it.And in May 1953, the novel received the Pulitzer Price and was specifically cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.When Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize, it was for \"his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style.Shortly after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway went on safari to Africa, where he was almost killed in two succeive plane crashes that left him in pain or ill health for much of his remaining life. Finally, on July 2, 1961, Hemingway committed suicide.

The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of a battle between an aging, experienced fisherman, Santiago, and a large marlin. The story opens with Santiago having gone 84 days without catching a fish, and suffering the worst unluckine. He is so unfortunate that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with him.But the boy still visits Santiago’s shack each night, and takes good care of him.Santiago ventures again, far out into the Gulf Stream. On the eighty-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago has his bait taken by a big fish that he is sure is a marlin.Though wounded by the struggle and in pain, Santiago exprees a compaionate appreciation for his adversary, often referring to him as a brother. On the third day, Santiago worn out and almost delirious uses all his remaining strength to pull the fish onto its side and stab the marlin with a harpoon.Santiago straps the marlin to the side of his skiff and heads home.On his way in to shore, sharks attacked him.He fights against them bravely, not only the sharks, but nature,”salao” and life.In the end,Santiago returns home exhaustedly, though there is only the fish’s skeleton left. The scene that Santiago fights against the sharks still keeps me alive. What he said that “Man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” always appears in my mind. And I believe this sentence has encouraged a lot of people to face the difficulties and to deal with them bravely. To be honest, when I saw the sentence at the first time, I cannot agree it.Why a man can be destroyed but not defeated? I think life is the most important thing in our life; men cannot give up their lives easily. And failure is quite common in our daily life, why a man will choose to be destroyed instead of to be defeated? However in that condition, it is easy to understand the reason.Because Santiago is regarded as a failure, because he is suffering the worst misfortune, because he is not trusted be others, he needs a challenge to prove himself. As a result, he decides to put the life to wrestle in such an extreme situation. This is miserable story, it describes a miserable hero. After reading the novel, I am confused that why the author did not let Santiago win in the end.The story of the old man symbolizes the in destructible spirit of human beings. At the end of the story, the old man said,” They beat me, Manolin. They truly beat me.” I can get the feeling that he had, how disappointed, how desperate, and how sad.In the reality, Santiago is a failure, but he succeeds in the spirit. His insistent struggle shows the dignity of human beings. In a way, victory is not important in the novel. What makes me admire is that Santiago dares to break down all the barriers over and over again. What he brings to all of us is a great confidence, a strong spirit.I have learned a lot from the book, especially the attitude towards failure and succe.Wearenotlimitedbytheplaceofourbirth, thecolor ofourskin, thecreedofourculture, theflagofourcountryor the circumstancesofour past.Weare onlylimited by the magnitudeofourvision, theextentofourfaithandthevastne ofourwillingnetotakeaction. If no one believes in you, then believe in yourself and as long as you live. When no one else will give you the encouragement that you so long for, then take hold of the podium of your own heart and encourage yourself.Failure is not horrible; the most horrible thing is giving in to the failure. What is the hero? In my opinion, the real hero will face the trouble bravely, will challenge it, will beat it, and will be a better man.The author also suffered a lot in his life, war, physical illne and mental illne.Although he committed suicide, he did deal with the trouble fearlely. Our life is just like the venture of the old man, we will meet a great number of difficulties. However, what we should do is put a bold front on them. Please remember we will be stronger if we fight against them, even though we fail in the end.In a word, this book will put you in touch with the hidden seeds of your succe and mobilize you to take action. It awakens your collective consciousne and faces you with your own greatne, with your higher miion.

Love actually

Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece written by a British writer named Jane Austen. In the book, she expreed the relationship between love and marriage in a humorous way and showed different attitudes toward marriage by depicting several young women of different descent, economic position and horizon of knowledge.

The story talks about four marriages which occurred in Britain in the 19th century. And the most important among them are protagonists Elizabeth and Darcy.Elizabeth is pretty and smart. As for love and marriage, she has her own strong principle that she won\'t be confused by money and status but to insist on looking for true love. While Darcy is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Therefore, she has a prejudice against him.Pride and prejudice lead to the unpleasent and misunderstanding between them. However, after clarification of various matters , they gradually fall in love and conclude the happy marriage.

In the book, Jane clearly explained that it is wrong to get married for the property, money and status. She emphasized the

important of the ideal marriage and regarded men and women\'s emotions as the foundation stone.

As far as I am concerned, I have learned two things from the book,o n the one hand, pride and prejudice are very common weakne among us, therefore, everyone can easily driven by their own subjective feelings and misunderstanding of others.Only in-depth understanding can we know a person\'s inner world. On the other hand, Elizabeth insists on her emotions and isn\'t confused by money and status, pursues her love bravely.Although we have different pursuits, I hope I can carry on like her. After all, uphold the dream is a happy thing.

The book review of Pride and Prejudice

管宁

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813.The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with iues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England.

After reading this book, I find that its name, Pride and Prejudice, is quite meaningful. Both the pride and prejudice are caused by money and social hierarchy.Jane reflected the reality of society by drawing the characters of specific person as well as the tongue they used when they speak. Some people think that only Mr.Darcy was proud and only Elizabeth had prejudice towards other else. But I hold the different opinion.

When a wealthy young bachelor, Bingley, moving into Netherfield Park in the neighborhood of the Bennet family, he is soon well-received because of his income of 5000 a year and poibility of marrying one of the young girls in the town. It’s quite easy to see the whole society was chasing down money and fame. That is a good background that the writer succefully set, making the following things sound reasonable.

The Bennets\' cousin Mr Collins, a clergyman, was proud of his rich patrone, the noble Lady Catherine de Bourgh. After being refused by Elizabeth of the offer of marriage, Mr Collins soon recovered and promptly became engaged to Elizabeth\'s close friend who pointed out that Mr Collins is a good, respectful, well-employed man which is absolutely untrue. How eager was she to have financial security by marrying a, what to say, kind of rich and powerful husband. We wonder whether the society had real love.

When Elizabeth went to visit her married girlfriend Charlotte and Mr Collins, she was to meet Mr.Darcy more frequently.Mr Darcy finds himself, again, attracted to Elizabeth and proposes to her. While talking to each other, Elizabeth charged him with pride, with destroying her sister\'s happine, with his disgraceful treatment of Mr Wickham, and with having conducted himself in an ungentlemanly manner. All the reasons of her prejudice towards Darcy were shown in no other. However, after reading the letter sent to clear himself by Mr.Darcy, Elizabeth came to acknowledge the truth of Mr Darcy\'s aertions.Later, Elizabeth realized what a kind, amiable and considerate person Mr.Darcy was little by little.

While facing the unreasonable order from Lady Catherine de Bourgh of never marrying her nephew, Elizabeth refused to low her head, believing that everyone had right to chase their own happine. However, lady Catherine believed her to be too low born for her nephew, Mr Darcy, upon hearing this, realized that Elizabeth\'s opinion of him may have changed and again proposes. We are never too surprised to find that the elegant noble lady Catherine who represented the highest cla of Britain was so arrogant under such a mammonish society.

But the combination of Darcy and Elizabeth proved that after so many generations living in such a material society and being told forever marrying to money and fame, the true love from the heart

and soul has not perished from the earth.

The fate of the tragedy

“Hamlet” is a claical representative work of Shakespeare. It was admired for centuries.Until now, still shocking the hearts of the people. But not only is all this not the role of plot and excellent literary skills, but also the problem that it reflected. To a large level, it describes an extremely primitive tragedy, human tragedy. The play\'s characters have different status and distinctive character, but they all suffered from the ravages of the same thing, which is at the mercy of their own desires. And it is called the fate of the cage.

Hamlet is the central figure of the tragedy, although was the prince, but he accepted the influence of new ideas from childhood, forming a new ideal of life and social ideals. His life is full of good hope. But his humanistic ideals were attacked by the relentle reality. His father was killed, and his mother married with the murder. When Hamlet was whelmed in the bereavement of losing his father, he once

questioned: “Survival or destruction, this is a problem deserving of consideration”.Whether to rise vigorously or go downhill? Because of sorrow and oppreion, the flame of hatred finally simmered in the heart of Hamlet and he chose revenge.

It can be said that Hamlet had a more profound understanding to life. The past he only turned a blind eye to it all.Now the harsh reality forced him to face all this.He had a premonition that he had been dragged into the inevitable fate of a tragedy. He must to kill his uncle, then became one for revenge who can not shirk his life\'s miion. And his enemy is today\'s king, to kill him, certainly not an easy task, but no matter how difficult, He must do.Plot and the killing are contrary to the nature of Hamlet kind of innocence, but his miion of revenge neceary.Bearing a heavy revenge miion, he was filled with hatred, darkne, and he was unable to extricate himself into the aby of suffering. As if Shakespeare used such words as the way revealing the terrible hatred, which is a double-edged sword, a sharp, double-edged sword also painted the poison. The person using it as if he sold the soul to the devil, and then stab someone in the irrational, but also inevitably makes their own black and blue.Shakespeare used this text reminding people that the sword is cold and bloodcurdling.Hatred double-edged sword, it is much more sensible to give up it than to pick up it.

This may be the eternal charm of Hamlet.

老人与海(The Old Man and the Sea)英文书评(book reviews)

然而这时却遇上了鲨鱼(a shark),老人与鲨鱼进行了殊死搏斗(put up a good fight),结果大马林鱼被鲨鱼吃光了,老人最后拖回只剩下一副光秃秃bald的鱼骨架(a fish skeleton)和一身(all over the body)的伤。

一种注意写实(writing or painting realistically),有着动人的情节(plot);另一种则侧重(to lay special emphasis on)道德说教,充满象征(badge)的意义。

This book tells us a story about a Cuban old man.He went fishing at sea on his own. After more than eighty four days , he fished an extremely large fish. The old man hadn’t ever seen such a big fish that was two meters longer than his boat. The vigor of fish was sostrong that it dragged the boat drifting for two days.During the two days, the old man experienced the difficulties that he had never met with. Finally,he stabbed it and tied the fish on the bow. However,he came acro a shark. Then, the old man put up a good fight with a shark. As a result, the fish was eaten by the shark. So,the old man carried a bald fish skeleton and being hurt all over the body to reach home. But in the end, he attained admiration by people.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway\'s most immortal

works. The book may very well become one of the true claics of this generation.Certainly, Ernest Hemingway\'s short novel is proceed exact , well united time and places and it’s style of writing is very deep.In addition, as the most great works, his novel contains not only one meaning.First of all, this is an exciting tragedy adventure story.Because I see a picture how an old man killed the large fish and fought a shark via his wisdom.Furthermore, it’s also a fable that describes a spirit strength ------ how a person achieved succe from a bad envirnoment.Lastly, the story implied a religious metaphor as well. The author added some Christian symbols and figure of speech inconspicuously.

So, in my opinion, this novel tells not only a moving plot, but also lays special emphasis on moral meanings that are full of the symbol of badge. The spirit that the old man poeed impreed me deeply.meaning

Sir Walter Scott 评论

READ again, and for the third time at least, Mi Austen\'s very finely written novel of \"Pride and Prejudice.\" That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. The big bow-wow strain I can do myself like any now going; but the exquisite touch, which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting, from the truth of the description and the sentiment, is denied to me.—From \"The Journal of Sir Walter Scott,\" March, 1826.

We bestow no mean compliment upon the author of \"Emma\" when we say that keeping close to common incidents, and to such characters as occupy the ordinary walks of life, she has produced sketches of such spirit and originality that we never mi the excitation which depends upon a narrative of uncommon events, arising from the consideration of minds, manners, and sentiments, greatly above our own.In this cla she stands almost alone; for the scenes of Mi Edgeworth are laid in higher life, varied by more romantic incident, and by her remarkable power of embodying and illustrating national character. But the author of \"Emma\" confines herself chiefly to the middling claes of society; her most distinguished characters do not rise greatly above well-bred country gentlemen and ladies; and those which are sketched with most originality and precision, belong to a cla rather below that standard. The narrative of all her novels is composed of such common occurrences as may have fallen under the observation of most folks; and her dramatis personæ conduct themselves upon the motives and principles which the readers may recognize as ruling their own, and that of most of their own acquaintances.—From \"The Quarterly Review,\" October, 1815.

Lord Macaulay 评论

SHAKESPEARE has had neither equal nor second. But among the writers who, in the point which we have noticed, have approached nearest to the manner of the great master we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen, a woman of whom England is justly proud. She has given us a multitude of characters, all, in a certain sense, commonplace, all such as we meet every day.Yet they are all as perfectly discriminated from each other as if they were the most eccentric of human beings. There are, for example, four clergymen, none of whom we should be surprised to find in any parsonage in the kingdom—Mr.Edward Ferrars, Mr.Henry Tilney, Mr.Edmund Bertram, and Mr.Elton.They are all specimens of the upper part of the middle cla. They have all been liberally educated. They all lie under the restraints of the same sacred profeion. They are all young. They are all in love. Not one of them has any hobby-horse, to use the phrase of Sterne. Not one has a ruling paion, such as we read of in Pope.Who would not have expected them to be insipid likenees of each other? No such thing.Harpagon is not more unlike to Jourdain, Joseph Surface is not more unlike to Sir Lucius O\'Trigger, than every one of Mi Austen\'s young divines to all his reverend brethren. And almost all this is done by touches so delicate that they elude analysis, that they defy the powers of description, and that we know them to exist only by the general effect to which they have contributed.—From eay on \"Madame D\'Arblay,\" 1843.

My point of view towards the masterpiece of Jane Austen’s is that this novel reflects the English human sentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative, and tells us the difference ways and attitudes to marriage of Mr.and Mrs.Bennet’s five daughters’.Thereby reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid Without considering all of these. There, the author emphasize the importance of ideal marriage, meanwhile, to be opposed to love & marriage based on money or property and to be opposed to people’s laugh love & marriage off.The author takes the affection/love as the cornerstone of ideal marriage between male and female.Elizabeth as the leading character in this novel, was born in the family of squireen’s, and is loved by Darcy.Darcy propose marriage to her in spite of difference in the poeion of property and social status, but is refused by Elizabeth for his pride , the novel demonstrate that if the pride of Darcy’s existed , there will be no love and also happy marriage between Elizabeth and he, it is really nice that Elizabeth witne the changes of Darcy’s through series of behavior in the following days.viewing that he is no longer pride and then eliminating her prejudice to him, finally engaged with him and leading a happy marriage. The author described that female is in pursuit of independent personality and equal right through several different attitudes of Elizabeth for Darcy’s propose marriage.Meanwhile, demonstrate Elizabeth’s independent understanding for a happy marriage. In this article, the writer described several unperfect marriages of Elizabeth’s sisters and close friends, aimed at making a sharp contrast with Elizabeth’s beatific marriage and revealed that marriage without love but base on social status and property actually is a kind of public tragedies.Humorous, ironical, polished language and real storyline is also occurred in this article.

When Pride Encounters Prejudice, Everything is Different

—the report of Pride and Prejudice

张文莹 Nancy 外汉一班 0091114047

Ⅰ:

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817), one of the most famous novelists in Britain, was born in Hampshire. She lived in the villages throughout her life.Although there were 2 suitors, she never married. She finished her first novel when she was only 21 years old. This work’s name was First Impreions (After amending, it had a new name: Pride and Prejudice).

Ⅱ:

Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and marriage.Mr.Bennet was an English gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his wife.He had five daughters: the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia.Because of the law, after the death of Mr.Bennet, their house would be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met. This family\'s future happine and security dependent on the 5 daughters’ marriages. One day, a rich gentleman Mr.Bingley came and rented a large house in this country. His sisters and his best friend Mr.Darcy came together.Love was soon in the air for one of the 5 sisters, while another had a prejudice against Mr.Darcy.

Then they experienced many things, but at last, Mr.Bingley married the oldest sister Jane, and Elizabeth overcame the prejudice and married to Mr.Darcy.It’s a happy ending.

Ⅲ:

Although Mr.Song said the book report should be objective, but I had to say this book touched my heart deeply.

The women written by Jane Austen still live in our world.

Some like Charlotte Lucas, they choose a marriage without love just for money and a stable life.

Some like Lydia, they are so frivolous and foolish that they flatter themselves that they can do anything well.

Some like Mary, they are not good-looking but think themselves are the best ones. They look down every man while they are eager for a man’s love in their hearts.

Some like Jane, they are kind and beautiful, but they are also reserved and feminine。They don’t have courage to fight for the love of their own but wait here in vain.

And there are also some girls like innocent Ms Darcy or like vainglorious and superficially clever Bingley sisters.

Of course, some girls like Elizabeth, they are clever, gentle, open-minded, and they know their own hearts. They never give in even facing a difficult situation.1

They are good ladies who are worth loving and cherishing.

Jane Austen’s wisdom always appeals to me, which makes me smile through the whole reading.

In fact, the life of Jane Austen was unremarkable, she nearly didn’t leave the villages where she lived. Therefore, in her books, you can’t find any historical plots or any abstruse things making you feel bored. She just wrote some common people about their happine, little trouble, sorrow and perplexity again and again by her keen observation and her outstanding ability of writing.Although those stories happened in the villages of Britain 200 years ago, they are vivid today.Maybe she was not really a great writer in the world, but she is the cleverest and cutest woman in my heart. However, reality is not the novel. It is always cruel.Jane Austen never married throughout her life, her best friend was her sister. She was such a clever and naughty girl, whose gentlene and beauty were ignored. It’s a pity that there was no one like Mr.Darcy to appreciate and love her.

Jane Austen and Eileen Chang were very like.Their works had many things in common. For example, both of their works focused on the life which they were familiar with, and they both had the sharp observation.Although they liked to write some satires, Austen was gentler than Eileen Chang.

In Pride and Prejudice, you can find some very interesting dialogues.Such as in the CHAPTER 1, Mrs.Bonnet said: “Mr.Bennet, how can you abuse your own children in such a way? You take delight in vexing me.You have no compaion on my poor nerves.” “You mistake me, my dear.I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends.I have heard you mention them with consideration these 20 years at least.” the Mr.Bennet answered with a forced smile.

What sarcastic humor it contained! She succefully depicted Mrs.Bennet as a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper by few words. And the two of them left a deep and clear imprison on the readers.

Love is the eternal theme of novels.Pride and Prejudice was no exception, but it not only talked about “love”, also mentioned “marriage”.The novels about love or marriage are countle in the world. So standing out among them is not an easy thing.Pride and Prejudice can be one of the masterpieces and be loved by thousands upon thousands people from different countries, which proves that it does have its special glamour.

I mainly want to talk about Elizabeth’s 2 rejections. As readers or outsiders,we can easily reject anyone and don’t accept a marriage without love just for respecting our own hearts. But if you think it over and read the book again, you will find it needs great courage to reject a man who can support you a life without worrying about clothes and food.Rejecting her cousin Mr.Collins, an unpleasant person, seemed easy, however, her best friend Charlotte chose to marry him. This contrast shows very clearly that this rejection is difficult for a woman in those days.

Maybe you can find some reasons to explain why Elizabeth did that to Mr.Collins, but I’m sure there is no reason to refuse Mr.Darcy’s marriage proposal. He was such a perfect gentleman! Elizabeth couldn’t inherit her father’s fortune, which meant she had to marry a rich man to support her and live a comfortable life. But faced with Mr.Darcy, she said “no” without any hesitation. When Darcy proposed to her by saying his sense of her inferiority-of its being a degradation-of the family obstacles which judgment had always opposed to inclination.Elizabeth said: “It is nature that obligation should be felt, and if I could feel gratitude, I would now thank you.But I cannot —I have never desired your good opinion, and you have certainly bestowed it most unwillingly.”

I like this self-respecting girl and look down upon those girls who give in just for fortune, fame, even some petty profits

In fact, I don’t like a happy ending.I think a tragedy is more attractive and can reach the deepest part of my heart while a comedy is read just for relaxation. But I am also moved by this story.Pride gave way to sincerity, prejudice was replaced by love. They lived a happy life together.

We can image that they sat on the lakeside bench at twilight and talked about that green years when the pride met the prejudice。

Wuthering Heights

Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights told a complicated love story among Catherine ,Heathcliff and Edgar. And of course they three were suffered from this a lot until their death. After reading this novel, I was shocked badly by the emotions of these characters through which our writer expreed a plenty of thoughts. Now I want to pick out two points of them to give voice to my own opinion.Firstly, why the Gypsies like Heathcliff were looked down upon by the other people.Secondly I would like to talk the selfishne of the love between Catherine and Heathcliff. When it comes to Gypsies, it will make us think of freedom, paion and magic ,in other words , it seems that the Gypsies poe the ability of reading the other people\'s minds. However, it is also the nation always coursed and insulted by the others. The reason for that was the Gypsies have been keeping migrating form their appearance.Even nowadays nobody can explain why they must do such things, which also made them surrounded by a mysterious air.Though the Gypsies is an independent nation, they have no motherland and many basic human rights.Just like Heathcliff in this novel who always been laughed at by the so called \"superior \" people despite of his brightne and gentle looking.I maintained that the sense of shame was a most cause of his contortion and vengeance.Because of this self-abasement, Heathcliff did not dare to win the love of Catherine .Now let\'s shift our attention to the selfishne of the love between Heathcliff and Catherine .As a noble Mi ,Catherine thought she and Heathcliff were not well-matched for he was a poor and inferior farm boy thought they loved each other from childhood. One of the unbelievable reason gave by Catherine for her marriage with Edgar was she wanted to help Heathcliff by using her husband\'s money. And the other one was she could be the most important lady miles around by marrying Edgar. It was very clear that this kind of selfishne was the radical reason for their tragic endings. So was Heathcliff. He owed his failed marriage to Edgar and the others who ever turned up their noises at him.He cheated Isabella, sister of Edgar, and forced his son to marry Cathy ,daughter of Catherine and Edgar, in order to get Edgar\'s inheritance.I thought he never loved anyone except himself and Catherine .Maybe death was really a liberation for him to get himself out from the guilt and sorrows hidden in bottom of his heart.Luckily, after his death, Hareton and Cathy fell in love with each other and would live a happy life. Love is about giving not getting and Selfishne is what will ruin it.There was no doubt that Wuthering Heights was a thorough tragedy if we read it from this point.

The main content of this book is that the old fisherman Santiago doesn’t catch any fish for 84 days.At first, a boy named Manolin follows him .However after forty days without catching a fish, the child is arranged by their parents to another boat up because they think the old man is unlucky. Thus on the eighty-fifth day, He unexpectedly caught a marlin even bigger than the boat.Santiago makes the fish pulling his skiff. Two days and two nights pa in this manner, during which the old man bears the tension of the line with his body.On the third day, the fish begins to circle the skiff. Thus Santiago begins the fight between the sharks and himself. Finally reaching the shore before dawn on the next day, Santiago struggles on the way to his shack, carrying the heavy mast on his shoulder.Once home, he goes to his bed and falls into a deep sleep.A group of fishermen gather the next day around the boat where the fish\'s skeleton is still attached.Tourists at the nearby café mistakenly take it for a shark.Manolin, worried during the old man\'s endeavor, cries upon finding him safe asleep. The boy brings him newspapers and coffee. When the old man wakes, they promise to fish together once again.Upon his return to sleep, Santiago dreams of his youth—of lions on an African beach.

The words that inspired me most in this article maybe is the “Man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeat.” This is Santiago’s living faith, and

also the idea that the author wanted to expre in The Old Man and the Sea.The old man never gets one fish during 84 days, but he never thinks about giving up.He just still struggles for the brief he used to hold.Yes, at last, he failed, but we can’t deny he is a powerhouse in the spirit. And in our real lives, there are all kinds of difficulties that we need to deal with. Some people choose escape, because they think they can’t overcome them. They scared. But for me, I like it.I think the problems are good for me.Every time I surmount it, I enjoy that kind of achievability.I enjoy the proce I solving the problems, and this can be the precious experience in my lives. But sometimes the problems may be harder than our imaginations; we try all kinds of ways to solve them but still failed, so, at this time, we need to learn the old man’s spirit.I think the live is not complete without fail and pain. It’s impoible that everything goes smoothly in our lives. We can grow up only if we experience the pain and harm.Just like choice. We face all kinds of choices every day, and sometimes we don\'t know how to choose or what we need to choose. In fact, we can’t choose, that’s because we have already had something we really want in our heart, so we don’t need to choose.

Santiago teach me what is courage, and teach me insist and never say never.Actually, that reminds me of a short video I watched in the high school.It\'s a inspirational video.I still remember the first time I watched it, I cried. This video is about a game named “death crawl”.A group is practicing so that they have enough energy in the football game. Now, at this time I don’t want to talk about too much about this video, I just want to say something about faith, insistence and potential. In our lives, sometimes we didn’t do something well, we may say, well, I’ve already tried my best.We may think it’s OK, that is enough. The standard we give to ourselves is too low, but the interesting thing is, we always ask other people to be excellent, and the standard we give to other is so high. When we don’t do it well, we say we’ve already tried our best, but we never strain every never. The reason why we haven’t been succeful is we don’t have aims, don’t have a real dream, we are not confident, don’t have a great coach, and don’t know how much the potential we have.We all read this book, The Old Man and the Sea, but why we didn\'t learn the spirit in it? Compared to Santiago, the condition we have is so great nowadays, but we become

more and more frail, especially our teenagers. Most of them always say they don’t believe something at all, and write those inactive or negative words in their blog, I just wonder why they become so negative. This is the most beautiful time in a whole life, we need to treasure it, love it.An old man can struggle for 2 days and 2 nights, but look at us, as the teenagers, why we can’t?“Lost generation”? I think we just don’t know how much, how better we can do.Potential.Everyone’s potential is infinite. We didn’t do well, that’s because we told ourselves we can’t do it in advance.Just because we don\'t believe ourselves, so we can’t do anything.

In my opinion, when we face the problems, maybe the best way we can do is just pretend to be someone else.I think for Santiago, maybe at that time, he pretended himself as a strong man, maybe Schwarzenegger. And then, he really made it.He thought he was Schwarzenegger, so he got a lot of power and energy, so he can catch the fish, and fight with so many sharks, and finally, went back to home.During the trip, that is the faith supports him to go all the way to the coast.

Our life is not plain sailing and it is constituted by the difficulties and problems. The solution to the problem is not only the witne of our growth but also make us more mature. In order to make our life much more meaningful, let us face the challenges of life bravely.

Pride and Prejudice

Ⅰ.Reading experience:

I watch the movie Pride and Prejudice during last winter vocation, and I found it very attractive. In May of 2011,I decided to read the book .Though I am familiar with the plot of this book, I found it sometimes also confusing. It Maybe because of the new words.By reading this book, I broaden my horizon to some extent.

Ⅱ.Brief introduction:

Ⅲ.Author introduction:

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817), one of the most famous novelists in Britain, was born in Hampshire. She lived in the villages throughout her life.Although there were 2 suitors, she never married. She finished her first novel when she was only 21 years old. This work’s name was First Impreions (After amending, it had a new name: Pride and Prejudice).

Ⅳ.Thoughts

My point of view towards the masterpiece of Jane Austen’s is that this novel reflects the English human sentiment of the end of 18thcentury and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative, and tells us the difference ways and attitudes to marriage of Mr.and Mrs.Bennet’s five daughters’.Thereby reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid Without considering all of these. There, the author emphasize the importance of ideal marriage, meanwhile, to be opposed to love & marriage based on money or property and to be opposed to people’s laugh love & marriage off.The author takes the affection/love as the cornerstone of ideal marriagebetween male and female.Elizabeth as the leading character in this novel, was born in the family of squireen’s, and is loved by Darcy.Darcy propose marriage to her in spite of difference in the poeion of property and social status, but is refused by Elizabeth for his pride , the novel demonstrate that if the pride of Darcy’s existed , there will be no love and also happy marriage between Elizabeth and he, it is really nice that Elizabeth witne the changes of Darcy’s

through series of behavior in the following days.viewing that he is no longer pride and then eliminating her prejudice to him, finally engaged with him and leading a happy marriage. The author described that female is in pursuit ofindependent personality and equal right through several different attitudes of Elizabeth for Darcy’s propose marriage.Meanwhile, demonstrate Elizabeth’s independent understanding for a happy marriage. In this article, the writer described several unperfect marriages of Elizabeth’s sisters and close friends, aimed at making a sharp contrast with Elizabeth’sbeatific marriage and revealed that marriage without love but base on social status and property actually is a kind of public tragedies.Humorous, ironical, polished language and real storyline is also occurred in this article.

BACK TO INNOCENCE

The Little Prince is a story about love and life.It published in 1943 and written by a French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.The extraordinarily imaginative words capture innumerable grown-up’s and children’s hearts as well as the author\'s wishes that is back to innocence. As the book said ,\"the water on the heart is beneficial\", and little prince can make people feel warm and fresh.

It tells a story both beautiful and sad : a little prince who lives in a small planet alone has a proud rose who thinks itself is the only flower of that kind. After a quarrel with the rose the little prince decides to travel, trying to find a way to relief loneline and sorrow.During his journey, he visited several planets, and had conversations with their inhabitants, including a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a busineman, a lamplighter and a geographer, from whom he found, in bewilderment, how unreasonable and meaningle the world of grown-ups is.

The grown-ups have lost their sensibility to nature and life, which makes them unable to see their own ugly features clearly. They began to ignore some tiny happine, began to lose some sensitive feelings, and began to lose ourselves. Therefore, losing all hopes of the shame, dull and pretended adults’world ,the little prince left us to look for his

flower to find his own life where there is love, responsibility and imagination.Leaving this eternal claic to tell us : Go back to innocence, and just look at the world in children’s eyes.

Go back to innocence, learn to use our hearts to observing everything, not only by the eyes; Go back to innocence,in the attitude of grateful for the whole world; Go back to innocence , learn to use happine to beat sorrow——in children’s world , there is no impae, sun will still rising when you open the eyes.

LaDameauxCamelias

The author of this book, Alexandre Dumas fils was the illegitimate son of Dumas pere, who is a giant of the literary world. He himself was also a famous novelist and dramatist in the 19th century.

When I first knew this situation, I was surprised that the father and the son could both make so many contributions in the same circles. This reminded me of the “Three Su” in Song Dynasty, three poets whose names were SuXun, SuShi and SuZhe.Their relationships are similar to Dumas because they all have great achievements in history of literature.

The heroine in the novel is Mademoiselle Marguerite Gautier, who is one of the most celebrated courtesans in social circles in Pairs.Even if she lives in the luxurious house and spends money like water, she put up with the

trauma of mental and physical at the same time.Eventually she suffered from a serious illne.Owing to the lack of love and solicitude, she felt spiritually barren and lonely.I think this foreshadowed her tragedy in life.At first, I didn’t pay attention to her attitude towards life, but as I got further into the novel, I realized that she felt used, abused and unloved in the upper cla until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and told her that he loved her wholehearted and not for what she could do for him.It needs great courage for her to abandon the life she had enjoyed for so long.Eventually, she sold out her jewelry to pay for the cost of living, and then lived happily and calmly with Armand in the countryside.I think it showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change everything and persist herself in the world full of money. In my heart, she is really a beautiful girl who has pure soul like white camellia.

However, happine didn’t last for long. When M.Duval, Armand\'s father, came to her and pleaded for her to leave Armand to save both Armand\'s reputation and his younger innocent sister, she felt that it was her duty because her status influenced Armand\'s family. In order for the benefits of Armand and his family, Marguerite determined to make sacrifices. It meant giving up her own happine and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that someday Armand would forgive her.Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illne.Ultimately, she couldn’t see her lover for the last time. Before she was dying, all the creditors came to her house with IOU and forced her to pay the debts. They have no mercy on the poor girl, only want to get benefits from her even when she was dying.I tasted people’s greed and unfeelingne.

Some other characters that connected with Marguerite had their own purpose.I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, the only person who is concerned about her is Armand.Others only wanted something from her.For example, the Comte de G.and Comte de N.simply care about her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he would have helped her change her lifestyle. And lastly, Prudence was a bloodsucker who used Marguerite till the last time.I also think she was jealous of Marguerite that she had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

I think the sources of the Camellia’s tragic fate are her kind-hearted character, her persistence with love and courage to life. Her tragedy also reveals the corruption and darkne in society.

Camille is just like the camellia, she could never escape from the tragic destiny. But it wasn’t her fault; it’s because of the evil of capitalism and the darkne of that society. She is small and weak when faced with the whole society, and is difficult to shake off fetters of conventional views. But her seek for love, desire to freedom and strong belief in life encouraged me a lot.Camellia is the claical image in the literature circles of the world. She has filthy profeion and beautiful soul, lowly status and firm character. Her final result gave me endle regret and sentimentalism

Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers, their delicate beauty makes people feel they are scenery of life. However, even the God envies their beauty. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. As we are normal persons, even we can see the darkne of humanity that results in their fate of withering, we can at most ask quietly in our hearts: Where have those

beautiful flowers gone? Where have they gone?

Jane Eyre — A Beautiful Soul

Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:

We remember her goodne: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinarine, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.

We remember her pursuit of justice. It’s like a companion with the goodne. But still, a virtuous person should promote the goodne on one side and must check the badne on the other side.

We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the God’s feet.Though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.

We also remember her striving for life, her toughne and her confidence…

When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.

Actually, she wasn’t pretty, and of course, the ordinary appearance didn’t make others feel good of her, even her own aunt felt disgusted with it.And some others even thought that she was easy to look down on and to tease, so when Mi Ingram met Jane Eyre, she seemed quite contemptuous, for that she was obviously much

more prettier than ‘the plain and ugly governe’.But as the little governe had said: ‘Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulle and heartle? You think wrong!’ This is the idea of equality in Jane Eyre’s mind.God hadn’t given her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. Her idea of equality and self-respect impre us so much and let us feel the power inside her body.

In my mind, though a person’s beauty on the face can make others once feel that one is attractive and charming, if his or her mind isn’t the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last for, when others find that the beauty which had charmed them was only a falsity, it’s not true, they will like the person no more. For a long time, only a person’s great virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as AN EVERLASTING BEAUTY, just as Kahill Gibran has said, that ‘Beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted’.I can feel that how beauty really is, as we are all fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of noblene or humblene, but fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of noblene or humblene, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.

Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty.

经典语段:

You think because I\'m poor, I\'m plain, I have no feelings? I promise you, if god is gifted me with wealth and beauty, I should make it does as hard for you to leave me just as for me to leave you now, but he didn not.If my spirit can addre yours, as we both pa the grave stood before himequal.

读后感受:

In the story, her life can be devided into five parts.

一. At Gateshead(before ten years old)

二. At Lowood School (8 years` school life,6 years to study ,2

years to teach)

三. At Thornfield(about one year, the most important time in

her life)

四. At Moor House(half a year)

五. At Ferndean Manor(maybe the rest of her life)

This novel shapes three deep figures.

One is the Marquis St.Evrémonde\'s brother, as a representative of the feudal aristocracy, the only unshakable philosophy for them is oppreing people, and they are the object for the author to put pain and lash.

Another is the revolutionary maes like Mr.and Mrs.Defarge.It must be pointed out that their image is distorted. For example Mrs.Defarge, she was born in a farm family who was insulted and persecuted by the feudal aristocracy, with depth regret. The author deeply sympathizes with her misery, and before and after revolution broke outhe very admire her strong character, best talents and special organization and leadership skills. But when the revolution further, it shows her cold, fierce and narrow.Especially when she went to the doctor\'s to search Lucie and her little baby, she is a bloodthirsty lunatic. Finally, she died in her own gun.

The third type is idealized person: they are in the author\'s mind use humanitarian resolving social contradictions, use love overcome hate.Including Dr Manette and his daughter, Charles Draney, Sydney Carton, etc.Love can advance everything.Like Dr Manette\'s family was destroyed by the Marquis St.Evrémonde, but for the love of his daughter, he abandon the feudal hate; Darney is marquis\'s nephew, but he relies the guilty his family did, then he give up what he would get and determine use his own action to atonement. Those person one is victim of noble\'s tyranny, tolerate everything; another is the heir to the marquis. That is the love, almost their daughter and wife, Lucie, let them forget the sin. They make a happy life! It is an opposite way to solve the social problem by violence. The style of the novel is solemn, depreed, full of worried and indignant.

As is common in English literature, good and evil are symbolized with light and darkne.Lucie Manette is the light and Madame Defarge is darkne.Darkne represents uncertainty, fear and peril. It is dark when Mr.Lorry rides to Dover; it is dark in the prisons; dark shadows follow Madame Defarge; dark, gloomy doldrums disturb Dr.Manette; his capture and captivity are shrouded in darkne; the Marquis’s estate is burned in the dark of night; Jerry Cruncher raids graves in the darkne; Charles\'s second arrest also occurs at night. Both Lucie and Mr.Lorry feel the dark threat it is Mrs.Defarge.\"That dreadful woman seems to throw a shadow on me,\" remarks Lucie.Although Mr.Lorry tries to comfort her, \"the shadow of the manner of Mrs.Defarges was dark upon herself\".Mrs.Defarge is \"like a shadow over the white road\", the snow symbolizing purity and Madame Defarge\'s darkne corruption.Dickens also compares the dark color of blood to the pure white snow: the blood takes on the shade of the crimes of its shedders

A tragedy of the history 历史悲剧

Crazily, but truthfully, I finished reading the most part of the novel \"A Tale of Two Cities\" in just one day.Lost in the story, I felt like being together with the characters and experiencing the same exciting events.Soon it came to an end.To tell you my feelings, it’s infinite sadne and a strong emotion that can drive me to cry.

The story is set in London and Paris at the time of the great French Revolution. It shows the causes of revolution and its effects on people\'s day-to-day lives. Before the

revolution, the King and the aristocracy treated their people cruelly in France. The common people were extremely poor and miserable. The crops in the fields were poor as if even the land shared the misery of the people. And there were so heavy taxes that all the villagers had nothing to hand over at last.On the other hand, the aristocracy made their will as the law by using money and gold. There were no justice, no equality and no fairne.Just as what happened to Dr Manette, he wrote to the Minister to show the crime what Marquis St.Evrémonde had done, resulting in himself being arrested and sent to the prison Bastille without any reason.

Then this situation of darkne was needed to be changed. As people such as the Defarges prepared and arranged, at length the Revolution came to break out. When the Bastille was captured and the King was tried and put to death as well as many other aristocrats, things didn\'t go on as what they had been expected. The situation stayed the same or even worse. The prisoners from the Bastille were set free while more prisons were filled with people who had done no wrong again.People who once lived on the bottom of cla took the charge now and their heart had been full of evil. The only thing they wanted to do was to revenge. And these so-called \"patriots\" would like to see more and more innocent prisoners going to the guillotine and that\'s their joy.As the novel wrote, “In everything they did were mercile, for they had been hardened in the fires of suffering and the touch of pity could make no mark on them\".

Equality and fairne is what people seek, which led to the French Revolution. As a consequence, neither equality nor fairne was got after the revolution. And that\'s the tragedy of the history.I was heavyhearted when reading what Sydney Carton said before death and I burst into tears finally.

A Tale of Two Cities is a novel by Charles Dickens. The key events take place just before and during the French Revolution. The novel is set mostly in London and revolutionary Paris.

In my opinion, it is a tale about love, tolerance and revenge.

First of all, let\'s turn to love.It is the love of Sydney Carton that makes this book so impreive. When Sydney Carton hears that Lucie Manette will get married to Charles Darnay, instead of being angry, he promises Lucie that he would give his life to keep someone she loves alive because he loves her so much. This kind of love is beyond love itself. In the end, he keeps his promise. He exchanges places with Charles Darnay and is sent to the Guillotine. His sacrifice for love makes the story reach the climax.Besides, it is etched in the mind of all the readers forever. We can forget every character in this story except him.

Then it comes to tolerance. The old man, Dr.Alexander Manette, father of Lucie Manette who cannot escape the memory of being held in the Bastille. However, He deserves our respect and admire.Though he suffers a lot of pain which is from the Evremonde Brothers ---- Charles Darnay\'s father and uncle, he doesn\'t change his qualities. He is kind and tolerant as before. He agrees on the marriage of Lucie and Charles and at last try his best to save Charles.Compared to the revenge of Madame Therese Defarge, the tolerance of Dr.Alexander Manette is precious and meaningful.

Revenge comes at last.Madame Therese Defarge, a key revolutionist who seeks revenge all her life. She sits all day in the wine shop, silently knitting.Names of the enemies are carefully knitted into her work. She is very stubborn and unforgiving in her revenge on the Evremonde family. It is nothing to her that an innocent man was going to the Guillotine because of his father\'s and his uncle\'s crimes. She says:\" all the Evremonde people must go to the guillotine. The wife and the child must follow the husband.\" How terrible and mad she is!

Dickens has a gift for telling about the aspects of contemporary society. It is common sense to regard a revolution as a progreive social movement which causes great changes in culture, economy, and politics. However Dickens maintains a special perspective on the French Revolution. The acts of violence done by the revolutionists are among the most memorable scenes in the novel.Castles are burned, laws are changed and the rich powerful nobles are sent to the Guillotine. The Guillotine cut off the heads of many, many people-the powerful and the cruel, but also the beautiful, the innocent and the good.

The young woman who are sent to the Guillotine with Sydney gives me a great impreion. She says:\" I am innocent.I am not afraid to die, but I have done nothing. They say that the Revolution will do so much good for the poor people, how can my death help the poor? If it is true, I am willing to die, but I do not know how that can be.\" Yes, how can the death help the poor people? The revolutionists fight to win power, now they use it to kill more people, whether good or evil.Their violent actions makes the society more disordered.

Everything has two sides, the same goes for the revolution. It removes something bad, laggard and evil, and to some extent it removes something good, nice and fair inevitably.

A Book Review On Brave New World When reading the introductory paage about this book before starting it formally, the year of 1932 attracts my attention. As we all know, there was so much turmoil in Europe in the year of 1931,severe social problem ,such as depreing economy, high unemployment rate, the unrest of government, made the whole Europe a horrible place. In such a circumstance,it was spontaneous for people to dream for a better world and just judging from the name it’s quite easy to consider the book as a picture of an ideal world. However,as it is Brave New World is substantially not a brave world, but a even more horrible world. In that world, material civilization is in high level and everything is automated. No one would ever worry about what to eat and wear;everyone is enjoying the most comfortable life.Seemed like a wonderful world, its true appearance can be thrilling. In that world, Economic prosperity and personal enjoy will become the only philosophy idea ,in the meantime ,the only religion of the whole society. One of the biggest characteristics of that new world is unstable factors ranging from international warfare to personal illne that may influence the material production are all destroyed. For instance, soma,a kind of drug just like today’s narcotic drugs ,is used widely. Here are several sentences from the book about soma.\"Glum, Marx, glum. What you need is a gramme of soma.”\"All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects.\"\"One cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments.\"(from Chapter 3)It’s clear that people’s emotion is controlled by drugs;almost everything is controlled by drugs.Never regard it as a good thing. On the contrary,it’s terrifying,it means people lost their feelings and have no independent personality. To some extent,it just like turn human beings into machines.Another trait of the world is man is produced rather than be born.In a specific place named Human Incubation Center, following a specific procedure called Bokanovsky\'s Proce, humans are produced by eggs and sperm. As a result ,a man’s fate is actually determined before he is “born” by what conditions the operators provide. Confronted such a crazy world,in spite of many advantages it have, everyone’s choice is likely to be the same with the Savage (Here savages means people comes from places except the brave new world) in the book: “But I don\'t want comfort.I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodne.I want sin.”

“In fact,” said Mustapha Mond, “you\'re claiming the right to be unhappy.”

“All right then,”said the Savage defiantly,“I\'m claiming the nght to be unhappy.”

“Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphilis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen to-morrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.” There was along silence. “I claim them all,”said the Savage at last. However,to my disappointment, the savage finally killed himself in order to purify himself. Before he died,he said”I ate civilization. It poisoned me; I was defiled. And then I ate my own wickedne.”

You may consider nothing in the book makes real sense as the whole book is just the author’s fancy.Neverthele, yesterday’s imagination is likely to become the reality of tomorrow;that is to say Brave New World is a book foreseeing future. With its unique significance of enlightenment, the book is bound to be taken seriously especially today when modern civilization, both economy and technology,is developing in an amazing rate.In the proce of development,it’s never lose our human nature and instinct that should be bared in everyone’s mind.Only in this way can we human create a real brave new world.

Jane Eyre lived in an environment that her parents died. She lived with her uncle and aunt. She had lived for 10 years in abuse and discrimination. But Jane Eyre built her confidence and a spirit that could overcome everything. She was integrity, exalted and pure, for Rochester she was one can talk in the spirit equally. He slowly fell in love with her.His sincerity moved her, she accepted him.But the day when they got married, Jane Eyre was shocked to know that Rochester had a wife, she insisted to leave. In such a rich environment, she still insisted on her personal dignity, as this is the spirit charming of Jane.

The writer designed a very bright ending.Rochester manor ruined, he became a disabled, but in such a condition, Jane no longer wandered between dignity and love, she married Rochester with dignity.

The novel tells us that our life is the best of the dignity of people and love, the ending of the novel to the heroine is such a life.Though I think the final outcome is too perfect, but I still respect the author’s dream of the good life with love and dignity, after all, in today\'s society, will people\'s value realized in this way cannot do without the help of the money.People are crazy for money and position, they seems to submerged love.In the choice between poor and rich, in love and do not love, few people will do such as Jane abandon all for love and personality.

Jane Eyre have showed us a truth that turn complex to simple, is a kind of felling that pursuit for the whole heart, is a kind of simplified emotion regardle of the gain and lo, just like a cup of iced water, purify each reader’ soul, also cause the resonance of the readers, especially the female readers. The novel is worth reading.

第19篇:1984 英文书评l

View the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution from 1984 1984 is a political prophecy novel. It is written by George Orwell\'s in 1945.The purpose of the article is to criticize totalitarianism. When I read the book, what imprees me most is the superiority of the party .There are too much similar between the phenomenon that are mentioned in the \"1984\" and the period of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. It is invincible.“who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past .”However , it is the party who controls the present, that is to say, it controls everything anytime. It always make up lies and changes the history to maintain its own status.What\'s more, people lost their freedom. The cult of personality get to the unprecedented state of madne.Just by reading the life that Winston has experienced, I feel tortured. I can\'t imagine that human live in such a social that is spiritual desolation, lack of material, have high preure .What is the difference between this and death? It is hard for me to imagine that is so luxury to ensure the freedom of spirit and worship, food and clothing, and meet the kinship and friendship.\"1984\" overturned my cognition to society. It can be seen the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution brings much pain. The people who have no independent soul can\'t wake up from slavery to against them, in the social people can’t have independent personality and sound mind. There is no doubt that Wins-ton has some independent spirit, he tried to rebel the society, and escape from the monitoring of big brother, even if only in mind.I think Winston is not only one person, but also represent the people who live in the morbid society to endure pain.He wants to do all the things which are in violation of regulations, he want to keep all the things that the party want to erase, he even wants to risk his life to take part in the revolution against big brother, he feel excited for all reactionary things, and realize it enthusiastically.Even if Winston can’t succeed to revolt,

end up in a form of subversion of the self, the spirit of freedom that he dare to struggle to pursue let a person feel a trace of joy. After reading the \"1984\", I have benefited a lot from it .And it gives me a huge impact on my mind. This book is not only a prediction of social problem, but also a kind of warning. On this road we should avoid similar iues happening, do the real freedom and democracy, Only if we can road towards to the smoothly and democracy prosperous future.

第20篇:双城记英文书评材料

This novel shapes three deep figures. One is the Marquis St.Evrémonde\'s brother, as a representative of the feudal aristocracy, the only unshakable philosophy for them is oppreing people, and they are the object for the author to put pain and lash.

Another is the revolutionary maes like Mr.and Mrs.Defarge.It must be pointed out that their image is distorted. For example Mrs.Defarge, she was born in a farm family who was insulted and persecuted by the feudal aristocracy, with depth regret. The author deeply sympathizes with her misery, and before and after revolution broke out

he very admire her strong character, best talents and special organization and leadership skills. Both Lucie and Mr.Lorry feel the dark threat it is Mrs.Defarge.\"That dreadful woman seems to throw a shadow on me,\" remarks Lucie.Although Mr.Lorry tries to comfort her, \"the shadow of the manner of Mrs.Defarges was dark upon herself\".Mrs.Defarge is \"like a shadow over the white road\", the snow symbolizing purity and Madame Defarge\'s darkne corruption.Dickens also compares the dark color of blood to the pure white snow: the blood takes on the shade of the crimes of its shedders A tragedy of the history 历史悲剧

Before the revolution, the King and the aristocracy treated their people cruelly in France.
