The law and the fruits

In the desert, fruit was scarce.God called one of his prophets and said:- Each person may only eat one fruit a day.The custom was obeyed for many generations, and the ecology of the place was preserved.Since the remaining fruit supplied seeds, other trees appeared.Soon, the entire region was turned into fertile soil, which was the envy of other towns. But the people continued to eat one fruit a day – they remained faithful to what the ancient prophet of their forefathers had told them. However they never allowed the inhabitants of other villages to take advantage of the abundant harvest with which they were rewarded each year. The result was that fruit rotted on the ground.God called a new prophet and said:- Let them eat as much fruit as they like. And ask them to share the abundance with their neighbors. The prophet came to the town with the new meage. But he was stoned – for by now the custom was ingrained in the hearts and minds of each of the inhabitants. With time, the younger villagers began to question the barbaric old custom. But, since the tradition of the elders was unbending, they decided to abandon the religion. Thus, they could eat as much fruit as they wished, and give the rest to those in need of food. The only people who remained faithful to the local church, were those who considered themselves saints. But in truth they were unable to see how the world changes, and recognize how one must change with it.

This story appears in the chapter \" The Fifth Year of Duke Xi \" in Zuo zhuan, the famous commentary by Zuo Qiuming on The Spring and Autumn Annals. The set phrase \" if the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold \" is used to mean that two persons or things share a common lot and that is one fails ,the other is in danger.

He is a Harvard graduate playing in the National Basketball Aociation. He is an Asian-American in a league devoid of them, which makes him doubly anomalous. No team drafted Lin in 2010.Two teams cut him in December, before the Knicks picked him up.

His contract, potentially worth nearly $800,000, was not even guaranteed until Tuesday afternoon. So for the past six weeks, Lin, 23, has been sleeping in his brother Josh’s living room, waiting for clarity and career security.

On Saturday night, Lin came off the bench and powered the Knicks to a 99-92 victory over the Nets at Madison Square Garden, scoring a career-best 25 points with 7 aists. Two nights later, he made his first N.B.A.start and produced 28 points and 8 aists in a 99-88 win over the Utah Jazz.

Knicks fans now serenade Lin with chants of “Je-re-my!” and “M.V.P.!”.With every game, every precision pa and every clever drive to the basket, Lin is raising expectations, altering the Knicks’ fate and redefining the word “unlikely.” On Twitter, fans and basketball pundits are using another term to describe the phenomenon: “Linsanity.”

Two weeks ago, the 6-foot-3 Lin was not even part of the Knicks’ point-guard rotation, despite their lack of talent at the position. He played sparingly in a few games, showing just enough promise to keep getting another look— a few more minutes, another quarter. But there was never any hint of what was to come.

With 25 points Saturday, Lin set the N.B.A.scoring record for a player from Harvard. For an encore, he became the first player in more than 30 years to record at least 28 points and 8 aists in his first N.B.A.start.The last to do so was Isiah Thomas, the Detroit Pistons’ Hall of Fame point guard, in October 1981.

“I don’t think anyone, including myself, saw this coming,” Lin said after the game Monday.

Our tolerating ability is indeed way beyond our imagination. But not until the very critical moment will we realize our potential tolerating ability.

There was a woman in the countryside who got married at the age of 18 and had to escape with her two daughters and a son wherever she could at the age of 26 due to the Japanese army’s invasion. Many people in the village at that time could not bear the suffering of being a fugitive and wanted to commit sui cide. After she knew about it, she would come to those people and soothed them by saying, “Don’t do that silly thing. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome. The Japanese armies are bound to be foiled one day!”

Finally she insisted until the day when all the Japanese armies were kicked out of China.Nonethele, her son died of disease without sufficient medicine and nutrition in those days of hardships. Her husband, after knowing the death of his son, lay in bed for two days without eating and drinking anything. She teared to her husband and said, “We have a tough destiny, but however tough our lives will be, we should also persist.Though our son has paed away, we can have another. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome.”

After giving birth to the second son, her husband died of edema, which almost blew her away. But eventually, she recovered and cuddled the three young children, saying, “My sweet hearts, don’t feel scared. You still have me, your dear mum!”

It took her painstaking efforts to raise her children up and the life of her family was getting better and better. Two daughters were married and so was his son finally. She said to everyone she met, “Look! What I said is absolutely right. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome! My life is so happy now!” She was aging gradually and could not do the farm work any more.So she stayed at home and did some stitching work.

Neverthele, the Heaven seemed to show no affection to her who had undergone a rough life. She got her leg broken accidentally when she was nursing her grandson.Due to her old age that posed a great risk to her operation, she did not receive operation and had to lie in bed all day long. Her children all cried heavily, while she merely said, “Why do you cry? I am still living.”

Even though she could not rise from bed, she did not complain about anything and anybody.Instead, she sat on the bed and did some stitching work. She had learnt scarves-weaving, broidery, crafts-making, etc.All her neighbors spoke highly of her skills and came to learn from her.

She lived until 86.Before she went to Heaven, she said to her children, “You all should live to your best. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome!”

We will only get to realize our own iron will and strong tolerating ability after getting stricken heavily. Therefore, no matter what you are suffering from now, do not merely complain about the unfairne of our destiny and maintain low-spirited all the time. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome.Only those who have no confidence and courage to overcome setbacks will be defeated at last!

The Most Moving Story in the Bible

Word Count:560

Outline:

1.A brief introduction

2.The detailed description of the story

3.Conclusion

Text:

Among the bible stories, in my opinion, Moses’ story is the most attractive and moving. It’s mainly about the Hebrew hero Moses and his great contributions to his people.

Moses was a newborn son of a Hebrew woman. At that time, the king of Egypt gave orders to kill all Hebrew newborn boys and broke Israelites’ spirit by heavy labor because he was afraid of that those

powerful Israelites may become the masters of Egypt. The little boy was protected well by his mother for 3 months but she could conceal no longer. So the mother laid the baby in a basket and put the basket among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. The baby was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter and he became the prince of Egypt. The name Moses was given by pharaoh’s daughter.

Moses grew up.One day, he went to his Hebrew people and saw one was punished by an Egyptian. He killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand. But this was known by Pharaoh and he wanted to put Moses to death. So Moses made good in his escape and settled in the land of

Midian where he got married and God gave him the miion of leading Israelites out of Egypt.

Moses and his brother Aaron went to Pharaoh and asked him to set those Israelites free and Pharaoh refused.Moses turned his staff into a serpent as God told him.But Pharaoh was very obstinate and didn’t listen to Moses and Aaron. Then Moses changed the water of the Nile into blood and Pharaoh was obdurate as before.Moses had to perform other signs such as the disasters of frogs, maggots, flies and grahoppers, blights, murrain, disaster of hail and darkne, which still couldn’t persuade Pharaoh. At last, God killed all the first-borns in Egypt

including the first-born of Pharaoh and this made Pharaoh come to terms. When the king of Egypt was told that the Israelites had slipped away, he was seized with remorse. He took his troops to pursue Israelites and he nearly caught up with them by the sea. With God’s help Moses made the waters tear apart so that those Israelites went through the sea on the dry ground. But when Pharaoh’s troops arrived Moses made the water return to its accustomed place and all Pharaoh’s army were inundated. No one survived. This was Israelites’ great succe.

I like this story most because it presents the adamant people’s strong spirit of looking forward to freedom.Thought the Israelites were weak, they didn’t give in to the powerful king of Egypt. And the main hero was Moses who had strong will to save his people. He understood that the Egyptians were cruel and selfish. He gave up his happy life as a prince of Egypt in the palace and returned to his people. This is why God chose him to perform his miracles.Moses was the loyal follower of God and presented as the representative to deliver God’s ideas.Israelites showed

high admiration to him and he was worthy of it because of his great contributions to his people.
