Scenario 1 Mary: Good Morning.Welcome to Wuxi People’s Hospital.How can I help you?

John: I have a fever and would like to see a doctor.

Mary: How long have you been sick?

John: I have been sick for 2 days.

Mary: What other symptoms do you have?

John: I have congestion in my chest and my body aches.

Mary: Are you taking any medicines?

John: I have not been taking any medicines.

Mary: OK.Thank you for the information.The doctor will be with you shortly.

Scenario 2 Donna: Good afternoon.Welcome to Wuxi People’s hospital.How may I help you?

Lisa: I have a severe earache and need to see a doctor.

Donna: How long has it been hurting?

Lisa: It started hurting 3 days ago but began to really hurt badly last night.

Donna: Are both ears hurting?

Lisa: Yes, both ears are hurting.

Donna: Do you get earaches very often?

Lisa: I only get them after swimming in the pool.

Donna: Do you use earplugs when you swim?

Lisa: No.

Donna: Since you are susceptible to earaches, I would recommend that you always use earplugs when swimming.You should also be careful to avoid letting water get in your ear even when you are taking a bath or shower..Please take a seat and I will let you know when the doctor can see you.

Scenario 3 Sophia: How old is your daughter.

Lily: My daughter is 4 years old.

Sophia: How did she hurt herself?

Lily: She was getting out of the bath tub and slipped down and hurt her arm.

Sophia: Which arm did she hurt?

Lily: She injured her left arm. Sophia: Did she suffer any other injuries?

Lily: No she didn’t.

Sophia: How long has it been since she fell.

Lily: It was about 3 hours ago.

Sophia: OK.Please take a seat and I’ll arrange to have someone take you for X-Rays.

Scenario 4 Kelly: How did you injure your knee?

Kevin: I was playing basketball with my friends and I twisted it.

Kelly: When did this happen?

Kevin: Yesterday morning.

Kelly: You have quite a bit of swelling.Did you put ice on your knee as soon as it happened?

Kevin: Yes.

Kelly: Is this the first time that you’ve injured this knee?

Kevin: No.I hurt it the same way, playing basketball, about 2 years ago and had to have surgery.

Kelly: Do you remember what they told you when you had the surgery?

Kevin: Yes.I was told that I had a torn meniscus. Kelly: Was the surgery succeful?

Kevin: Yes.After the surgery I had physical rehab for several weeks and eventually returned to playing basketball.

Kelly: OK.We will need to get some X-Rays and pull the records from your last surgery.When you talk to the doctor you may want to discu the poibility of getting a knee brace to use when you play sports.

Scenario 5 Jennie: Good morning.How can I help you?

Joe: I burned my hand last night and I need some help.

Jennie: Which hand did you burn?

Joe: I burned my right hand.

Jennie: How did it happen?

Joe: I was cooking and I left a pan on the burner.A few minutes later I picked it up and forgot that it was hot.

Jennie: Did you put anything on it after you burned it.

Joe: Yes.I put some oil on it.

Jennie: You should never put oil on a burn.You should wash the burned area with cool water and immediately apply a disinfectant.After that, you should loosely apply a bandage.

Scenario 6 Dr.Wang: My nurse tells me that you are having trouble sleeping.How long have you had this problem?

Steve: I have been having trouble sleeping for the last four days.

Dr.Wang: Do you have a history of insomnia?

Steve: Yes.I have suffered with this problem for many years.

Dr.Wang: Is there anything in particular that seems to bring it on?

Steve: Yes.It usually occurs when I am under stre at work.

Dr.Wang: Stre is one of the most common causes of insomnia.Do you have any other problems such as depreion?

Steve: I am not suffering from any other problems.

Dr.Wang: Are you drinking a lot of tea or coffee.

Steve: I usually have a cup of tea in the morning and another one in the afternoon but never after about 2:00.

Dr.Wang: Do you exercise much?

Steve: Yes.I like to run.

Dr.Wang: When do you run?

Steve: I usually run in the morning.

Dr.Wang: Excellent.Exercising late at night can also be a problem as it can act as a stimulant.

Steve: Can you give me some medicine to help me sleep. Dr.Wang: Yes.There are a number of good sleeping pills but they all carry some risks.Steve: What are the dangers?

Dr.Wang: All sleeping pills carry the risk of dependency.However, as long as you are careful and do not use the medicine for more than a couple of weeks, you should be fine.

Scenario 7 Doris: Good morning.How can I help you?

Joe: I fell down riding my bicycle and hurt my side.

Doris: Which side did you injure?

Joe: I hurt my left side.

Doris: When you fell, what did you land on?

Joe: I landed on the concrete curb.

Doris: Does it hurt all the time?

Joe: No.It mainly hurts when I take a deep breath.

Doris: It sounds as though you may have cracked a rib.Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done for that except to give you some medicine to make you more comfortable.We will take you for some X-Rays and you will be able to see the doctor soon.

Scenario 8 Liz: Good evening.Welcome to Wuxi People’s Hospital.How may I help you? Richard: I have a really bad cough that worries me.

Liz: Do you have any other symptoms such as a fever or diarrhea?

Richard: I did have a 39.5 temperature but now it’s back to normal.

Liz: Do you have any diarrhea?

Richard: No.

Liz: When you cough, is anything coming up or is it a dry cough?

Richard: When I cough there is a lot of phlegm.

Liz: Do you smoke?

Richard: No.I do not smoke.

Liz: Very good.We will need to get a chest X-Ray and then you can see the doctor.

Scenario 9 Ann: Good morning.Welcome to Wuxi People’s Hospital.How can I help you?

Carol: My daughter has been vomiting since yesterday and doesn’t seem to be able to keep any food down.

Ann: How old is your daughter?

Carol: She is 7 years old.

Ann: Does she have any other symptoms? Carol: No.Ann: She doesn’t have a fever or diarrhea?

Carol: No.

Ann: Has she had anything unusual to eat or drink?

Carol: She did eat some pork chops that had been in the refrigerator for several days.

Ann: That is probably what it was.Did you eat any of the pork.?

Carol: I ate some yesterday but I did not get sick.

Ann: The meat could have gone bad in a 24 hour period.I would suggest that you throw it out as soon as you get home.We will want to do some blood work to see if your daughter may have contracted food poisoning.
