Today I read the paper “Chinatowns under threat from gentrification” on ChinaDaily.

The articleput thatChinatowns are at risk of disappearing due to accelerated gentrification, in large US cities. The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fundfound that the Asian populations in all communities are decreasing while rent and median housing value are increasing.

Because of the rising house price, commercial development and institutional expansion, many lands in Chinatown have been developed into high-end condos and office buildings. At the same time, the decline of manufacturing has contributed to gentrification as many former industrial spaces have become high-end condos.Soitlead to the change in the population structure of Chinatown, from families and working immigrants to non-family households, including students, young profeionals, artists and designers.Family households in Chinatown are on the decline. In New York’s Chinatown, the number of family households decreased by 12.6 percent in a decade, while non-family households increased by 21.4 percent. To help preserve the Chinatowns, the author recommended that funding be directed toward building more low-income and senior housing units for residents, as well as giving subsidies to small businees.

On this paper, I seem to see the shadow of contemporary Chinese Society. Now, China are being highly developing and many land are urgent need.It often occurs that somebody’s lands are forced to be taken over.In order to get the land, the developers have made a lot of violence. To protect their land ,Some people have died in the conflict. To obtain huge profits, developers have been trying every means to get the land. They even removed some Buddhist monasteries and cultural relics for the sake of getting more commercial land. With the higher and higher prices in land and price, the young people are under more and more preure, especially for newly graduated students.

长难句

Boston\'s Chinatown had to fight Tufts University and the New England Medical Center expanding;New York dealt with a shrinking garment industry after the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which made way for million-dollar lofts; and office and factory conversions into hotels in preparation for the 2000 Republican National Convention changed Chinatown\'s landscape in Philadelphia.

So the fact that there are so many hotels in the neighborhood seems a little inconsistent, especially as developers are to promote the neighborhood as a place for tourists, because in fact, residents are needing a lot more resources than tourists are.

社区附近有许多酒店的事实似乎有点矛盾,因为事实上,尤其是当开发商致力于让社区成为一个游客光顾的的地方时,居民们正需要比游客更多的资源。
