Americans use many expreions with theword dog.People in the United States lovetheir dogs and treat them well.They taketheir dogs for walks, let them play outsideand give them good food and medical care.However, dogs without owners to care forthem lead a different kind of life.Theexpreion, to lead a dog\'s life, describes aperson who has an unhappy existence.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dogworld.That means many people arecompeting for the same things, like goodjobs.They say that to be succeful, aperson has to work like a dog.This meansthey have to work very, very hard.Suchhard work can make people dog-tired.And,the situation would be even worse if theybecame sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day.Thismeans that every person enjoys a succefulperiod during his or her life.To besucceful, people often have to learn newskills.Yet, some people say that you cannever teach an old dog new tricks.Theybelieve that older people do not like to learnnew things and will not change the waythey do things.
Some people are compared to dogs in badways.People who are unkind or uncaringcan be described as meaner than a junkyarddog.Junkyard dogs live in places wherepeople throw away things they do notwant.Mean dogs are often used to guardthis property.They bark or attack peoplewho try to enter the property.However,sometimes a person who appears to bemean and threatening is really not so bad.We say his bark is worse than his bite.
A junkyard is not a fun place for a dog.Manydogs in the United States sleep in safe littlehouses near their owners\' home.Thesedoghouses provide shelter.Yet they can becold and lonely in the winter.
Husbands and wives use this doghouse termwhen they are angry at each other.Forexample, a woman might get angry at herhusband for coming home late or forgettingtheir wedding anniversary.She might tell himthat he is in the doghouse.
She may not treat him nicely until heapologizes.However, the husband maydecide that it is best to leave things aloneand not create more problems.He mightdecide to let sleeping dogs lie.
Dog expreions also are used to describethe weather.The dog days of summer arethe hottest days of the year.A rainstormmay cool the weather.But we do not wantit to rain too hard.We do not want it to raincats and dogs.
