孙宁，1981年生于南京。1993年考取南京外国语学校，其间获全国中学生英语能力竞赛和中澳国际英语能力竞赛高中组特等奖。1999年保送北京外国语大学英语系口译专业 8月入外交部翻译室工作，次年9月公派赴英国留学。
孙宁在2009年3月第十一届全国人大二次会议上为发言人李肇星担任口译。 以下是他当年参加第七届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛获冠军时的演讲：

三十年前，美国总统理查德·尼克松来中国进行了具有划时代意义的访问，那时中国正受到美国孤立。周恩来总理对他说了这样一番话：“你与我的握手越过了世界上最为辽阔的海洋，这个海洋就是互不交往的25年。”自从那以后，美国和中国已经握过多次不同的手。这一事件充分表明:不同文化、不同意识形态之间的交流不仅仅是两个国家的需要和愿望，也是更多其它国家的心声。
