Conference Addre

Mr.President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon, and thank you for inviting me to the “International Conference on Leadership”.I feel privileged to have been asked to be with the people of Tsinghua University and addre the iue of “The Importance of Working Together”.

It is always a pleasure to be among the best and the brightest in an atmosphere of learning.The university setting is the best incubator that exists for the inception and sharing of ideas.The agenda you’ve set forth here for the next two-and-a-half days is one that goes to the heart of what is exciting and important to busine and industry today.

I’ve been asked to share my thoughts with you today about moving from “me” thinking to “we” thinking.My view is simple: individuals add; team players multiply.

Tsinghua undergrads are fortunate in that more and more.Your university is encouraging teamwork in your case work, stimulating the translating from “me ” to “we”.

At Wilson, we, too, are making great strides in breaking down the psychological and organizational barriers that result from “me” thinking.Even though we have more yet to do, we have been reaping exciting rewards by effectively using work teams to reengineer procees to gain improvements in costs, quality and response times.

More than five years ago, we began gathering the leaders of all Wilson divisions together monthly for the purpose of integrating separate efforts of authority, sharing best practices and seeking creative ways to use our resources cro-functionally.Also, we’ve been using work teams to shorten new product development cycles; to implement demand flow manufacturing to shorter delivery cycles to customers and reduce inventory; and to encourage innovation in all busine proce.The cumulative result of these efforts is the healthy and sustained busine growth in the last five years.

Our succe shows in earnings per share that have grown at an average compound annual rate of 24 percent.Our operating margins have increased by more than 65 percent.We have reduced working capital investments by about 56 percent, increased inventory turnover by nearly 43 percent, reduced outstanding receivables by over 15 percent, and saved $150 million in purchasing costs via a corporate-wide strategic sourcing initiative.

These efforts have persuaded fourteen key analysts, who follow the company, to recommend that investors buy our stock.

But, as much as I enjoy talking about Wilson, I’m not here to boast about the succees that were made poible through teamwork.The truth is that while we at Wilson think we are doing unusually well with what we are doing, how we are doing it is not unusual in the busine and manufacturing industries today.

Increasingly, U.S.companies are becoming relationship-focused.We seek to be customer-driven.We want to partner with suppliers.We are moving from a manufacturing economy to a value-added, service-oriented economy.And at the heart of service are relationships: international relationships, intergroup relationships, and

interdepartmental relationships.

The ascendance of work teams in large U.S.organizations puts a new premium on the relationship of team members.In fact, emphasis on teamwork has long become the most frequently valued managerial competence in studies of organizations around the world.About half the Fortune 500 companies say they are using self-managed work teams and expect to expand their use in coming years.

Team work, for many of us, is a big switch from we’re accustomed to functioning.And that’s especially true for those of you at the beginning of your careers.Some people never get out of the individual contributor mode because they have limited expertise with the interpersonal skills required for team-building.But the highly-effective people of succe are those who move from child-like dependence to interdependence, and the onto interdependence, or win-win, “we ” thinking.

Team work really builds.If there’s no trust and honesty among employers and everyone is maneuvering based on what it might to for their own careers, you’re not going to accomplish much.An old Oriental proverb that “people with one mind will remove Mount Tai” is true.Another way is to consider this: individuals add; team players multiply.Of course, as the whole is never the sum of its parts, it may be greater or leer, depending on how well the individuals work together.

A good team leader is one who can create group synergy in order to pursue collective goals.If you are not going to be a good bo, make sure that you support people and keep the group working well.That’s an important leon I learned from one of my former chief executive officers, who held me for my countable beliefs- in fact, there were times he held my feet to the fire-but he never held a grudge against me for believing in something different from what he believed in.

You’re never too old to learn something new.There’s plenty of research that proves that emotional intelligence skills can be learned.Honed, and enjoyed at any stage in life.It’s called the “acquisition of wisdom”, and it’s a lifetime project.Remember this: individuals add; team players multiply.

在这个美好的季节,第七届20国集团财长和央行行长会议在中国举行。我谨代表中国政府和人民,对会议的召开表示热烈的祝贺!向与会的各国财长,央行行长和国际金融机构的代表,表示热烈的欢迎!

这次会议确定以“加强全球合作:实现世界经济平衡有序发展”为主题,具有重要意义。我相信,会议围绕这个一主题进行深入讨论并形成共识,将对促进世界经济增长和各国共同发展产生积极影响。

当前,各国政府和人民对世界经济发展的的状况高度关注。一方面,和平与发展仍是当今的主题,经济全球化趋势深入发展,以信息科技,生物科技为主要标志的现代科技进步日新月异,国际产业转移和生产要素流动加快,各国正面临着难得的发展机遇。另一方面,世界发展不平衡问题日益突出,南北差距进一步拉大,金融风暴时有发生,贸易壁垒和保护主义有新的表现。面对这一情况,我们必须加强国际合作,共同把握机会,携手用对挑战,推动世界经济平衡有序发

展。这是世界人民共同愿望,也是时代的必然要求。为此,我愿提出以下4点主张。

第一, 要尊重模式发展的多样性。充分利用经济全球化带来的有利条件

和机遇,促进世界不同发展模式在竞争比较中取长补短,在求同

存异中共同发展,不断为世界经济发展注入新的活力,使世界经

济充满活力地向前发展。

第二, 要加强各国宏观经济政策的对话和协调。特别是要加强在一些涉

及世界经济发展全局和各国共同利益的重大问题上的协调,以共

同促进世界经济平很有序发展。

第三, 要完善世界经济贸易体制和规则。为世界经济增长营造公平,稳

定,高效的金融环境,营造安全,经济,清洁的能源环境,营造

公开,公正合理,非歧视的贸易环境。

第四, 要帮助发展中国家加快发展,逐步建立长期,全面的新型南北合

作伙伴关系,在互利互惠,取长补短中实现共赢。中国最近宣布

在关税,减免债务,优惠贷款,公共卫生,人力资源开发等5个

方面采取新的援助措施,为发展中国家加快发展提供支持。中国

将积极落实这些措施。

女士们,先生们!

20国集团会议机制,涵盖了世界最主要的发达国家,发展中国家和转轨国家,成员

国人口占世界总人口的三分之二,国内生产总值占世界国内生产总值的90%以上,对外贸易额占世界贸易额的80%,是一个具有广泛代表性的重要国际经济论坛。

在当前国际形势下,20国集团各成员应该在平等互利、求同存异、灵活务实的基础上开展对话,加强同其他国际和区域经济机构的交流合作,以增进互信、扩大共识、协调行动,在健全国际经济贸易体制和规则、完善国际金融体系、加强南北对话和合作、促进全球减免和发展等方面,发挥更大、更积极实质性作用。

女士们、先生们!

改革开放27年来,中国社会主义市场经济体制已经初步建立,全方位对外开放格局已经基本形成,经济持续对外开放,经济持续快速发展,人民生活总体上实现了由温饱到小康的历史性跨越。同时我们也清醒的认识到,中国仍然是世界上最大的发展中国家,人口多,底子薄,发展不平衡,资源环境压力突出,人民生活水平还不高。中国的现代化建设还有很长的路要走,还需要进行长期的艰苦奋斗。

中国已经确定了全国建设小康社会的发展目标。我们准备再时用15年时间,把国内生产总值提高到40000亿美元左右,人均提高到3000美元左右,是经济更加发展、民主更加健全、科教更加进步、社会更加和谐、人民生活水平更加殷实。中国经济保持良好的发展势头,不仅将造福13亿中国人民,也将为世界各国带来巨大的商机和市场。

我们将坚持以科学发观统领经济发展全局,坚持扩大内需的方针,坚持走科技含量高、经济效益好、资源消耗低、环境污染少、人力资源优势得到充分发挥的新型工业化道路,加快调整经济结构,转变经济增长方式,提高自主创新能力,不断深化改革开放,促进城乡区域协调发展,加强和谐社会建设,

切实把经济社会发展转入以人为本、全面协调可持续发展的轨道。 女士们、先生们!

中国将坚定不移的走和平发展道路,努力实现和平的发展、开放的发展、合作的发展。让我们顺应人民的愿望和时代的潮流,共同推动建立国际经济新秩序,共同促进世界经济平衡有序发展,共同努力建设一个持久和平、共同繁荣的和谐社会。
