This ma-election of the 23rd English club provides an excellent chance for you to learn, practice, and refine your skills of public speaking.Long after the competition is over, you will continue to benefit from the opportunity to prepare and present a speech.Whatever career you persue, you will almost certainly need strong public speaking skills. As one busine leader has stated, if you want to get to the top of your profeion, you must have “the ability to stand on your feet, either on a one-to-one basis or before a group, and make a presentation that is convincing and believable.” Now I’d like to say a few words about your performance.I think some of you have tried your best.Xxx’s speech captured my attention. He was confident in giving his speech and it was quite informative. He aroused the excitement of the audience and judges.

If you were to memorize Martin Luther King’s “ I Have a Dream” and stand up to recite it to an audience, would you get the same response King got from his listeners? Not likely. Why not? Because you would not deliever the speech as King did.Of course, the words of King’s speech are deeply moving. But King brought something extra to the words---his perfectly timed cadences, his gestures, eye contact, and facial expreions. All these are part of an expert delievery. It would take you years of practice---as it took King---to duplicate his results.

There are some tips to make a succeful public speech.Namely, voice, physical action and eye contact.Effective delievery depends partly on how the speaker uses his or her voice. One element of vocal delievery is the rate (or speed) at which a speaker talks. Most native speakers of English talk at a rate between 125 and 150 words per minute, but there is no uniform rate for effective speechmaking. In fact, a speaker’s rate can change from one part of the speech to another.Matin Luthur King began “I Have a Dream” at a rate of 92 words per minute and finished it at 145.The best rate of speech depends on several things--- the vocal attributes of the speaker, the mood he or she is trying to create, the composition of the audience, and the nature of the occasion. If you were speaking on the radio, you would not need to worry about any aspect of speech delivery other than your voice. However, your audience at the competition will see you as well as hear you. What you communicate with your physical action will have an impact on the outcome of your speech.A good rule to keep in mind is this: Whatever gestures you use should not distract from your meage. They should appear natural (even though they may be fully rehearsed) and they should help clarify or reinforce your ideas.Otherwise, you should concentrate on communicating with your audience and let your gestures take care of themselves.Practicing in front of a mirror is one way to check your gestures.Even better is to videotape your practice seions so you can see yourself as your audience will see you.Videotyping also allows you check your facial expreions.Pay attention as well to your eye contact. While patterns of eye contact in everyday conversation very from culture to culture, there is wide agreement acro cultures about the importance of eye contact in public speaking, Looking at your audience while you are speaking is one of the best ways to establish a bond with them. There is also a good deal of research to show that speakers who maintain strong eye contact are seen as more credible, more honest, and more sincere.

Finally, I just want to say nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into it.Please keep imitating, reciting and speaking in front of a group.Keep in mind that it is only one step---albeit a significant one---in your growth as speaker and as a person.Use it as a foundation to build upon in the future.Seek additional opportunities for public speaking.Continue to develop your skills and confidence. You may be very pleased where the journey begun at the competition will eventually take you.
