My Comment on The Sea Wolf
“The Sea Wolf ” is indeed an excellent novel that I ever read.When the name first came into my sight, I thought that it was a novel about the hunting of a sea wolf, just like “The Old Man and the Sea”.However, as I pursued it, I came to realize that it was a story about the captain, Wolf Larsen, who is a human wolf, a beast, and a great and true love.Though the scene was full of blood, brutishne and fighting, the language was beautiful and it led you to continue to read it.
The novel tells us the story of a thrilling fighting between death and life and a great and moving love on the sealing ship named Ghost.The storyteller, Humphrey Van Weyden, was a student and also a writer.He wanted to visit a friend who lived acro the California Bay.He took a ferryboat named Martinez on San Francisco Bay one January morning.However, the Martinez was hit and broken and sunk by another ferryboat.Hump then was rescued by the Ghost, a sealing ship.His life was beginning to change from the moment of his life saving.On the sealing ship, he saw that some sailors of the ship were badly treated, and even crudely killed.He became to realize that he was on the ship of death.All the sailors feared and hated the captain, Wolf Larsen.The environment made them beasts, lack of sympathy, and full of hatred.Everyone wanted to kill the captain so that they could be released from those relieves.
And Hump also suffered a lot.Later, Hump was interested in Wolf Larsen, finding that he had keen interest in literature, art, philosophy etc.Soon, they had common topic to communicate.And, Hump learned a lot and got a better treatment than others.Two sailors escaped from the ship in that Wolf Larsen brought too many terror and blooding fights to them.As the story came to chapter18, a woman was rescued from a small ferryboat.Her name was Maud Brewster, a beautiful and talented woman.Both Wolf Larsen and Hump fell in love with her.But Maud Brewster learned that Wolf Larsen was a terrible and brutish man, she would not accept him.Fortunately, Hump and Brewster knew each other before without meeting.For both were famous writers.Gradually, they liked each other.And Hump began to plan for their escape to avoid dying in the hand of Wolf Larsen.Later the ship met with Macedonia, whose captain was Wolf’s brother, Death Larsen.They had hatred toward each other through the time.In order to buy the heart of those sailors, Wolf ordered to give them some liquor to drink.All the sailors were drunk except for Wolf, Hump and Brewster for they didn’t drink.Maybe the God always gives opportunity to those who were just, kind and prepared minds.That day Wolf had a bad headache and retired to his bed early.Hump and Brewster escaped in a open boat.They were sailing alone on the dark sea.Though coming acro many difficulties, they conquered at last and got to the shore of a small island.They called it the Endeavor Island.There were thousands and millions seals on the island.And they put up a tent to live in.Several days paing, they found the Ghost was shored but broken and only Wolf was on the ship.Hump wanted to repair the ship and leaved the island, but Wolf intended to destroy his plan.However, Wolf was blind and he was unable to succeed.At last, Wolf suffered grave illne and died tragically.The couple finally was rescued on the Ghost.
The characters in the novel are quite vivid.They present us with a full imagination space.My favorite is Wolf Larsen.
Wolf Larsen, just like his name, was really a wolf.The depiction of the life on the Ghost led us to an unbridled and uncouth wildne, to experience the coldne and indifference of their life, and to feel the black side of human nature and the brightne of the primitive society.All of these were created by Wolf Larsen.He was a fighter, a strong and also handsome man.And he was not an untaught beast like the other men on the ship, though he acted like one.In fact, he read many great writers, such as Shakespeare, Tennyson and Poe.He liked science, literature, philosophy, etc.He had many strong thoughts.He believed that “the only value life has is the value life put on itself”.That is to say, the life’s value is only important to oneself not to others, which presents us with a selfish and immoral man.And I regard him as a “manhood” trainer.He trained Hump to be an independent and to be a real man.He said, “Life was cheap and dirty, and the sooner it was finished the better.” But he also believed that “One’s soul can live forever.” He was lonely and sad in his deep heart.However, sadne and sense of disappointment caused people to find religion.But Wolf Larsen would not.And nothing remained for him but to be devilish.His death was a tragedy.During his last days, his hearing, sense of motion and vision were totally lost.At that time, I began to have sympathy for him.If having chosen a right direction, he may become a hero or a man who can achieve something valuable.The reason is that he has the talent or gift.He was uneducated, but through his efforts he could read many books, and became a captain.He should deserve some reputation.A tragic character he was.
Jack London gave us a captain Wolf Larsen, who is supposed to be the proto-superman, which he had learned from the popular but very misleading version of Nietzsche.It is such a heart- quaking story that I will never forget it.
