Comment about A Tale of Two Cities

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishne, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkne, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”These words stem from A Tale of Two Cities that deeply impre upon me.The turbulent times rises to view and i sink into deliberation about French Revolution.

It is universally known by us that the French Revolution is further engraved on human history.A Tale of Two Cities, one of the most representative works of Dickens, truly describes the cruel and decay of aristocracy. This novel profoundly exposes the society contradiction before the French Revolution ,intensely criticizes the tyrannical nobility and sincerely sympathizes with the depreed claes. The novel also describes many magnificent scenes like the revolt people attacked Bastille and so on,which displays people\'s great strength.Lost in the story,I feel like being together with the characters and experiencing the same exciting events.Dickens’s

thought that blood can’t replace the love come to my mind.

A Tale of Two Cities is based on the broad and real background of the French Revolution in 18 century.Dr.Manette was set free from the Bastille after 18 years and went to Landon with his daughter Lucie .They testified for a French young man Darnay in the court after 5 years.Luice and Darnay fell in love and they got married.Unfortunately, Darnay was arrested and sentenced to death because of his noble status during the French Revolution in 1789.Finally,Carton,who felt deeply attached to Luice all the time, took her husband Darnay’s place at the guillotine.

For one thing ,Carton is the most glamorous and complex in the novel. He held a decadent attitude to life. When he was in school,he only substituted clamates for doing their homework.Even though he had rich talent ,he still chose to dumbly work.No one can feel his deep affection through his seeming indifference. He was soft and clinging in love with Lucie and even sacrified his life for her. What he did kept Lucie’s happine. This love is so cherish and valuable in any times.

For another thing ,Madame Defarge signified slaughter. She lived for hatred because her families were killed by Carton’s uncle and father. The callous Madame Defarge made a chill run down my

back.I have to marvel at the power of hatred.France turn into inferno by the flame of revenge at the end of 18 century.

Some other figures of the novel are extolled by the author.Dr.Manette is upright ,lofty ,kindhearted and tolerant.Lucie represents love.Darnay is the person who point a way out for aristocracy. The virtues of these persons are appreciated by Dickens who is a humanist.

The author ,Dickens,is the representative person of English realistic literature in 19 century. He excels in writing with humor and mental analysis. At meanwhile,he likes to combine the realistic description with romantic atmosphere. This novel reflects the promiscuity and savage of French noble ,misery of people and history of the French Revolution .It alludes to the social fact of England.

I’m completely in favor of what Carton said before his death.”Resurrection in my life on me, believe me, though he were dead, also will be raised; Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”Dickens wanted to cure the worst of times by that, but in vain. From my point of view, this immortal novel will lose its value and brilliance without the existence and actions of Carton. The death of Carton just like a feather softly drifting down to the surface of

water,no algae bloom ,but ripples .It reminds us that the real equality and liberty can’t be founded by the guillotine.

The leons of A Tale of Two Cities should be kept in our mind forever. As the saying goes,“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.”The future will get better with the hope of creating a new century of equality ,liberty and indiscriminate love.
