Module 3 Literature Period II Reading and vocabulary (1) I.Target material :

The target material is Vocabulary and Reading (1) from Module Three Literature, New Standard English Book 7 for Senior Two students , published by Foreign Language and Research Pre.II.Teaching goals: 1.Knowledge and skills: (1) Get students master some words, phrases and sentence patterns.e.g.warden, appetite, pick out, nudge, misery, hang, serve, eager, whiper, in astonishment, support, seize, lock, workhouse, in astonishment… (2) Help students to know more about British literature.(3) Help students to improve their reading abilities.2.Strategy development: (1) Be able to use skimming and scanning skills to find the information needed.(2) Be able to understand some difficult sentences with the aistance of context clues.(3) Help the cla develop the habit of gueing the meanings of unfamiliar vocabulary items with the help of context clues.(4) help the cla to develop the habit of predicting the contents of the reading materials with questions, titles or pictures before reading.

1 3.Emotion and value By reading this paage, the Ss can learn more about British claical literature and the English siciety in the Victorian period .Meanwhile, we should encourage the students to try to develop a habit of reading literary works written in English .III..Focuses: 1.Help the students learn more about British literature. 2.Train students’ skimming and scanning abilities.IV.Difficulties: 1.Summarize the paragraph.2.Improve the students\' reading ability. V.Methods: 1.Task-Based Language Learning.2.Cooperative Learning.VI.Aids: multimedia VII.Procedures: Step 1.Revision and lead-in Step 2.Prediction Look at the pictures and predict what the paage is about and what Oliver asked for.The following questions can help the students.1.What does Oliver look like?

2 2.What is he doing? 3.What does the tall man look like? Will he give him more? 4.What will happen next? Step 3.Reading Task 1: Read the paage from Oliver Twist and choose the best summary.(a).The boys in the workhouse decided that they needed more food.Oliver Twist said that he would ask the warden for more to eat.(b) .The boys in the workhouse were starving and chose Oliver Twist to ask for more food.When Oliver did this, the workhouse managers were very angry and locked Oliver in a room.(c) .The boys in the workhouse chose Oliver Twist to ask for more food.When he did this, the workhouse managers were very angry and sent Oliver out to work.Task 2: Read the paage again, divide the paage into three parts and try to find out the main idea of each paragraph.1.How many parts can you divide the paage into? 2.What is the main idea of each part? Part 1:The boys in the workhouse became quite wild with hunger. Part 2:They chose Oliver to ask for more food and he did so.

Part 3:The workhouse managers were angry and locked Oliver in a room.

3 Task 3: Read the paage again and answer the following questions.1.Why did the boys stare at the pot after eating a bowl of soup? 2.Why did the boys decide to choose one of them to ask for more food? 3.What did the warden do when Oliver repeated his words? 4.In order to punish Oliver, what did the managers do? 5.How do you feel after reading this paage? Reflection :

1.This period mainly aims at developing students’ reading ability.I design a series of activities to achieve the teaching aims, such as predicting the text, gueing the meaning of some words according to the context, skimming the text to find out the topic sentence of each paragraph , scanning the text to find out some details about it,summarizing and retelling the text etc.The teaching design of this cla is reasonable.2.The computer-aisted teaching aids contribute to improving the efficiency of this leon by increasing the input of information.3.The post-reading task provides the students with an opportunity to output information , solving problems in a real situation and using what they have learned to serve them.The whole cla is operated in English, which accords with the requirements of New Standard English .4.Each cycle of the whole cla goes very smoothly.The students take an active part in the cla activities and have a better understanding of the text .

5.The shortcoming of the cla is that retelling the text hasn’t been

6 practised for enough time.The students should be given more opportunities to practise their oral English.
