making friends with you.A few hours ago we met as strangers but now you leave as our new friends.Although your stay in Xiamen is only 4hours ,but your smile on your faces will always be in my mind.I greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding ,it made my job easy and smoothly.And I apologize for anything that you aren’t satisfied .I hope I will do my job better in the future.And I hope you will visit our city again and stay much longer, in that case I can show you more about Xiamen.When you back to your home please say hello to your families and your friends .I sincerely hope they will visit Xiamen too.Thank you very much again for your coming .I wish you a good journey.Bon voyage.
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO XIAMEN CITY
A beautiful seaport city—Xiamen is situated in the southeastern part of Fujian(Fukien) province.It’s the second largest city in the province.It’s also on the west bank of the Taiwan Strait .Xiamen is only 695 nautical miles from Shanghai and 287 nautical miles from Hongkong.Xiamen city(Local people call it Amoy) covers an area of 1516 square kilometers with a population of 3.35million .The city proper was an island with an area of 131 square kilometers and has a population of 1.5million.Because Xiamen is in the subtropical zone, so the climate is subtropical.Through the year the average temperature is 21 degrees centigrade(about 70 degree Fahrenheit).It isn’t cold in winter and hot in summer.So we say it’s spring all the year round.The annual rainfall(precipitation) is about 1200mm.Fine weather and enough rainfall provide good conditions for various kinds of flowers and fruits.So you can see flowers everywhere and fruits in the markets.We local residents really enjoy these natural resources.By the way let me tell you something about the city flower,city bird and city tree.The city flower is bougainvillea.It has colourful flowers all year round.Each flower has three bracts in the shape of triangle, so it is called the “Triangle Plum” in Chinese.And the city tree is Phoenix tree .It is named Phoenix tree because its leaves are like the tail of the Phoenix—a mysterious bird in legend.It blooms in June and July.The red flowers are very beautiful and always attract lots of people.And our city bird is egret—a white bird that locals like it very much.The local residents voted in the egret as their city bird in 1986.Nowdays the name “egret” is the most popular name used in Xiamen in every part of the life of local people.Especially the parents in Xiamen like to name their girls in the word of egret.The Xiamen island is also called egret island .The strait we are going to cro is called egret river.So here in Xiamen we have Egret River Hotel, Egret River School , Egret River University etc.Since China opened to the outside world in 1978, The Chinese government decided to set up special economic zones in coastal cities in 1980.Xiamen was chosen as one of the special economic zone in 1981.So it is the 30th
anniversary of the founding of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone this year .The other three are in Guangdong province and one is Hainan province.Altogether we have five special economic zones in China now.Originally the SEZ in Xiamen was only 2.5 square kilometers .And in 1984,after Senior Leader Dengxiaoping inspected South China, the Central Government decided to expend the SEZ to the whole Xiamen island including Gulangyu islet.So we say Xiamen now enjoys special economic policies,management systems and flexible measures as well as some free port policies.Xiamen is one of the hometowns of the overseas Chinese.Nowadays there are more than 30 million overseas Chinese in the world.And 90% came from Fujian and Guangdong provinces.They can mostly speak Fukien dialect, Cantonese and Hakka.

is sung by the Chinese people. It is really a must to the visitors to Xiamen.The islet is famous because of its music ,the architecture of building and a place without any cars (golf cars only), it means no traffic noise. These are the three characteristics of the islet.
