理想与现实总是充满了矛盾，它们往往不可调和。但社会是现实的，他不可能为一个人的理想而改变，而人们为了自己的理想，就只能不断奋斗。

可是，有些时候，即使人们为了自己的理想不断奋斗了，最终却不一定能真正获得成功。就像祥子一样：
祥子来自农村，在他拉上租来的洋车以后，立志买一辆车自己拉，做个独立的劳动者。他年轻力壮，正当生命的黄金时代，又勤劳耐苦，不惜用全部力量去达到这一目的。在强烈的信心和支持下，经过三年的努力，他用自己的血汗钱换来了一辆洋车。但是没过多久，军阀的乱兵抢走了他的车；接着反动派政府的侦探又诈去了他仅有的积蓄；主人为了躲避特务追踪，又使他丢了比较安定的工作；虎妞对他的那种推脱不开的爱，又给他的身心带来了折磨。迎着这一个又一个打击，他做过挣扎，仍然执拗地想用更大的努力来实现自己梦寐以求的生活愿望。但这一切都是徒然：用虎妞的积蓄买了一辆车，很快又不都不卖掉以料理虎妞的丧事。他的这一愿望“像个鬼影，永远抓不牢，而空受那些辛苦与委屈”；在经过多次挫折以后，终于完全破灭。他所爱的小福子的自杀，吹熄了心中最后一朵希望的火花：他丧失了对于生活任何祈求和信心，从上进好强而沦为自甘堕落。原来那个正直善良的祥子，被生活的磨盘碾得粉碎。
纵观祥子的一生，充满了理想与现实的矛盾:他想拥有自己的车，却三次破灭；他想拥有自己的爱情，却与爱人阴阳两隔；他想独立生存下去，却堕落成行尸走肉。无疑小说中祥子的悲剧是当时的社会造成的，正如周恩来所说的：国家没有前途，个人会有什么前途?!可是是否在当时的社会环境中我们就该放弃我们的理想？换句话说，是否当我们达成理想的希望渺茫时就自甘堕落？我想不是。虽然有人说过“人生就是一场悲剧”。可人生的意义不就在于我们的奋斗吗？倘无奋斗，庸庸碌碌的度过此生，我们就可能真的成为这场悲剧的主角。祥子起初在遭受磨难时，能够忘记痛苦、重新屹立、不断奋斗，可是在两次三番遭遇失败后，他又调转航向，如一艘迷失海雾中的小船，冲向礁石，与之同灭。可他哪曾想到，海雾只不过是数日罢了，阳光总会到达的。
因此，生长在新世纪的我们，没有冷酷的社会对我们的摧残，理想之路似乎平坦了些，但理想与现实的矛盾依然存在，唯有不断奋斗，方能成就伟业，方能成仁！
