According to George Bernard Shaw, every progre means a war with the tradition.Tradition and innovation, which is more important? Are they really conflict with each other? I don’t think so.Instead, they are complementary to each other.Good old traditions should be inherited.However, it is not enough only to do that.We must also create new things after we inherited old things.Tradition and innovation are indispensible to each other.Innovation without basing on tradition is like a tree without roots.While only sticking to tradition without intention of innovation is like a pool of stagnant water.As to me, innovation is more important than tradition for it can promote the progre of human civilization.
Try to imagine what the society would be like now without so many existing inventions.You may have to ride a horse or a donkey instead of cars to go outside.Thinking about the speed, you will cost a lot of time to go out.With the invention of cars, planes and ships, you can go sightseeing for a thousand mile in one day, which can’t be imagined by the ancient people.You do not have to spend all the day calculating a large number of data because the computer can solve it in several minutes.In such an information age, you can know what’s happening in the world only by sitting in the office.All of these are the innovations in the development of the world.
Owing to the achievements of predeceors, we can enjoy all the fruits conveniently and comfortably now.If we try to look back to the proce, we can find those achievements contain many sweat, blood and even scarifies of life.So many great men sacrificed everything for their belief just to give life more color.Compared with them, what we have done is far from enough.Thus we have no reasons to sit idle and enjoy the fruits of others’ work.We must also devote ourselves to innovation instead of squandering the already achievements.
Then what main spirit does innovation need?
Innovation needs skeptical and critical spirit.A skeptical attitude is the bud of innovation while to be critical is the growth of innovation.A typical example is Bruno.He put forward cosmology and believed that the Earth revolves around the sun.This idea was unacceptable by the people at that time.Every one cursed him and laughed at him, but he adhered to his belief and was
skeptical to the tradition.At last, he was burned, but time proved that he was right.
Innovation also needs profound thinking.As we know Archimedes discovered floating law while he was bathing.Newton discovered gravity by seeing apple drop.Sometimes innovation is really not that difficult.You can always have a spark in your mind, and then you may find something new.Thus innovation requires us to grasp the eential aspects and to think deeply. Naturally, innovation needs constant working.Such as Edison, who experimented for thousands of times before he choose tungsten filament for the bulb.Just because of such spirit he was able to hold more than 2000 inventions.Consequently, hard working is also a neceity to innovation.
As college students, our knowledge are still inadequate, we may not be able to have many great innovations.But we must foster innovative consciousne which requires following aspects: firstly, we must learn to dream, and not to be confined to the present.We can dream about flying to Mars, living in outer space and something else instead of being slaved by villas, cars and materials.Then we also have to be skeptical and critical.We should not always subject to authorities.Those written in the books are not always truth.Thirdly, we should have profound thinking.Fourthly, we have to work hard and not to give up.
To sum up, you can see father by standing on the shoulders of predeceors.So inherit the good old traditions, meanwhile devote yourself to innovations.
