A Scene to RememberGu

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical 1) therapist(临床医学家) who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census(普查) about mountain 3) gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witneed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we\'ve ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled拥抱 their babies.Yes, that\'s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.Dian Foey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda(卢旺达) to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timele reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren\'t natural anymore.Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal.Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica.Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dre to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources.

Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world\'s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment. Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from

housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their

neighborhood. Why? Because they care.Because they still want their Mother Nature back.Because they know it still belongs to them. This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it\'s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else.a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of gra where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it\'s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Dian Foey be- cause it\'s with her spirit, paion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there\'s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.Thank you very much.94

Good morning/afternoon, ladies and gentlemen: The Restriction to Creativity Is My Top Concern Have you ever wondered how many plastic bags our nation uses a day? Would you believe it if I said that total could fill an entire three-story building? Yes, sadly that’s right. In China, more than 20 billion plastic bags are consumed everyday, making our country’s plastic pollution unbearable.Nowadays, plastics have been considered as the worst invention the 20th century while back in the 1890s it was regarded as a groundbreaking creation. From the case of plastic bags, we can see that creativity should be guided, cultivated and well adapted. From steam engines to space ships, from abacus to computers, each major invention brought human beings into a new era, providing us with comforts and fortune. But when pulled away from the spotlight, we can realize that creativity has also brought us into the shadows of environmental pollution, nuclear wars, and unethical scientific experiments.Shouldn’t industrial creativity be restricted to save the Amazon forests? Shouldn’t military creativity be constrained to avoid nuclear Genocide? And would it be better if scientific creativity were supervised to save us the trouble figuring out whether a cloned human should call its genetic provider daddy or what? In the mean time, the power to dream also has a major impact on social ethos. There’s no denying that anti-racism, human rights and what gave me the chance to stand here today—women’s liberation have engaged us into a more civilized world. However, that does not mean social ideas do not have the power to produce alarming effects.During the WWII racial ideology resulted in the maacre of 6 million Jews and in China, our population policies before the 1980s gave us more than 500 million people in just 30 years, putting heavy burden on both the environment and economy. From all these examples above, we can conclude that what creativity can offer us should be a concern. So, today when everyone is streing the importance of bringing creativity into our lives, I stre on putting restriction on creativity.Because with no restriction, there’s no order! Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, let us have a little restriction to creativity and it will benefit us and the generations to come!

More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the competition helps boost public speaking in China, a skill hitherto undervalued.

For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience.Habitually shy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such activities.Encouraged by my friends, however, I made a last-minute decision to give it a try.In the course of preparation I somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.

I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is eential to succe in every walk of life.

At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.

Yet there should not be any lo or addition or distortion in the proce. Those ideas that finally find their waysintosanother head need to be recognizably yours.Language is a means

to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating.

In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingne to truly share your views?

Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progrees to another.

Only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on.Pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: Is your language competent enough to expre your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?

I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for my \"appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response\".In so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.

Some contestants failed to addre their questions head on.Some were able to, but did not knowswheresto stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. The root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions.Or they were thinking of what they had prepared.

As I said in my speech, \"It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ...to take them [iues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way\".We need to respond honestly.

A competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public speaking.Since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. And this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.

And the following is the final version of my speech:

GLOBALIZATION:

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

FOR CHINA\'S YOUNGER GENERATION

Thirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an epoch-making visit to China, a country still isolated at that time.Premier Zhou Enlai said to him, \"Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication\".Thirty years since, China and America have exchanged many handshakes. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need to communicate acro differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.

As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to addre the iue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonethele cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discu the iue of combating terrorism.Peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world.Underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of E.M.Forster\'s words \"Only connect!\"

With the IT revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshedsintosone large melting pot of humanity. In

this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

China is now actively integratingsintosthe world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From a precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership, we have come a long way.

But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations\' wealth in debts and interest.Globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation\'s economic health.

We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality.Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthle expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businees.

For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how to define greatne in our rise as a peace-loving nation? Globalization entails questions that concern us all.

Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our

mind to bigger iues. There might never be easy answers to those iues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. This is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story.

There was once a physical 1) therapist(临床医学家) who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census(调查) about

mountain 3) gorillas(大猩猩).These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching(偷猎) and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witneed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we\'ve ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled(拥抱) their babies。

Yes, that\'s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.Dian Foey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timele(永恒的) reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has

turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren\'t natural anymore.Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal.Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica.Tribal people are

forsaking their native music and dre to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.

All these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources.

Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world\'s

attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection

organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from

ecological damage in their neighborhood.

And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it\'s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.

Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Dian Foey be- cause it\'s with her spirit, paion, courage and strong sense of our

ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.

And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there\'s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

Proceed „Shuang chuang‟ for a better city! Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen I grew up in Hainan Haikou, a beautiful city which has a wonderful natural landscape and mysterious local culture.I love Haikou because of thecalmweather, picturesque sunsetsand relaxing lifestyle.Thesegreatfeatures of Haikou are worthy of praiseand should be preserved.Howeverover the past decade, Haikou hasfacedincreasing preure frompollution and traffic congestion. With these inevitable threats our localgovernmentstrugglesto keep a heathy balance between our city development and living environment. So, as a part of society, how can we contribute to the city for the better? Let me ask you a question; have you ever seen garbage on the street? Think about a young foreign girl who might visitHaikou city for the first time and seetrashin Ever-greenPark, how wouldshe feel? She would probably say, “What a beautiful park but it is ruined by rubbish everywhere! Is this how the Hainanese people always treat their city? Not very civilized, my hometown is much better than here.” As a result, that girl might never come back andmay even tell her friends of our dirty parks.Ladies and Gentlemen, our government has introduced the„Shuangchuang‟ policy and exerted so much effort to keep our city in better order. We should behave ourselves and take some responsibility as good citizens. We can prove to the world that we all can do this! Let me ask you another question; “Have you seen a clean river and a wild flower? Have you heard the voice of the songbirds? My parents said yes…in their youth, they used to bathe in the river, sing with the birds and lay down on the flower bed appreciating the wonderful nature. But thatall has gone now.The young generation haven‟t seen a bright sky and transparent river so they tend to dream about the outside world and forgot about their own places. My dear friends, ourbeautiful city needs to be built and kept withour own hands.Let us fill our hearts with kindne and good intentions.Let us save our natural resources; let us plant more trees to make our city greener; Let us all believe that one day Haikou willbe a unique and impreive place forourforeignersto stay! Our city still has a long way to go as it faces many economic and political challenges. However if my speech touches every soul here tonight, I believe it shall go forth beyond this competition and be a great succe.Ladies and Gentlemen, believe me, together we canrebuild our city.Together we canmake it a more comfortable place to live.Together we cangive our future generation a city to be proud of.Sing: What we should do in Shuangchuang, everybody should know by heart.Building national civilized city, making healthy place for life.Said official, we should‟be all in, joint forces by heart. For our city better and prettier, we should work harder to make it come ture.Thank you.

Challenges and Opportunities for Students

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. At present, my fellow students and I have before us great personal and educational opportunities. At the same time, we are running into a variety of challenges.

Today\'s college education provides us with opportunities for bringing out the creativity and talent that we have within us.This is nurtured both by our learned profeors, and by the growing dimension of knowledge sources, such as the World Wide Web and multimedia sources. Our educational experience is being transformed both within and beyond the traditional claroom. However, challenges still exist.

At the end of every semester, students in my university are required to fill out a questionnaire as a review of the previous semester. The questions usually cover a broad range of college life, from curriculum adjustment to canteen service. And almost every time, the questionnaire includes one eential question, that is: As a college student, what are your major challenges? And almost every answer includes two aspects: studying and profeional. These two challenges will remain our preoccupations as long as we live in such a competitive world.

A series of challenges in our studies start from almost the beginning of our freshman year.We may wonder whether we\'ve chosen the right major. We may wonder if the extracurricular activities add credits to our studies. We may work our heads off to get a glorious A, because B is already mediocre and C is almost unacceptable.Later on we may be competing with our hardworking, intelligent peers, including our best friends to get into an ideal graduate school. All of these sound so familiar and they have somehow made our college education so goal-obseed that we sometimes fail to fully enjoy our educational experience.

Apart from challenges in learning, there are also profeional challenges. The competitive world today has also brought about the \"Knowledge Economy,\" which requires the effective use of knowledge for economic and social development, and also requires skilled and multi-oriented students with a marketable vocational sense. Therefore, sophisticated calculations upon the value of a university degree are

being made.Graduate employability statistics are being scrutinized.Programs like resume writing and interview skills are seen as a must.Again as I\'ve said above, when profeional concern dominates our college education, we may lose the eence of our educational experience.

Indeed, facing these two challenges, how can students manage to be what the employers seek and at the same time to enjoy a valuable, insightful and rewarding educational experience?

For me, the solution to the problem lies in what can be called an \"Educational Synthesis\".I remember attending a lecture by Profeor Tu Weiming, director of Harvard Yenching Institute. In his lecture, Profeor Tu argued that the ideal state of college education is to arrive at a synthesis, a combination of specific knowledge, humanistic insight and sense of social responsibility.

Admittedly, there is much to do to bridge the gap between our educational experience in college and the social employment in society.\"Educational synthesis\" can help us narrow the gap.Fortunately, today\'s college education provides us with such a diverse world. From this diverse world we may choose what we want to form our own educational synthesis.

Ladies and gentlemen, as Charles Dickens once commented upon the time of the French Revolution, \"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.\" And I\'m afraid so it is with our time.

I believe, once we achieve our own educational synthesis, we will be able to transform our challenges into opportunities. We will be able to see the best time of our life. And more importantly, we will be able to see the best time of our nation.Thank you.

Our Future: A Battle between Dreams and Reality

When I was in the primary school, I have a dream.I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate.

How pathetic! When we grow up, we dream le and become more realistic. Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be \"fulfilled\"? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called \"reality\"? What IS the reality actually?

Ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real.It is a barrier keeping us from all the poible fantasies.Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years.A hundred years ago, \"man could not fly\" was still regarded as the \"reality\".Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macau? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.

People say that our future is a battle between the reality and our dreams. And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality; People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality; 4)Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance IS the reality.

Ladies and gentlemen, how many of you have a dream of being able to make a lot of money? Please raise your hands.Oh, quite a number of you! Actually, ladies and gentlemen, this is not a dream, but a task.Every one of us has to make a living, right? Anyway I hope your task will be accomplished. How many of you think that you have already fulfilled your dream and that you don\'t dream anymore? Dear 5)adjudicators, what do you think? C.S.Lewis once said, \"You are never too old to dream a new dream.\" So for our future, please dream and be unrealistic.

Now that I am a university student, my goal is to graduate with excellences. But at the same time, I have a dream deeply rooted in our future. One day, people living in the areas now 6)sweltering with the horror of wars will be able to sit with their families and enjoy their every moment. One day, people from the rich countries are willing to share what they have with those from the poor countries and those from the poor countries will eventually be able to make their own happy living themselves. One day, different cultures in this age of globalization will coexist with tolerance and the unfriendly confrontations among them will be 7)eliminated.One day, the globe will share the dream with me and we will all contribute to making our dream come true. One day, our dream will defeat the reality! Thank you very much. Thank you.

Thank you.

问题:Now in the age of the Internet, reading books does not seem as important as it once was.Do you think people can learn as much on the Internet as they can by reading books? Which method do you prefer? 回答:Thank you very much. And hello again ladies and gentlemen.Actually, I don\'t really agree with the first sentence of this topic: “In the age of the Internet, reading books does not seem as important as it was once.\" Why? Why is it the case? Why is it the situation, ladies and gentlemen? Actually, Internet or books are just like tea or coffee. They are similar, but they are different.University students nowadays love to use the Internet to search for information when they are working with their eays.Like, last semester, when I was working with my physics eay, I logged into Google and I searched for \"NEWTON\" and all the laws and theories of Newton just popped out and I can choose whichever one I like to use.But when I walked into the library, all the books came out and I have to choose which one to read. How inconvenient! Maybe you can say at this moment,\" Oh, Internet is better, books no use.\" So I have to use Internet, right? But let\'s see the things in another way.I love traveling a lot and I love to bring a book with me.And I love to read my Da Vinci Code when I was having my trip on a bus or on a ship.Actually, whenever it is, wherever you go, whatever you are doing, you can take out a book and read if you feel like doing so.Now who will bother to take a laptop and switch it on, and search for the Internet connection, and look for stories to read? How inconvenient! So at this very moment I think it\'s quite dangerous for me, because I think I\'m unable to answer the question in the topic\" Which method do you prefer, Internet or books?\" because I love the feeling of conjuring a hundred pages of Harry Potter, more than scrolling down the screen; but at the same time I love the feeling of searching the things, the speed of my searching for things on the Internet, more than wasting my time in the library. So in this age of Internet, in this age of modernization, in this age of civilization, why do you have to force someone to choose between internet and books? I prefer using both of them.Thank you very much.

问题:Contestant No.13.Thank you very much for encouraging us to be unrealistic dreamers(Thank you) and not surrender to Mr.Reality.(hehe..) With the traffic jam getting worse--especially in big cities--I\'m actually very interested in your childhood dream: To invent a device that can move people around easily. Is this still your dream? If not, why do you give it up? Is it because it is considered unrealistic? Thank you.回答:Thank you very much. This is not my dream now.Not because it is (not), realistic.Maybe you can say it\'s unrealistic. But if I, my interest is still inventing this device, I will keep on trying my best to invent this device. My changing of my dreams is because of the fact that I realized my interest does not lie in science. Now I am a law school student. But last semester, as I\'ve just mentioned, I was working on my physics eay paper and actually last semester I was a student in the school of aerospace.Oh my god, aerospace! And I\'ve changed my major to law school. And so the changing of my dream is actually because of the fact that I realize my interest lies in, maybe communicating with others, or having interactions with the others.Science is very fantastic, but it\'s not my piece of cake.Yes, so that\'s the reason.Thank you very much.

问题:Thank you very much for your speeches.Talking about Internet, I just want to know your view.Do you believe everything is true on the Internet? If not, why not?

回答:Thank you very much.I don\'t believe everything is true in the Internet. This is a straight forward answer. And if not, why not? Because I don\'t believe them. And I have an experience of meeting someone on the Internet who claims to be a girl.Yes and, a very sad, sorry story for me.But yes, for this reason, I think I don\'t believe that everything on the Internet is true. But I will try my best to discover if that was true or not, or that was falsified or not.Thank you very much.

问题:Contestant No.13.Thank you very much for your speeches. You were talking about dreams being realistic or unrealistic and your current dream is to graduate from law school. But what is your realistic or unrealistic dream after that? What do you want to use your graduation in law for? 回答:Thank you very much.Actually, my dream, as mentioned in the last part of my speech, is to share my feelings, share my dreams with the globe. And when all the people in this Earth have my dream, they will work hard for the social betterment, I believe in that.So after I\'ve graduated from law school, I think I will try my best to persuade the others to, to accept my dream, and that is exactly why I am here.I am here trying to persuade you all, I think you all, after listening to my speech, hopefully, you can try to understand my dream and that we are all a member of the global village, and we have to try our best to work hard for the social betterment of all. This is why I want to be, saying, speaking something here, and that is my goal--or realistic or unrealistic dream after I\'ve graduated.I think I will try my best to du what I\'ve said before.Thank you very much

Our Future: A Battle between Dreams and Reality

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality; People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality; 4) Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance IS the reality.

Dear 5) adjudicators, what do you think? C.S.Lewis once said, \"You are never too old to dream a new dream.\" So for our future, please dream and be unrealistic.

Now that I am a university student, my goal is to graduate with excellences. But at the same time, I have a dream deeply rooted in our future. One day, people living in the areas now 6) sweltering with the horror of wars will be able to sit with their families and enjoy their every moment. One day, people from the rich countries are willing to share what they have with those from the poor countries and those from the poor countries will eventually be able to make their own happy living themselves. One day, different cultures in this age of globalization will coexist with tolerance and the unfriendly confrontations among them will be 7) eliminated. One day, the globe will share the dream with me and we will all contribute to making our dream come true. One day, our dream will defeat the reality! Thank you very much.

From Walls to Bridges

I\'m studying in a city famous for its walls. All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines. With old, cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beaten guards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city.

Our ancestors liked to build walls. They built walls in Beijing, Xi\'an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes through half of our country. They built walls to ward off enemies and evil spirits. This tradition has been maintained to this day as we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.I grew up at the foot of the city walls, and I\'ve loved them since my childhood. For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world.

My perception, however, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a scenic area of my city.My clamates and I were walking with some international students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees, which formed a huge canopy above our heads.Suddenly an international student asked me, \"Where is the entrance to the Eastern Suburbs?\"

\"We\'re already in the Eastern Suburbs,\" I replied.

He seemed taken aback, \"I thought you Chinese have walls for everything.\" His remark set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to \"jails,\" while I insisted that the Eastern Suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls.

That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student. For instance, he told me that universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls; the campuses were just part of the cities.I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede China\'s development.

Let me give you an example.A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on busine law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying, \"You can\'t borrow this book, you are not a student here.\" In the end, I had to spend 200 Yuan buying a copy; meanwhile, the copy in law school was gathering dust on the shelf.

At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university has started not only to unify its libraries but also link them up with libraries of other universities, so my experience will not be repeated.Barriers will be replaced by bridges.Through an inter-library loan system, we will have acce to books from any library. With globalization, with China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.

I know globalization is a controversial iue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad.But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China\'s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their roles in the modern world.

And how about the ancient walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite. My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. These walls attract not only historians and archeologists but also many schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage.Walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great change in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

The Doors that are Open to Us

Good morning ladies and gentlemen:

The title of my speech today is \"The Doors that Are Open to Us \".

The other day my aunt paid me a visit. She was overjoyed.\"I got the highest mark in the mid-term examination!\" she said.Don\'t be surprised! My aunt is indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45.

Last year, she put aside her private busine and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college.\"This was the wisest decision I have ever made,\" she said proudly like a teenage girl.To her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

\"Compared with the late 70s,\" she says, \"now college students have many doors.\" My aunt cannot help but recall her first college experience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the Cultural Revolution. She was aigned to study engineering despite her desire to study Chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a TV factory.

I was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job.Look at us today! So many doors are open to us! I believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. And my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities.

The first door I see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us.My aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient Chinese poetry and on Shakespearean drama. As for myself, I am English major, but I may also go to lectures on history. To me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-rounded development of each individual. So all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us.

The second door is the door to the outside world.Learning goes beyond clarooms and national boundaries. My aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation \"frogs in a well.\" But today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other.I have many fellow international clamates, and I am applying to an exchange program with a university abroad. As for my aunt, she is planning to get an MBA degree in the United Kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master\'s degree in biochemistry. We are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we\'ll put to use what we have learnt abroad.

The third door is the door to lifelong learning. As new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardle of our age.Naturally, my aunt herself is the best example. Many of my aunt\'s contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. She simply responds, \"Age doesn\'t matter. What matters is your attitude. You may think it\'s strange that I am still going to college, but I don\'t think I\'m too old to learn.\" Yes, she is right.Since the government removed the age limit for college admiions in 2001, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same clarooms.Like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit. With her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity.

The doors open to us also pose challenges. For instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of preserving our fine tradition while learning from the West, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. So, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, I believe I can meet the challenge head on.When I reach my aunt\'s age, I can be proud to say that I have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more.Poibly I will go back to college, too.

Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

A Scene to Remember

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story.

There was once a physical 1) therapist(临床医学家) who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census(调查) about mountain 3) gorillas(大猩猩).These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching(偷猎) and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures.

All these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources.Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world\'s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood.

And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it\'s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.

Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Dian Foey be- cause it\'s with her spirit, paion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.

And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there\'s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

Thank you very much.

I have spent my entire life either at the schoolhouse, on the way to the schoolhouse, or talking about what happens in the schoolhouse. Both my parents were educators, my maternal grandparents were educators, and for the past 40 years I\'ve done the same thing. And so, needle to say, over those years I\'ve had a chance to look at education reform from a lot of perspectives. Some of those reforms have been good. Some of them have been not so good. And we know why kids drop out.We know why kids don\'t learn.It\'s either poverty, low attendance, negative peer influences. We know why.But one of the things that we never discu or we rarely discu is the value and importance of human connection, relationships.

James Comer says that no significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.George Washington Carver says all learning is understanding relationships.Everyone in this room has been affected by a teacher or an adult.

For years, I have watched people teach.I have looked at the best and I\'ve look at some of the worst.

A colleague said to me one time, \"They don\'t pay me to like the kids. They pay me to teach a leon. The kids should learn it.I should teach it.They should learn it.Case closed.\"

Well, I said to her, \"You know, kids don\'t learn from people they don\'t like.\" 然后,我就跟她说, “你知道,孩子们可不跟他们讨厌的人学习。”

She said, \"That\'s just a bunch of hooey.\"

And I said to her, \"Well, your year is going to be long and arduous, dear.\"

Needle to say it was. Some people think that you can either have it in you to build a relationship or you don\'t.I think Stephen Covey had the right idea.He

said you ought to just throw in a few simple things, like seeking first to understand as opposed to being understood, simple things like apologizing. You ever thought about that? Tell a kid you\'re sorry, they\'re in shock. 我认为Stephen Covey(美国教育家)是对的。

I taught a leon once on ratios.I\'m not real good with math, but I was working on it.And I got back and looked at that teacher edition.I\'d taught the whole leon wrong.(Laughter)

So I came back to cla the next day, and I said, \"Look, guys, I need to apologize.I taught the whole leon wrong.I\'m so sorry.\"

They said, \"That\'s okay, Ms.Pierson.You were so excited, we just let you go.\" (Laughter) (Applause)

I have had claes that were so low, so academically deficient that I cried.I wondered, how am I going to take this group in nine months from where they

are to where they need to be? And it was difficult. It was awfully hard. How do I raise the self-esteem of a child and his academic achievement at the same time?

One year I came up with a bright idea.I told all my students, \"You were chosen to be in my cla because I am the best teacher and you are the best students, they put us all together so we could show everybody else how to do it.\" 有一年我有了一个非常好的主意。

One of the students said, \"Really?\" (Laughter)

I said, \"Really.We have to show the other claes how to do it, so when we walk down the hall, people will notice us, so you can\'t make noise. You just have to strut.\" And I gave them a saying to say: \"I am somebody.I was somebody when I came.I\'ll be a better somebody when I leave.I am powerful, and I am strong.I deserve the education that I get here.I have things to do, people to impre, and places to go.\"

And they said, \"Yeah!\"

You say it long enough, it starts to be a part of you.

And so — (Applause) I gave a quiz, 20 questions.A student mied 18.I put a \"+2\" on his paper and a big smiley face.

He said, \"Ms.Pierson, is this an F?\" 他说,“Pierson老师,这是不及格吗?”

I said, \"Yes.\"

He said, \"Then why\'d you put a smiley face?\"

I said, \"Because you\'re on a roll.You got two right.You didn\'t mi them all.\" I said, \"And when we review this, won\'t you do better?\"

He said, \"Yes, ma\'am, I can do better.\"

You see, \"-18\" sucks all the life out of you.\"+2\" said, \"I ain\'t all bad.\" (Laughter) (Applause)

(笑声)(掌声) For years I watched my mother take the time at rece to review, go on home visits in the afternoon, buy combs and brushes and peanut butter and crackers to put in her desk drawer for kids that needed to eat, and a washcloth and some soap for the kids who didn\'t smell so good.See, it\'s hard to teach kids who stink. And kids can be cruel. And so she kept those things in her desk, and years later, after she retired, I watched some of those same kids come through and say to her, \"You know, Ms.Walker, you made a difference in my life. You made it work for me.You made me feel like I was somebody, when I knew, at the bottom, I wasn\'t.And I want you to just see what I\'ve become.\" 好多年了,我看着我妈妈利用课间休息时间批改作业,下午去家访,买梳子、刷子、花生酱和饼干,把他们放在自己的抽屉里给那些饿了的孩子们吃,还有为那些脏孩子们准备了一条毛巾和一些肥皂。

And when my mama died two years ago at 92, there were so many former students at her funeral, it brought tears to my eyes, not because she was gone, but because she left a legacy of relationships that could never disappear.

Can we stand to have more relationships? Absolutely. Will you like all your children? Of course not.And you know your toughest kids are never absent.(Laughter) Never. You won\'t like them all, and the tough ones show up for a reason.It\'s the connection.It\'s the relationships. And while you won\'t like them all, the key is, they can never, ever know it.So teachers become great actors and great actrees, and we come to work when we don\'t feel like it, and we\'re listening to policy that doesn\'t make sense, and we teach anyway. We teach anyway, because that\'s what we do.

Teaching and learning should bring joy.How powerful would our world be if we had kids who were not afraid to take risks, who were not afraid to think, and who had a champion? Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will

never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can poibly be.

Is this job tough? You bet.Oh God, you bet.But it is not impoible. We can do this.We\'re educators.We\'re born to make a difference.

Thank you so much.
