P4 5 The tendency to ignore the Negro\'s contribution to American life and to strip him of his personhood, is as old as the earliest history hooks and as contemporary as the morning\'s newspaper. To upset this cultural homicide, the Negro must rise up with an affirmation of his own Olympian manhood.Any movement for the Negro\'s freedom that overlooks this neceity is only waiting to be buried. As long as the mind is enslaved, the body can never be free.Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery. No Lincolnian Emancipation Proclamation or Johnsonian Civil Rights Bill can totally bring this kind of freedom. The Negro will only be free when he reaches down to the inner depths of his own being and signs with the pen and ink of aertive manhood his own Emancipation Proclamation. And, with a spirit straining toward true self-esteem, the Negro must boldly throw off the manacles of self-abnegation and say to himself and to the world, \"I am somebody.I am a person.I am a man with dignity and honor.I have a rich and noble history. How painful and exploited that history has been.Yes, I was a slave through my foreparents and I am not ashamed of that.I\'m ashamed of the people who were so sinful to make me a slave.\" Yes, we must stand up and say, \"I\'m black and I\'m beautiful,\" and this self-affirmation is the black man\'s need, made compelling by the white man\'s crimes against him.

P5 8 It was this misinterpretation that caused Nietzsche, who was a philosopher of the will to power, to reject the Christian concept of love.It was this same misinterpretation which induced Christian theologians to reject the Nietzschean philosophy of the will to power in the name of the Christian idea of love. Now, we\'ve got to get this thing right. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckle and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love. And this is what we must see as we move on.What has happened is that we have had it wrong and confused in our own country, and this has led Negro Americans in the past to seek their goals through power devoid of love and conscience.

P7 19 And so I say to you today that I still stand by nonviolence. And I am still convinced that it is the most potent weapon available to the Negro in his struggle for justice in this country. And the other thing is that I am concerned about a better world.I\'m concerned about justice.I\'m concerned about brotherhood.I\'m concerned about truth. And when one is concerned about these, he can never advocate violence. For through violence you may murder a murderer but you can\'t murder.Through violence you may murder a liar but you can\'t establish truth.Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can\'t murder hate.Darkne cannot put out darkne.Only light can do that.

P55 3 What could be easier than to write articles and to buy Persian cats with; the profits? But wait a moment.Articles have to be about something.Mine, I seem to remember, was about a novel by a famous man.And while I was writing this review, I discovered that if I were going to review books I

should need to do battle with a certain phantom. And the phantom was a woman, and when I came to know her better I called her after the heroine of a famous poem. The Angel in the House. It was she who used to come between me and my paper when I was writing reviews. It was she who bothered me and wasted my time and so tormented me that at last I killed her.You who come of a younger and happier generation may not have heard of her-you may not know what I mean by The Angel in the House.I will describe her as shortly as I can.She was intensely sympathetic. She was immensely charming. She was utterly unselfish. She excelled in the difficult arts of family life. She sacrificed herself daily. If there was chicken, she took the leg; if there was a draught she sat in it-in short she was so consitituted that she never had a mind or a wish of her own, but preferred to sympathize always with the minds and wishes of others.Above all-I need not say it-she was pure. Her purity was supposed to be her chief beauty-her blushes, her great grace. In those days-the last of Queen Victoria-every house had its Angel. And when I came to write I encountered her with the very first words. The shadow of her wings fell on my page; I heard the rustling of her skirts in the room.Directly, that is to say, I took my pen in my hand to review that novel by a famous man, she slipped behind me and whispered: \"My dear, you are a young woman. You are writing about a book that has been written by a man.Be sympathetic; be tender; flatter; deceive; use all the arts and wiles of our sex.Never let anybody gue that you have a mind of your own.Above all, be pure.\" And she made as if to guide my pen.I now record the one act for which I take some credit to myself, though the credit rightly belongs to some excellent ancestors of mine who left me a certain sum of money-shall we say five hundred pounds a year?-so that it was not neceary for me to depend solely on charm for my living.I turned upon her and caught her by the throat.I did my best to kill her.My excuse if I were to be had up at a court of law, would be that I acted in self-defence.Had I not killed her she would have killed me.She would have plucked the heart out of my writing. For as I found directly I put pen to paper, you cannot review even a novel without having a mind of your own, without expreing what you think to be the truth about human relations, morality, sex.And all these questions, according to the Angel of the House cannot be dealt with freely and openly by women; they must charm, they must conciliate, they must-to put it bluntly-tell lies if they are to succeed. Thus, whenever I felt the shadow of her wing or the radiance of her halo upon my page, I took up the inkpot and flung it at her.She died hard. Her fictitious nature was of great aistance to her.It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality. She was always creeping back when I thought I had despatched her.Though I flatter myself that I killed her in the end, the struggle was severe; it took much time that had better have been spent upon learning Greek grammar; or in roaming the world in search of adventures. But it was a real experience; it was an experience that was bound to befall all women writers at that time.Killing the Angel in the House was part of the occupation of a woman writer.

It is in Chinese tradition that the university is the cradle of talents.People attach much importance to education in university, believing university can transform an ordinary child into a superior adult. As a senior, I have kept

wondering” what should I learn in university” since the very day I entered my university. Now, I think it’s time to answer” what have I learned from my years at university”.Whether the four-year academic life is worthwhile depends on how we spend our university life.

There’s no denying that university life is colorful and wonderful. For a student far away from hometown, university teaches me how to adapt myself quickly to the totally strange environment and how to be independent and strong-willed without parents’ protection.University life strengthens my adaptability and independence, which I think is of great use for my future life.

To me, university is just like a take-off pad for a better life. Our campus is an academic gathering where we can pursue knowledge and cultivate our own personality. Our cla is much more student-oriented.When at cla, we can expre different ideas and our teachers listen to our opinions carefully.Teachers pay much attention to instruct us to think independently and

creatively. They teach us how to deal with problems from multi-perspective.We learn how to develop our unconventional thinking and how to study

scientifically.“The years teach much which the days never know”, by this way, we master a lot of major knowledge by the end of our university life.

A great person once said “knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it”, which means we should combine what we learned with practice.I think the beat way is to take a major-related part-time job.I have taken jobs as tutors, salesman and so on, which not only help me improve my academic students but also offer me much experience that I will never get from textbooks. At the mean time, I take part in various kinds of activities held in our university and therefore make some new friends.I learn how to make a good scheme for certain activities, how to harmonize well with the others and how to contribute my own strength to the whole team. When university turns a shy girl who could even flush when speaking to others to a talkative one, it’s really amazing.I learn how to build a healthy interpersonal relation, which will help a lot in my future career no matter what job I take.

My university life offers me a great chance to know myself better and to know the whole society better.I come to university not for fame, not for money, but for knowledge, and it does give me knowledge.Along with it is adaptability, creative thinking, social responsibility and creative ability.

A university campus, composed of adults from many different backgrounds, is indeed an extension of the real world. What I have learned in it is not only

academic knowledge but also survival skills.I owe much to my university life, which has really changed me a lot.

The development of an individual human existence can be divided into several important stages. But no period can be more influential upon the later course of our life than the years we have experienced in college. Here is the cradle of intelligentsia with vision, miion and paion. And now, as I am ready to leave campus and face the real world, I dare say that no other place can teach me more.

I am very proud that in university I have learnt how important it is for one to have vision, that ability to see ahead of time and poibly others.College has raised me up, so that I could enjoy a broader view of the world.University Library, the sanctuary of mind always keeps me in a close touch with the great thoughts of giants, Shakespeare, Ruell, Churchill, Roosevelt, to name only a few.All these overwhelmingly famous names have turned familiar and friendly here. These great minds teach me how to live a meaningful life. They warn me that the last but greatest enemy for mankind is human existence itself.Their words of wisdom shall guide and guard me to overcome all the obstacles beset in the course of my life.In the light of this statement, I have to say that college years have brightened up my vision.

It is at university that I have acquired an added understanding of the meaning of miion i.e.man should have shoulders strong enough to take more responsibilities of the time.College has enriched me, so that I, to some extent, have discovered the truth to live by.When I was a sophomore, I was chosen a volunteer for the Red Cro Institution. My job, then, was to aist the doctor with the blood collecting in a blood donation car on the street. Those days bestowed me with a moving but a little bit singular picture, in which the painful injection and hearty smile are perfectly and beautifully combined.Every parcel of blood means a piece of hope, through which I see that the poeion of life lies in sharing. This is how college years has defined my miion.

It is after some years at university that I have better apprehended Tonybee when he said, “Glory belongs to those who are actually in the arena,

fighting paionately whilst showing every now and then mistakes or shortcomings.” I have understood the spirit of transcending myself, sometimes even in a crazy way.If youth is the freshne of the deep springs of life, then college must be the fountain of paion. It cheers in the chaos of gym; it hides in the silence of lab.During the college years, I never stopped pursuing my own dream, because I never fail to be inspired by the flowing current of young paion.

Lawrence H.Summers, former President of Harvard said in his farewell speech, “College graduates, capable of deep reflections are what the world needs.” Living in a world of madding crowd, a group, or even a small group of people are expected to remain transcendental and sober. If any can live up to so high a standard of existence, college graduates can.And I am fortunate in being among them at this moment and having spared little time cultivating my vision, miion and paion in the past four years. With these, I have better courage to change myself and most probably better preparation for my future. How time flies! In a wink I am on the threshold of graduation. It’s a good time to look back to my four years’ campus life, and to have a reflection on my most precious years in my whole life.During the four years, there are sorrows and happine, ups and downs, and it is full of color and achievements.I gain a lot, psychologically and physically. To begin with, study at university equips me with knowledge. Most people firmly believe that university is the ivory tower where we enrich

knowledge, improve our observations and learn methods. It is well known that it is an ideal place for learning, because there are numerous excellent profeors and experts both academically and practically. In addition, reading and study shape my inclination and aociating with different people makes me grow mature.

Besides, I learn that love alone can awake love.In the years of study, our dear profeors have set god examples for us, their responsibility, their carefulne and their detailed preparation of cla, all of these rolled into one thing: that is their deep love to the course and us pupils.Illne or bad weathers can never easily wither their paion and

enthusiasm. From them I for the first time have a clear understanding of our parents’ life and their greatne. This make me think a lot about the meaning of life, and it lets me know that it is contribution not demanding that values.

What’s more, I learn from our clamates to be considerate and thoughtful. They never let any details of other students’ unhappine and troubles slip from their fingers. When you are in a tight corner, they will give you a hand help you out, which gives you warmne and happine. It is

in college that I know the sense of true friendship. It is a place where I learn how to deal and share with my friends; a place where I learn to be more grateful for my parents’ hardworking.I tried my best to be nice to my friends and tried to know more about them.It is evident that if you want to be treated nicely by others, try to be nice to others first.

A pure friendship is precious; friends can share happine and sadne with each other with true heart.Life is full of ups and downs, in my later life, I will help those who are in great need to avoid some pitfalls and give a hand to people in plight on the road of life.

In a word, campus life offers us greatly. The campus years are considered as one of the most important period in our lives which will significantly set out future. It matures our thoughts and broadens our horizon, and it lets me know what are valuable to our life.

A Tale of Two Cities

I bought the‘A Tale of Two Cities’ last summer holiday and then I just put it into my book collections and never tried to read it for the whole semester.

Recently, I finished reading it--- \"A Tale of Two Cities\" roughly. It is one of Dickens\'s most important representative works, but a tragic one, I think.Lost in the story, I felt like being together with the characters and the same exciting events. The story is set both in London and Paris at the time of the great French Revolution. It shows the causes of revolution and its effects on people\'s day-to-day life so impreively. The love story between Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette and their suffering experience is the tiny mirror that shows the real life of common people in France.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishne, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkne, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative

degree of comparison only.”— A Tale of Two Cities , Dickens. We can easily admit that the writing talent of Dickens from this paragraph.

The story begins like the above paragraph, and tells the chaotic setting. It augurs something uncommon is to happen.I appreciate this beginning very much. The beauty of language is expreed so succefully. The first time I read it, it arouses my interest at once.I really want to know what’s going on next.So it did not take me much time to read it over.

Yes, it was the best of times and it was the worst of times, but for different people. For the King and aristocrats, they had a good time by taxing and ruling the people heavily and cruelly. As for the poor people, they had a miserable time.Even the land could not bare it and produced no good crops and thus people had nothing to hand over. What’s eviler was the aristocracy made their will as the law by using money and the power they have. There were no justice, no equality and no fairne, just like the following plot.

It wrote in a period of darkne that a kind-hearted doctor was arrested and sent to the notorious prison Bastille because he delated the aristocrats, the Marquis St.Evremonde brothers for they killing a whole family only for an instant pleasure. How indifferent they are! Not until the revolution broke out and Bastille was captured that Dr.Manette was release. Then with broken heart, he and his daughter moved to England and got to know Charles Darnay there, with whom Lucie felt deeply in love. And Sydney

Carton, a young man who adored Lucie very much, was ready to die for her anywhere anytime.Eventually, he took Charles’s place to be arrested and died for love.It seemed kind of tragic.

Although the King and many other aristocrats were sent to death, the situation had not been changed to much better.Because people at that time were out of their minds and they wanted to take revenge as much as poible.Once they belonged to the lowest cla and suffered a lot.As the revolution happened, they’ve been changed into people that were full of evil in their hearts.I gue it is the hatred that ruled over their minds. So at the same time the prisoners were set free from Bastille, even more people were put into it, even though they did nothing guilty.

At last, for the reason Charles was the son of the marquis, Charles was arrested. But Sydney Carton, a selfle man who wanted to do good for the couple, disguised as Charles and died for him. What a noble man he was! Although he died at last, he lasted forever in my heart.

The novel has portrayed many different people.Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution actually.Lucie is beautiful and gentle.Charles is graceful and noble.Lorry is upright and honest.Sydney is semblance of indifferent, innermost feelings of warm.He is unconventional but also selfle and lofty.Mi Pro is straightforward and loyal.Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister……The complex hatred is hard to solve, the cruel revenge has made more hatreds, loves

rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price.

All I saw there were two people died, having a tragic ending.

Mi Pro was one of those women who thought nothing of their own needs and who, through pure love and admiration, are ready to make themselves slaves to youth when they have lost it, to beauty which they have never had, and to bright hopes that have never shone upon their own dark lives. As Mr.Lorry said, \"there is nothing better in the world than the honest service of the heart\".Since Mi Pro had become like a mother to Lucie and would have given her life for her, she would do everything she could to keep Madame Defarge in the house so that the carriage carrying Lucie could run farther.

Madame Defarge was a woman with a very keen eye, a strong face and a great calmne of manner. When the French Revolution broke out, it was her who led the woman and cut off the head of the governor of the prison. She had a strong, fearle and a kind of beauty that called attention to her qualities.Having grown up with a deep sense of wrong and a powerful hatred of the aristocracy, to her, Darnay\'s family must be destroyed, and the wife and child must follow the ending of the father, just like what she suffered when she was a child.

Both were determined woman in their different ways.Hatred had made the heart of the Frenchwoman harder; love now filed the Englishwoman\'s with courage.It\'s very interesting to see that each

woman spoke in her own language and neither understood a word of what the other said while each knew well the other\'s intention.

As a result of the combat, Madame Defarge died lying on ground and Mi Pro could hear nothing for the rest of her life.That\'s one tragedy in my heart.

‘I see that I hold a sanctuary in their hearts, and in the hearts of their descendants, generations hence.I see her, an old woman, weeping for me on the anniversary of this day.I see her and her husband, their course done, lying side by side in their last earthly bed, and I know that each was not more honored and held sacred in the other\'s soul, than I was in the souls of both.’

`I see that child who lay upon her bosom and who bore my name, a man winning his way up in that path of life which once was mine.I see him winning it so well, that my name is made illustrious there by the light of his.I see the blots I threw upon it, faded away.I see him, foremost of just judges and honored men, bringing a boy of my name, with a forehead that I know and golden hair, to this place--then fair to look upon, with not a trace of this day\'s disfigurement--and I hear him tell the child my story, with a tender and a faltering voice.’

`It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.\'

I was heavyhearted when reading what Sydney Carton said before he

died and I burst into tears finally. In such a background, sacrifice and blood was inevitable. However, blood could not wash away hatred, let alone took place of true love. The ending tells us to conquer evil with love.

Equality and fairne were what people seek, which led to the French Revolution. As a consequence, neither equality nor fairne got after the revolution, and that\'s another tragedy of the history.

2、The very act of stepping on this soil, in breathing this air of Hiroshima, was for me a far greater adventure than any trip or any reportorial aignment I\'d previously taken. Was I not at the scene of the crime?

3、The tall buildings of the martyred city flashed by as we lurched from side to side in response to the driver\'s sharp twists of the wheel.

4、Quite unexpectedly, the strange emotion which had overwhelmed me at the station returned, and I was again crushed by the thought that I now stood on the site of the first atomic bombardment, where thousands upon thousands of people had been slainin one second, where thousands upon thousands of others had lingered on to die in slow agony .

5、Seldom has a city gained such world renown, and I am proud and happy to welcome you to Hiroshima, a town known throughout the world for its--- oysters\".

6、There are two different schools of thought in this city of oysters, one that would like to preserve traces of the bomb, and the other that would like to get rid of everything, even the monument that was erected at the point of impact.

7、\"If you write about this city, do not forget to say that it is the gayest city in Japan, even if many of the town\'s people still bear hidden wounds, and burns.\" “假如您要描写这座城市的话,千万别忘记告诉人们这是日本最快乐的城市,尽管这里的市民许多人身上还带着暗伤和明显的灼伤。”

8、But later my hair began to fall out, and my belly turned to water.

1、The fundamentalists adhered to a literal interpretation of the Old Testament. The modernists, on the other hand, accepted the theory advanced by Charles Darwin -- that all animal life, including monkeys and men, had evolved from a common ancestor.

2、During one such argument, Rappelyea said that nobody could teach biology without teaching evolution.

3、People from the surrounding hills, mostly fundamentalists, arrived to cheer Bryan against the \" infidel outsiders\"

4、He is here because ignorance and bigotryare , and it is a mighty strong combination.\" “我也知道他为什么会被带上法庭。

5、\"The Bible,\" he thundered in his sonorous organ tones, \" is not going to be driven out of this court by experts who come hundreds of miles to testify that they can reconcile evolution, with its ancestors in the jungle, with man made by God in His image and put here for His purpose as par t of a divine plan.\" “《圣经》,”他用洪亮的嗓音大喊大叫道,“是不会被那些千里迢迢赶来作证的学者专家们赶出这个法庭的。

6、The truth does not need Mr.Bryan.The truth is eternal, immortal and needs no human agency to support it!

7、But although Malone had won the oratorical duel with Bryan, the judge ruled against permitting the scientists to testify for the defence.

8、“ I am examining you on your tool ideas that no intelligent Christian on earth believes.\" “我只是在考验你的那些愚蠢的想法,世界上没有哪个有知识的基督徒会相信你的那些想法。”

9、Dudley Field Malone called my conviction a \"victorious defeat.\"

10、The oratorial storm that Clarence Darrow and Dudley Field Malone blew up in the little court in Dayton swept like a fresh wind through the schools and legislative offices of the United States, bringing in its wake a new climate of intellectual and academic freedom that has grown with the paing years.

1、The rocks looked more like an ancient ruin than the building blocks of a new school.

2、The previous winter ,before leaving Korphe, Mortenson had driven tent pegs into the frozen soil and tied red and blue braised nylon cord to them, marking out a floor plan of five rooms he imagined for the school.

3、Korphe’s mosque had adapted to a changing environment over the centuries

4、With Motenson ,he measured out the correct length ,dipped the twine in a mixture of calcium and lime ,then used the village’s time--tested method to mark the dimensions of a construction site.

5、Haji Ali and Twaha pulled the core taut and whipped it against the ground ,leaving white lines on the packed earth where the walls of the foundation facing Korph K2.

6、When the trench was done, Haji Ali nodded toward two large stones that had been carved for this purpose, and six men lifted them, shuffled agonizingly toward the trench, and lowered them into the corner of foundation facing Korphe K2.

7、“It was so big that it was dragging Twaha, who was doing his best just to hold on as the animal led him to its own execution.“公羊太大了,以、以致于即使塔瓦哈用尽最大的力气,也是公羊拽着他往前走,一步步接近公羊的屠宰者。”

8、“watching this scene straight out of the Bible stories I’d learned in Sunday school, I thought how much the different faiths had in common, how you could trace so many of their traditions back to the same root.“目睹这个和我在主日学校学到的《圣经》故事一模一样的场面,我不禁想到不同的信仰之间有着如此多的相似之处,并且,人们可以将其传统追溯到同一个根源。”

9、After the last bone had been beaten and the last strip of marrow sucked dry, Mortenson joined a group of men who built a fire by what would one day soon, he hoped, become the courtyard of a completed school.

10、A thousand feet below, Korphe, green with ripening barely fields, looked small and vulnerable ,a life raft on a sea of stone.

11、“Long after all those rams are dead and eaten this time this school will still stand; “那些公羊很快就会被吃光,但这个学校将会长久地屹立着。”

12、“I realized that everything ,all the difficulties i’d gone through ,from the time I’d promised to build the school, through the long struggle to complete it, was nothing compared to the sacrifices he was prepared to make for his people.”

1、I can observe her without her knowing, and this gives me pleasure, for it is as in a moving picture that I can note the grace of her gestures, whether she raises a gla of wine to her lips or turns with a remark to one of her neighbours or takes a cigarette from her case with those slender fingers.

2、I ventured to say something of the kind to her, when she laughed at my clumsy compliment and said I had better take to writing fashion articles instead of political leaders.

3、Doubtle some instinct impels me gluttonously to cram these the last weeks of my life with the gentler things I never had time for, releasing some suppreed inclination which in fact was always laten.

6、What I like best are the stern cliffs, with ranges of mountains soaring behind them, full of poibilities, peaks to be scaled only by the most daring

7、So do I let my imagination play over the recees of Laura\'s Character, so austere in the foreground but nurturing what treasures of tenderne, like delicate flowers, for the discovery of the venturesome.

8、His woman meets him; they are young, and their skins of a golden-brown; she takes his catch from him.In their plaited hut there is nothing but health and love.

9、Laura and I amuse ourselves by watching for the green flash which comes at the instant the sun disappears below the line of the.horizon.

10、In the ship\'s library stands a large globe whose function so far as I am concerned is to reveal the proportion of ocean to the landmaes of the troubled would; the Pacific alone dwarfs all the continents put together.

11、I have been exhilarated by two days of storm, but above all I love these long purposele days in which I shed all that I have ever been.

Appreciation of Writing Techniques:

The text is a piece of narration, which is organized as follows: introduction, development, climax and conclusion. The first 6 paragraphs are introductory paragraphs, giving the time, place, and background of the conflict—man versus hurricane, as well as the characters. The writer then describes how the Koshak and their friends struggled against each onslaught(冲击)of the hurricane in a chronological order(以时间顺序)from Paragraph 7 to Paragraph 26.The story reaches its climax in Paragraph 27 and from there on the story moves rapidly to its conclusion. In the last paragraph the writer states his theme in the reflection of Grandmother Koshak: “We lost practically all poeions, but the family came through it.When I think of that, I realize we lost nothing important.”

Lexically, in order to embody the ferocity of the hurricane, the writer makes effective use of verbs, such as lash, pummel, demolish, lap, swipe, skim, swath, snap, smash, slashing, etc.

Syntactically, the writer uses many elliptical and short simple sentences to increase the tempo and speed, heighten tension and help create a sense of danger and urgency.John Koshak’s urgent orders—“Back to the house!” “Count the children! Count nine!” “Everybody on the stairs!” — are good examples.

Rhetorically, the writer employs several rhetorical devices including simile, metaphor and personification to enhance the vividne of the language.

The writer portrays the characters in a heroic and appreciative way.Confronted with the formidable(难以应付的)hurricane, the characters show firm determination and utmost courage to fight against the natural disaster.Their mutual encouragement signifies the humanistic greatne, which the writer mainly strives for in the story. For example, the adults always put the children in the first place; Charlie, John’s close friend, takes responsibility for the neighbor mother and her two children; grandparents gently expre deep love to each other. After they survive, their faith in life and optimism lead them to start all over in rebuilding their home. All of them know that nothing is more important than human lives, which is the theme or the purpose behind the story.

Ⅳ.Appreciation of Fine Texts and Writing Techniques:

This text is a piece of narration. It takes the changes of the author’s thoughts and feelings as the order of the whole excerpt. The author tells us his experiences of his journey in Hiroshima and what he has seen and felt and understood there. The most-used pattern of narration is narrating and describing.Apart from the main clue of the author’s thoughts and feelings, he also spices this piece with some typical description of the characteristics of the Japanese nation, and at the same time he emphasizes the co-existence and struggle of the Eastern and Western culture. As the comment in narration is always its golden-stone which directly gives opinion and judgment of the narrated content, this text is no exception. At the end of this excerpt, the author makes some comments which echo with the title, thus makes the whole paage a smooth and natural entirety.

Ⅳ.Appreciation of Fine Texts and Writing Techniques:

Churchill came straight to the point in his speech, using brief and concise language to make clear the intention and theme of his speech. This kind of opening is usually employed on formal occasions. He employed many rhetorical devices in the main argumentative part, such as parallel structure, repetition, inversion etc.which make his speech vivid and forceful. The speech ends up with some agitative remarks calling on all the people to fight against the Nazi regime. The following are some of the rhetorical devices that Churchill employed in the speech:

Ⅳ.Appreciation of Fine Texts and Writing Techniques:

The whole piece is written in the form of self account with coherence. From the beginning about the descriptin of the atmosphere in the court, to the description of the verbal battle between the proscution and the defence, and to the end of the trial, a sense of fervour, merriment and sarcasm is felt throughtout the whole piece.Even the description of the activities by different people outside the little court is so vivid, vigorous and lively. The writer makes use of many rhetorical devices, such as metaphor, simile, pun, hyperbole, oxymoron, contrast, etc.to enhance the vividne of the language in conveying the meage. Moreover, the text is also praise-worthy in terms of diction.By the use of effective words such as “buzz”, “packed”, “baking”, “brandish”, “denounce”, “thunder”, “fervant” etc., the writer succeeds in creating a heated, stirring and conflicting atmosphere in the court.Words like “chuckle”, “snigger” and “laugh” in describling the response of the audience gradually further direct the

verbal battle to its climax.Although this piece relates only a small event that happened in a little court in Dayton, a small town in Tenneee, it conveys to readers an urgent meage that in morden society intellectual and academic freedom is much needed.

Ⅳ.Appreciation of Fine Texts and Writing Techniques:

In everyday speech and writing and in literature, figures of speech are often used to emphasize or clarify tones or atmosphere of discourse, to give life to inanimate objects for amusement or ornament. And it is exactly the immense use of figures of speech that achieve a special effect in this present text. For eample, metaphor, metonymy, antithesis, alliteration, personification, euphemism, parallelism, hyperbole are seen elsewhere in the text for different effects.

Good morning, everybody. Before my presentation,I want to do survey. How many of you have watched the TV series Fleet of Time?In Chinese cong cong na nian. You must know the protagonists Qiao Ran and Fang Hui.What ’t their favorite book? Yes,the Little Prince.I was motivated by them and read this book.Actually,it isn’t a novel,it is a fairy tale story.First,I want to read part of this story.Once when I was six years old, I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing. In the book it said:\" Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it.After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.\" I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing,My Drawing Number One.It looked like this: I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered:\"Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?\" My drawing was not a picture of a hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor,so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this: The grown-ups response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawing of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter.I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two.Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.So then I chose another profeion, and learned to pilot airplanes.I have flown a little over all parts of the world:and it is true that geography has been very useful to me.At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.Despite I’ve not in my childhood yet, I still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. The tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. This summer I’ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940.It’s the world-famous fairy-tale by the French author, Antoine de St-Exupery, The Little Prince. As many other fairy-tales, the outline of The Little Prince is not very complex.“I”, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the Sahara. In this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the Asteroid B612.The little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. In that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids. On his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a busineman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd.Following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the Sahara, on the earth.Traveling on the earth, the little prince, who sees a garden of five-thousand roses, is overcome with astonishment and sadne, as he considers his rose is unique in the universe before. At that time a fox appears. The fox, who tell the little prince about the meaning of the word “tame”, becomes his new friend. At the time to say farewell, the fox makes him know that his rose is unique because she is his rose and tamed by him. From that the little prince begins to treasure friendship and be responsible to his

2>The machine is operated by one man.....and theoccasional grunts and sighs of the camels(这套装臵是由一个人操作的。

U2Hiroshima

1)And secondly,.....Was I not at the scene of the crime?(其次,则是因为我当时心情沉重,喉咙哽噎,忧思万缕,几乎顾不上去管那日本铁路官员说些什么。

3) There are two different schools of thought...at the point of impact(在这个以牡蛎闻名的城市里有两种截然不同的意见,一种主张保存原子弹爆炸留下的痕迹,另一种则主张销毁一切痕迹,甚至要拆除立于爆炸中心的纪念碑。)

5)Each day that I escape death......I have the opportunity to improve my character

U3Ships in the Desert

1) But the most significant change.....the global atmosphere is still picking up speed迄今为止,地球大气层最重要的变化始于上世纪初的工业命,变化速度自那以后逐渐加快。

2) However, a new cla of environmental......a new threat to their survival然而,新的一类环境问题确实影响全球生态系统,而这些威胁基本上是战略性的。

3) The strategic nature of the threat now.....involve new ways of thinking about the relationship it self当前人类文明对全球环境的威胁的战略实质以及全球环境的变化对人类文明的威胁的战略实质向我们提出了一系列相似的挑战,同时也使我们产生了一些自欺欺人的期望。 U4Everyday Use

1)In real life I am a large.......keep up with my quick witty tongue在现实生活中,我是一个身材粗壮、大骨架的妇女,粗糙的双手就好比干男人活的。 2) But that is mistake.....Hesitation was no part of her nature可惜,这一切都不过是白日梦,我还没清醒之前就已经意识到了。

3)I used to think she hated Maggie,....we seemed about to understand过去,我一直以为,她也很讨厌麦琪。

4) I never had an education myself.....unle you try to milk them the wrong way我没有受过教育。

U5speech on Hitler’s Invasion of the U.S.S.R

3) He wishes to destroy theRuian.....suffer the penalty of his crimes.

4) He hopes that he may once again repeat......of the Western Hemisphere to his will and to his system .

U6Blackmail

1) I’ll tell you,....They think they got their little secret tucked away, and so they have---except like now“告诉你吧,公爵——我在这个城市和这个旅馆呆的时间都很久了。

2) Well now, there’s no call for being hasty.......No,sir, you wouldn’t like it at all“依我说呢,这事也不用着急。”

3) The Duche of Croydon kept firm,tight.....A thought occurred to her.

U9Mark Twain

2) Tom’s mischievous daring,ingenuity.....as is the Declaration of Independence.

3) Mark Twain suggested that....on the shelf occationally and renew our edges马克?

5) They vanish from a world where they ere of .....and forget them forever.

The university lecturer

The university lecturer`s qualities that I value

The different styles of university lectures can give us a lot of benefits that I value such as excellent methods of study and mental enlightenment. Also, when we have claes in the different styles of university lectures` lectures, we can get the precious frendship with teachers. In my opinion, the lecturers benefiting me most if they can make me get the benefits which I have said.

Firstly, university lectures have to be good at leading the students on gradually with excellent methods.University education is different from high school education, and it is also different from postgraduate school education. The college students still meed the instructions from their lecturers.Of course, what the lectures give the university students should be focusing more on the general guiance and thinking abilities. It is also the resposibilities of college lecturers to equip the students with the ability to distinguish right from wrong. It is a given fact that the majority of what is learnt in university will be out of date in a few years or even shorter time, so the lecturer has to understand what is eential for the students`s development, and what is something that the students can leave the university with a lifetime long use.

What is equally eential is that lectures should become role models for the students to follow, academically and otherwise.College students are around twenties, and are at an age when they would be easily

influenced by the models around them that they respect. And a lecturer, who is academicall succeful, morally upright, and spiritually emotionally self-sufficient, will surely have positive impact on the growth of the students. We can hardly imagine profeors who might be profeional sufficient, but socially cluele would help to shape the personalities of the college students.

Another quality that should not be mied is the quality of appetency so that we students can built frendship with lecturers.Lecturer`s appetency has extremely influnce on the students.A friendly teacher and students can understand each other and get along with in a harmonious atmosphere. In this relationship, college students can be more relaxed to get more knowledge and show themselves. At that time, the role of lecturers are not just teachers but college students` friend.Surely, when we look back at our college life several years after graduation, it would be those lecturs who know and understand us.

College life is one of the most important period in our life, at this time, lecturers are just like our guiders and models. Therefore, the lectures who poe the forementioned qualities will remain in my memories forever.
