申请文书，通常又称“自我陈述”，一般不超过两页A4纸，这是你在没有见到学校招生官前给他们做的一次重要的“自我介绍”，不用写你的成绩有多好，因为成绩单会告诉招生官实情；不用写你是什么学生干部、有多少抬头，获得过多少奖项，因为申请材料里的个人简历、奖状证书都已经说明情况了。
至此，许多学生懵了，这文章还能写些什么？随便对国际新闻发表点看法，对某一学术热点说些自己的态度，不行，不能随便！申请文书的重要性众所周知，招生官在申请季要看成千上万篇长短文书，想要吸引他们的眼球，得花些心思。
来说些这些年听闻的“优秀”申请文书故事。申请者并没有在文章中展现“胸怀天下”的气度，有的写作切口还很少，讲得多是“小事”，但读来让人感觉有意思、过目不忘，关键是打动人心，真实情感的流露往往能在申请中加分。
“穷学生”的哈佛路
某次在美国升学顾问经验交流会上，有位顾问分享过这样一则案例：某国一位贫困学生，凭借并不出类拔萃的SAT成绩获得了哈佛大学的全额奖学金录取。原因是什么呢？在场的人在看了他的申请文章后，都感到很难对这样的学生说不。他的文书描述了一个儿时的场景：在他小学二年级的时候，家里已无力承担他的学费，因此他被勒令退学。在他将要被带离教室的那天，这个小男孩死死地抱紧了课桌腿，涕泗交加，任何人拖他，他就是死攥着不放手，不离开自己的课室，不放弃自己的学习生涯。他的老师们看到这样的情形，无不动容，最后他们决定集体捐助这个小男孩的学费。这个学生就是通过各方的捐助完成了自己的基础教育。
我不清楚他是怎么会产生赴美留学的念头，也不知道是何种情况，让他有机会参加了费用颇高的SAT考试（当然他肯定不可能像某些申请者那样，SAT考个四五遍），五百多的SAT阅读成绩在成千上万的申请者中并不那么出挑。而读过他申请文章的人，却都对他朴实的语言和字里行间透露的真挚情感，印象深刻，脑海中无不浮现出一个无助却又对知识充满极度渴求的学生形象。在知识的海洋里，原本就无关于贫富，对待知识的态度或许决定了个体能否在学术的道路上走多远。
华一留学的Steven老师在美国留学期间会帮助一些学生修改文案，对于“穷困”的写作方面甚是了解，如果摆脱假装“哭穷”博同情，就要切合自己的经历写作，只有真的有过这样经历的学生才能将自己的苦难和求知欲恰如其分地表现。
与“大牌”国际组织“拗断”
还有一位学生的申请文章是对某世界性的学生活动组织提出质疑。这个组织热火朝天地在全球各高中开展着活动，吸引众多学生的积极参与。这位学生也“不能免俗”地成为其中一员，可是在参加了一系列活动以后，他觉得该学生组织的宗旨并没有在活动中体现出来，而大多数的参与者只是从俗，为了能在简历上留一笔，有哗众取宠之嫌，而无想获取知识、得到历练之心。
该学生在文书中直言，这些吵吵闹闹的活动，是在浪费他的时间，所以他不顾老师和家长的反对，退出了这个组织。他觉得他可以利用这些时间去做一些他真正喜欢做的事情，虽然不像这个组织这么“大牌”，这么“全球化”，但是他可以不用为了经历中有活动而活动。
可以说，当招生官在看到众多申请人在文书中介绍自己参与了多少国际组织、这些国际组织又是多么牛叉时，这个学生的反思，会让招生官对他的批判性思维留下比较深刻印象。保守地说，他的申请表暂时不会放在“拒绝名单”中。
“矮小身材”赢得名校垂青
还有这样一位申请者，写的是他如何克服身材矮小给自己带来的影响。文章中说，他写道，父母身材都颇为高大，比他小四岁的妹妹也很高挑，唯有他这个男孩子是个矮个儿，人瘦手小脚小。之前，他对此事特别上心，无论是同学间的无心戏谑“你是不是你爸妈的亲生儿子？”，还是亲人们的善意关心“你应该多吃一点”，在他听来都特别刺耳。平时连买衣服都难，成年人的对他来说太大，童装类的又偏小，而且款式也不符合年龄阶段。后来，慢慢的，他终于解开了自己的心结，虽然他不能像某些男生那样凭借身高轻松投篮，但他用更多的时间练习，掌握投篮技巧。他手指比较短小，无法尽情伸展，所以弹不好肖邦的英雄波兰舞曲，但是他可以把某个摇滚乐队的歌曲弹得出神入化……
恐怕许多学生都不会想到把自己的“缺点”当文章来写，但这个学生以坦然的心态，娓娓道来地与招生官说着他认为人生中令他印象最深刻的这件事，看似切口很少，甚至有点冒险，而在招生官这里，效果似乎不错，他获得了一所很好大学的录取通知书。或许，这则故事让招生官体会到这个男生内心的柔软处和此后走出阴霾，奋起的坚强。能直面自己缺陷的人，往往有颗强大的内心。
社交恐惧症患者“牵手”心理学
还有则与之相似的故事。有一位学生曾毫无缘由地患上了社交恐惧症，在公众场合不敢与人说话对视，最严重的时候，他无法上学，拒绝与其他人交流。所幸的是，在心理医生的治疗与家人的帮助下，他最终走出阴霾。他在文章中描述了这段经历，称因为这段经历，他对心理学产生了极大的兴趣，常常自己研习一些心理学书籍，并去担当他的心理医生的小志愿者——因为他曾经经历过这样的病痛，所以更明白与社交恐惧症的人如何相处，而其他一些身受此心理疾病折磨的青少年也相对愿意跟他有一点交流。
据我了解，在定这篇文章内容的时候，学生、家长以及升学指导老师心里都有些顾虑，这样的一种心理疾病会不会给申请带来负面的影响？万一学校担心该学生在海外学习生活中，心理和精神状态出现问题，是不是就不给录取通知书了呢？经过一番激烈的思想斗争，最终我们都觉得这篇东西很真实，而且学生从这样一种困境中走了出来，现在还能帮助别人，这种积极向上的能量是会受欢迎的。事实上，他的录取结果非常令人满意。
其实，申请文章未必要立意定得高远，异位思考，如果我们是读者，自然也希望看到一些新奇有趣，有思想，有感情的文章。当然也不能为了求新求创意，故意编造一些故事，编造之痕迹和套路，人神共愤。
可以看到，外国招生官的思维方式和他们国家的教育体系比较一致，严谨不乏宽松、随意而且客观。所以真实可信的、出其不意的、有独到见解的，都会让人喜欢的。最后再多强调也不为过：只有自创的、自我的、自信的材料文书，才是通向成功申学的金钥匙。

不论是个人陈述（Personal Statement）或者是推荐信（Recommendation Letter）其所针对的对象都是所申请学校的教授，所以文章必须尽量使用英语国家的人的思维方式，并能够吸引对方的注意力，做到eye-catching。
作为个人陈述或者是推荐信，content是最重要的问题。
其一，画龙需记得点睛（key-point）。
教授最想了解的是个人的能力，性格，和品质。有的个人陈述或者推荐信经常罗列一大推个人在校期间的事迹或者如何如何地积极参与课外活动。的确，这些活动确实能够表现出个人的性格特点以及为人处事能力，比如乐观，上进，组织能力强，协调性强，人际关系好等等一些列的personal attributes。但是，这些平时的表现只是作为一个论据，用以支持申请人对自己性格特点和个人能力的陈述。在文章的写作之中，首先需要把论点摆明，比如我是个什么样性格的人，我的能力如何，然后才需要拿这些课内外的具体活动项目作为论据充分支持证明之前的论点。总之，必须做到把话说全说完整，把论点突出（切忌遗漏），然后围绕论点展开具体的事实论证。若客户没有阐述清楚的话，文案自己可以研究活动内容，对内容体现的性格和能力进行总结。
其二，观点要出自本身，描述要细化（specification）。
教授希望通过文章了解到申请人对自己所学的和将来感兴趣的领域的认识和见解。这个是一个很好展现自身认知能力的平台。在个人陈述之中，往往可以见到很多针对某一现象或者某一领域的观点。乍看之下，说的很有气势，观点的方向也把握的很正确，但是仔细一看都是似曾相识。因为往往这些观点大家都是能够想到的非常宽泛的观点，事实上缺乏对事物和现象的深刻发掘和自身的独立思考。例如说：“I am interested in English literature”。这样的句子是为了表达申请人对文学的喜爱。但是这样的表达方式只是泛泛而谈，无法给人一个具体的印象。那就可以在后面追加解释对句子的表达具体化，比如说“I was concentrated on Milton and Shakespeare in college”等等，使得自己的陈述更为真实具有说服力。从文案顾问的角度来说，需要客户尽量提供更为细致和个性化的观点和见解。在客户不能提供的情况下，文案可以尽量帮助客户把观点细节化，避免落于泛泛而谈的俗套。
其三，内容需踏实中肯，也就是文章的（authenticity）。
一篇能吸引人的成功个人陈述或者是推荐信必须是要有内容的。这个内容指的是必须言之有物。华而不实，终究不能给读者留下任何实质性的印象。要做到言之有物，就必须避免空话套话。比如说在阐述自己为什么选择美国作为留学的目的地之时，一些赞美美国经济发达，氛围民主，环境优美一些客套话虽然是没有什么不妥之处。但是恭维的话谁都可以讲，并且一般来说如果对自己所去的国家，所选择的大学和专业的理由没有直接的帮助说明作用的话，那么这些表达都是空洞不实的。好的表达应该是把做出某种选择的理由和个人真实想法、亲身经历结合起来。可以以自己之前的某一具体经历，对自己产生了某种影响或者改变了自己的某种观点，进而让自己选择了某个国家或者激起了自己对某个领域的浓厚兴趣。这样的story-telling式表达或者说是适当篇幅的narration可以让文章显得更为新颖和真切，也更能使得个人陈述或者介绍信的读者对于申请人做出选择的理由有一个更加深刻的印象和了解。
出国留学文案的写作是针对申请人在事实基础上的一定程度的文字包装，因此一些写作技巧是必须用到的。以下是我个人总结的几点：
1、有所侧重点的，避免面面俱到。
流水账式的陈述不仅给人印象平淡，更是给人感觉这就是另外一份CV。在文案写作之中，需要在客户所罗列的种种参加的活动或者经历之中，找出最闪光的一两件事情重点描述（focus on it）。而在每个段落，也需要在每段开头添加Topic Sentences，用以提挈纲领。
2、适当的创新总是消除读者疲倦感，是赢得关注的不二法宝。中国人，尤其是中国学生的创新能力一直倍受国际社会的质疑。诚然，普遍来说，确实是这么一个状况。在个人陈述或者推荐信的创新中，基本可以分为内容的新颖，表述的新颖和格式的新颖。内容因客户自身素质不同，所提供的经历也不尽相同。而文案顾问所能改变的在于表述和格式安排两块上。要做到表述新颖，最重要的丰富词汇量是不可或缺。同样一个表示“杰出“的词，在英文中可以有很多说法，比如“excellent, eminent, brilliant\"等等，所以在措辞的选择上，尽量避免重复。但是并不是说要一味追求新颖而采用生僻词。例如，在表达宣传部长中的“宣传”时，可以看到propaganda一词，而这一较为生僻的词事实上表示贬义的情形居多。所以应当在了解清楚词汇的用法的基础上，追求创新。而格式安排的新颖既包括句子结构和文章结构。英语的句式千变万化，在清楚地表达内容的基础上，不同句式可以尽量多采用，一味的“I ....”开头比较忌讳。而整篇文章结构的新颖是比较难做到的，就如同中文写作一样，有普通的三段式，也有自由诗。一般来说，采用三段式个人觉得比较稳妥。但是应当尽量使用承上启下的句子，圆润三段之间生硬的衔接。
3、注重头尾，在文章的开头和结尾做文章，尽量不落俗套。其实，这也是一个创新的问题。普遍来说，很多个人陈述和推荐信都以“My name is…”、“I’m a student/ profeor/ teacher…”、“I recommend *** to you”这样的定式开头，又以“I hope I could have this opportunity to study in your college/ university…..”之类的套话结尾。这样的开头结尾是申请人定式思维的结果。如果说改动内容，其实不是很实际，因为自我介绍是必须的，但是可以考虑换一个方式（比如故事讲述的形式娓娓道来）介绍自己。
4、知己知彼，尽可能避免文化认知差异。这个所说的就是要了解外国人的文化差异和自己所申请的学校的信息。很多人喜欢在个人陈述之中说自己面对过很多“failures”，其实一般出国留学的客户的年龄都是在二十左右的阶段，不会有真正很大的失败。所以说倒不妨改成接受了很多的“challenges”。这样外国人就会觉得你很有挑战新事物的激情。这就是一个将劣势转化为优势的过程。又或者很多人喜欢把自己的经历或者家庭条件描述的很惨，以博取同情心，我觉得描述家境背景应当以一个客观，真实，积极地态度来进行。因为，在外国，中产阶级才是被认为推动社会进步的力量。作为文案，就是需要尽量消除从中国文化到英语文化转换过程中的“cultural-shock”现象。另外也要了解所申请的学校信息，因为每个学校都有自己的办学理念。了解这些，就能在描述自身择校动机的过程中，加以融合，写至文章当中，让读者认识到申请人的申请是有针对性的，避免了给人以海投的印象。
5、文章的审核和修改。在出国材料的写作之中，单词写错或者语法错误是在所难免的事情。但是这个低级错误会给人不好的印象，所以在终稿定稿前确保单词拼写和语法使用的正确。另外文章的版式可以稍作调整，使用常用的字体，行距等等，让文章整体显得落落大方。
