---Book Review: “Camille”

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago.At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier.“Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in paris in the mid 1800\'s, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past.Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was.She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him.It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

However, happine didn’t last for long. When M.Duval, Armand\'s father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand\'s reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happine and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her.Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illne. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had.I think Dumas\'s last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society aume that all of these type of women are cold and heartle, while this may not always be the case.A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so.This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc.And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat.Of course, the Comte de G.and Comte de N.wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men.I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

Last morning, when tiding my bookshelf, I took this book out of the shelf, and a dried flower flew away from the book.It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins.a dried flower flew away from the book.It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins.I held it against the morning light and blew on it.The soft breeze carried it away.Camille is just like the camellia, she could never escape from the destiny of withering. But it wasn’t her fault; it’s because of the evil of Capitalism and the hideousne of that society.

Suddenly, I remembered a saying: “Women are like the flowers”.Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers; their delicate beauty makes people feel they are the miracle of life. However, even the God envies their beauty. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. As we are normal persons, even we can see the hideousne of humanity that results in their fate of withering, we can at most ask quietly in our hearts: Where have those beautiful flowers gone? Where have they gone?

The Reading Report of Camille

Dumas Alexander fils was a French playwright and novelist, he was one of the founders of the problem play—that is, of the middle-cla realistic drama treating some contemporary ill and offering suggestion for its remedy.Dumas fils, the illegitimate son of Alexander Dumas pere, poeed a good measure of his father’s literary, but the work of the two men could scarcely be more different. His first succe was a novel, La Dame aux camelias (1848), but he found his vocation when he adapted the story into a play, known in English as Camille, first performed in 1852.Among his most interesting plays are Le Fils natural and Un Pere prodigue, a dramatization of Dumas’s interpretation of his father’s character.

The Lady of the Camellias

She always wears only camellia.A month, there are twenty-five days she wearing white camellia, red camellia with another five days.No one knows the reason why the color change. In Mrs.Bally\"s flower shop, she was called La Traviata.

Marguerite Gautier, a prostitute lives in Paris, she had a bad body, accustomed luxury life, seems there should be no true love.

She seemed only have commercial relationship and couldn”tget true love .They indulge in the luxury of material life, trying to hide and escape from theof ture feelings, but once they met ture love ,they will strive for it.Margaret is such a woman.

Armand seems very like Margaret. In fact, he love the woman very much. But his paranoid

personality let him to the t tragedy last.He seems very firmly pursue the love, but actually very soft.He failed to convince and force against his father.Especially when Marguerite left, and become others”lover, his Confused.sense and bad action made me very disappointed. He didn\'t have the courage to pursue their happine all the time

This paragraph of love from beginning to end without a solid economic foundation, seems to be doomed their tragedy. But I think this is not the main reason, the most important reason is Armand”scowardly character

If I should summarize the story with a minimum of words, the summary would be like that one such courtesan, once in her life, experienced deep love, that she suffered for it and died for it.Most people have this image of Marguerite as always being sanctity and pure. She used to be a countrywoman, but she came to Paris to earn her bread by prostituting herself.Unfortunately, the extravagant circumstance made she lead her life in luxury. As she indulgent with herself, she still felt and detested the huge void in her life. She was visible still in the virgin stage of vice and anticipated a section of true love---- she knew clearly that those dukes’ love was a mere sham, what they really wanted was her marvelous face to show how their social statuses are.

Armand’s appearance was evangel to Marguerite. She drew an irresistible attraction to Armand and found out that there would be someone who called to have the latest news of the patient every day during herself was ill, there would be someone who treasure up a fastener that she lost 6 months ago, there would be someone who would love her sincerely. They fall in love. The loved each other to distraction.

Marguerite attained renascence. She got rid of her previous life and braced herself to lead a normal one.Nonethele, Armand’s father shattered her dream. She was compelled to estrange herself form Armand, whereas he couldn’t even understand her sacrifice. He subjected Marguerite to constant persecution till she died.(Armand leave Paris few days before Marguerite fell ill, but the pain he caused wasn’t eased till she die.)

I thought Armand’s father’s selfish caused M’s death, I thought Armand’s envy and vanity caused M’s death, I thought Blanche, who had a soul that conceives only saintly thoughts, was unaware that in a far country a courtesan had sacrificed her own happine to the mere mention of her name, should also take the responsibility.I even hope if M could be a little bit selfish, did not think of others too much, the situation would better.Armand said M was as disinterested as the others are grasping. She sure was.

The camellia has withered away.

Suddenly, I remembered a saying: “Women are like

The Lady of the Camellias--Review

After reading “The Lady of the Camellias” which was written by Alexandre Dumas, fils, I wanted to give my opinions on the book.Alexandre Dumas, fils, born in Paris in 1824, is considered as one of the most notable French dramatists of the nineteenth century. He was the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas.(father), the author of novels: The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

Dumas was raised by his seamstre mother, until his father legally recognized him and aumed responsibility for his care. But his father never recognized his mother. Therefore, someone think that Dumas expreed his great sympathy with his poor mother through this article. His illegitimacy caused him much unhappine, both in private school and in college where he had few friends. At age of seventeen, he moved in with his father, soon adopted his extravagant lifestyle and fell into debt. One evening, at the theatre, he first met Marie Dupleis who had already famous in the demimonde for her beauty and ability to make men spend money on her.One day, out of the opera, he saw her coughing episode resulted in her spitting up blood. He suggested her to change her lifestyle, but she replied, \"I should die.The exciting life keeps me alive\".In order to change Dupleis’ lifestyle, He implied that she would get better if she did as what he said, and she finally agreed upon the condition.\"You are not to spy on me, you are not to ask questions; I shall live exactly as I please without giving you any account of what I do.\"However, Dumas found that Dupleis never try to give up the way she live in the past.He argued with her but it didn’t work. Finally, he decided to break up with her.

He was on a trip to Spain and North Africa when he heard that she was gravely ill.He wrote to her, telling her that he would return and ask for her forgivene. But he waited too long.Dupleis died of tuberculosis in 1846.Her tragic death, along with bitterne over his illegitimacy, inspires Dumas to write the novel The Lady of the Camellias, which are based on the Dupleis-Dumas affair. The name of the hero, Armand Duval, is a thin disguise for the author.Actually, Dumas tells the story in the third person as it was related to him by Armand Duval.

Having read the English version of The Lady of the Camellias which was so attractive that I stayed up late to read this works every night I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier for her poor status but noble heart.

Let me tell you the tragic love story between Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval.Marguerite Gautier was a young courtesan, in Paris in the mid 1800\'s.A

courtesan can\'t have the true love. But she falls in love with Armand Duval who is a middlecla young man and Armand loved Marguerite very much.“Now, I was in love with Marguerite.I had nothing more to ask of her.Neverthele, though she was only a courtesan, I had anticipated for myself.Perhaps I poetize it a little, a hopele love, that the nearer the moment approached Now.It seems that I am not handsome or rich or elegant enough to poe such a woman, now I was filled with vanity; then I began to fear that Marguerite had no more caprice for me.And I said to myself since we have to part soon, it would be better not to keep her appointment, but to write and tell her my fears and leave her. From that I went on to unlimited hope, unbounded confidence.I dreamed incredible dreams of the future; I said to myself that she should owe me her moral and physical recovery, that I should spend my whole life with her, and that her love should make me happier than all the maidenly loves in the world.Armand said to himself when he was waiting for meeting Marguerite. For Marguerite’s fragile physical state, she moves to the country. There in her new house, a confrontation between the jealous Armand and her rich admirers took place. Finally, Marguerite made a choice between Armand and other admirers to show her love to Armand. After that, they lived a period of happy and peaceful life in the country.

However, Armand began to become depreed for he found that he was not able to support his Marguerite daily life.Marguerite had sold her horses and diamonds for their life secretly.ButMarguerite said “I love you ,and I want to do something for our love. You know I don’t need these luxurious things any more If I had you.We can use the money to buy a small house and live together forever.” When the happy future was approaching, the arrival of Armand’s father broke the peace.Armand’s father comes to plead for Marguerite to leave Armand so that she could save both his son\'s reputation and his younger innocent sister -- whom is also tainted by the scandal. He said “Mi, You love Armand, and the only way you will be able to show your love to him is to leave him.He sacrificed for the future of your love. What is the only way? That means you leave without saying anything.Marguerite found a way to become pure. She felt that it was her duty because she loved Armand so much even though it meant giving up her own happine and hurting Armand temporarily. She returned to Paris where she desperately throws herself back into her old lifestyle.Armand can\'t believe her left and look for her .finally he find she was in Paris in the arms of a new love.

The two meet again in public. But now Armand was companied with an another

beautiful courtesan and began to \"paying court\" not with her but with her friend in order to strike back at Marguerite for his own pain.Facing with the great pain Armand brought to her, Marguerite said “The hurt you sought to do to me was your good opinion.” Marguerite visits Armand last time and Armand hoped they could get together again. But Marguerite is haunted by guilt that she can only harm Armand and keep her promise to his father -- she abandoned him again as he slept. Finally Marguerite died sadly and alone.

At the end, Armand was given Marguerite\'s diary in which he finally learned her illne and her undying love for him along with the extent of anguish. He was deeply painful.Marguerite never came back.

After finished the book, I found that Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her because she was just a poor courtesan.the only exceptions were Armand and Julie Duprat.Of course, the Comte de G.and Comte de N.wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter.

So when she met Armand who could give her true love, She gave all her love in return at the cost of her happine and life. But the ruthle society didn’t allow Marguerite to get her own happine no matter how much effort she had made.Eventually, Marguerite, a beautiful and innocent courtesan died on a cold winter.A nice and pure camellia withered away in the world.

The lady of the Camellias(茶花女英文读后感)

The lady of the Camellias

The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas, is the story of Marguerite Gautier. She is a prostitute or a kept woman lived in Paris in the mid 1800\'s.She is famous and talented, living an extravagant and diipated prostitute life.

When we talked about The lady of the Camellias, first we might think is “the tragic prostitute”, what we thought about her was just feel pity on her tragic outcome and hate the feudalism’s apathy and ruthle.A young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800’s, She got lost herself in the emptine, and how she falls in love with a young man, Aermang Duval, after then she tries to escape from her questionable past.Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone. But in fact, when we go further to the narrative, what we thought about the lady Marguerite is not only the sympathy or the more it should be admiration or appreciation. She got lost in a luxury and diipation life, but she was still sure what exactly she was pursuing and was keeping her own principles, without any

consideration to pursue her true love once she met up with it.Her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was.She strongly resist the reality of the society, but still gave up temporary happine herself at last due to her kind of forbearance,

sacrifice herself to achieve others’ aim. Therefore, she worth us to lay aside these worldly prejudices to recognize and appreciate. So to figure out Camellie, we can mainly talk about in the following aspects: her lost, rigid and forbearance.

It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. In my view, the lovers should believe each other, only did so can they get on well with each other and have a good future. When they face some difficult problems, they can solve them together.A bit more trust, a le suspicion, if they did this, the love tragedy would not happen.

The lead heroine is Marguerite Gautier, a young beautiful courtesan who is a \"kept woman\" by counts and dukes -- men of \"Fashionable Society\".She meets a young middle cla lover Armand Duval who does the unpardonable thing of falling jealously in love with her and breaking all convention of what\'s expected between a courtesan and her admirers. He, of course, has no way of sustaining the standard of living which she is accustomed to.

In her fragile physical state (Marguerite has tuberculosis which ) she moves to the country. There in her new house, a confrontation between the jealous Armand and her rich admirers and \"benefactors\" takes place. For the first time she sticks up for her lover -- making a life choice -- and they are left indignantly and alone.

LaDameauxCamelias

The author of this book, Alexandre Dumas fils was the illegitimate son of Dumas pere, who is a giant of the literary world. He himself was also a famous novelist and dramatist in the 19th century.

When I first knew this situation, I was surprised that the father and the son could both make so many contributions in the same circles. This reminded me of the “Three Su” in Song Dynasty, three poets whose names were SuXun, SuShi and SuZhe.Their relationships are similar to Dumas because they all have great achievements in history of literature.

The heroine in the novel is Mademoiselle Marguerite Gautier, who is one of the most celebrated courtesans in social circles in Pairs.Even if she lives in the luxurious house and spends money like water, she put up with the

trauma of mental and physical at the same time.Eventually she suffered from a serious illne.Owing to the lack of love and solicitude, she felt spiritually barren and lonely.I think this foreshadowed her tragedy in life.At first, I didn’t pay attention to her attitude towards life, but as I got further into the novel, I realized that she felt used, abused and unloved in the upper cla until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and told her that he loved her wholehearted and not for what she could do for him.It needs great courage for her to abandon the life she had enjoyed for so long.Eventually, she sold out her jewelry to pay for the cost of living, and then lived happily and calmly with Armand in the countryside.I think it showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change everything and persist herself in the world full of money. In my heart, she is really a beautiful girl who has pure soul like white camellia.

However, happine didn’t last for long. When M.Duval, Armand\'s father, came to her and pleaded for her to leave Armand to save both Armand\'s reputation and his younger innocent sister, she felt that it was her duty because her status influenced Armand\'s family. In order for the benefits of Armand and his family, Marguerite determined to make sacrifices. It meant giving up her own happine and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that someday Armand would forgive her.Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illne.Ultimately, she couldn’t see her lover for the last time. Before she was dying, all the creditors came to her house with IOU and forced her to pay the debts. They have no mercy on the poor girl, only want to get benefits from her even when she was dying.I tasted people’s greed and unfeelingne.

Some other characters that connected with Marguerite had their own purpose.I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, the only person who is concerned about her is Armand.Others only wanted something from her.For example, the Comte de G.and Comte de N.simply care about her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he would have helped her change her lifestyle. And lastly, Prudence was a bloodsucker who used Marguerite till the last time.I also think she was jealous of Marguerite that she had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

I think the sources of the Camellia’s tragic fate are her kind-hearted character, her persistence with love and courage to life. Her tragedy also reveals the corruption and darkne in society.

Camille is just like the camellia, she could never escape from the tragic destiny. But it wasn’t her fault; it’s because of the evil of capitalism and the darkne of that society. She is small and weak when faced with the whole society, and is difficult to shake off fetters of conventional views. But her seek for love, desire to freedom and strong belief in life encouraged me a lot.Camellia is the claical image in the literature circles of the world. She has filthy profeion and beautiful soul, lowly status and firm character. Her final result gave me endle regret and sentimentalism

Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers, their delicate beauty makes people feel they are scenery of life. However, even the God envies their beauty. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. As we are normal persons, even we can see the darkne of humanity that results in their fate of withering, we can at most ask quietly in our hearts: Where have those

beautiful flowers gone? Where have they gone?

世间处处有真情,为何只用有色待;

我本都是善良人,万般无奈入红尘;
