i am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.i never graduated from college.truth be told, this is the closest i\'ve ever gotten to a college graduation.

today i want to tell you three stories from my life.that\'s it.no big deal.just three stories.

the first story is about connecting the dots.

i dropped out of reed college after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before i really quit.so why did i drop out?

it started before i was born.my biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.she felt very strongly that i should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.except that when i popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.so my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: \"we have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?\" they said: \"of course.\" my biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.she refused to sign the final adoption papers.she only relented a few months later when my parents promised that i would someday go to college.

and 17 years later i did go to college.but i naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as stanford, and all of my working-cla parents\' savings were being spent on my college tuition.after six months, i couldn\'t see the value in it.i had no idea what i wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.and here i was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.so i decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out ok.it was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions i ever made.the minute i dropped out i could stop taking the required claes that didn\'t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

it wasn\'t all romantic.i didn\'t have a dorm room, so i slept on the floor in friends\' rooms, i returned coke bottles for the 5 deposits to buy food with, and i would walk the 7 miles acro town every sunday night to get one good meal a week at the hare krishna temple.i loved it.and much of what i stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be pricele later on.let me give you one example: reed college at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.because i had dropped out and didn\'t have to take the normal claes, i decided to take a calligraphy cla to learn how to do this.i learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.it was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can\'t capture, and i found it fascinating.

none of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.but ten years later, when we were designing the first macintosh computer, it all came back to me.and we designed it all into the mac.it was the first computer with beautiful typography.if i had never dropped in on that single course in college, the mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.and since windows just copied the mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them.if i had never dropped out, i would have never dropped in on this calligraphy cla, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.of course it was impoible to connect the dots looking forward when i was in college.but it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

again, you can\'t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.you have to trust in somethingthe macintoshthat i had dropped the baton as it was being paed to me.i met with david packard and bob noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.i was a very public failure, and i even thought about running away from the valley.but something slowly began to dawn on me – i still loved what i did.the turn of events at apple had not changed that one bit.i had been rejected, but i was still in love.and so i decided to start over.

i didn\'t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.the heavine of being succeful was replaced by the lightne of being a beginner again, le sure about everything.it freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

during the next five years, i started a company named next, another company named pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.

pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, toy story, and is now the most succeful animation studio in the world.in a remarkable turn of events, apple bought next, i retuned to apple, and the technology we developed at next is at the heart of apple\'s current renaiance.and laurene and i have a wonderful family together.

i\'m pretty sure none of this would have happened if i hadn\'t been fired from apple.it was awful tasting medicine, but i gue the patient needed it.

sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.don\'t lose faith.i\'m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that i loved what i did.

you\'ve got to find what you love.and that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.and the only way to do great work is to love what you do.if you haven\'t found it yet, keep looking.don\'t settle.as with all matters of the heart, you\'ll know when you find it.and, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.so keep looking until you find it.don\'t settle.

my third story is about death.

when i was 17, i read a quote that went something like: \"if you live each day as if it was your last, someday you\'ll most certainly be right.\" it made an impreion on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, i have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: \"if today were the last day of

But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 2008, likely to touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities.Even your nationality sets you apart.The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining superpower.The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest, the preure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders.That is your privilege, and your burden.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.I never graduated from college.Truth be told, this is the closest I\'ve ever gotten to a college graduation.Today I want to tell you three stories from my life.That\'s it.No big deal.Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.So why did I drop out? It started before I was born.My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: \"We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?\" They said: \"Of course.\" My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.She refused to sign the final adoption papers.She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.And 17 years later I did go to college.But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-cla parents\' savings were being spent on my college tuition.After six months, I couldn\'t see the value in it.I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required claes that didn\'t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn\'t all romantic.I didn\'t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends\' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles acro town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.I loved it.And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be pricele later on.Let me give you one example: Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.Because I had dropped out and didn\'t have to take the normal claes, I decided to take a calligraphy cla to learn how to do this.I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can\'t capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.And we designed it all into the Mac.It was the first computer with beautiful typography.If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them.If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy cla, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.Of course it was impoible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later. Again, you can\'t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. My second story is about love and lo.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life.Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.And then I got fired.How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him.So at 30 I was out.And very publicly out.What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating. I really didn\'t know what to do for a few months.I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs downthese things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.You are already naked.There is no reason not to follow your heart. About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.I didn\'t even know what a pancreas was.The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor\'s code for prepare to die.It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you\'d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months.It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as poible for your family.It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day.Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.I had the surgery and I\'m fine now.

This was the closest I\'ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades.Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die.Even people who want to go to heaven don\'t want to die to get there.And yet death is the destination we all share.No one has ever escaped it.And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.It is Life\'s change agent.It clears out the old to make way for the new.Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. Your time is limited, so don\'t waste it living someone else\'s life.Don\'t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people\'s thinking.Don\'t let the noise of others\' opinions drown out your own inner voice.And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.They somehow already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.So why did I drop out? It started before I was born.My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: \"We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?\" They said: \"Of course.\" My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.She refused to sign the final adoption papers.She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.And 17 years later I did go to college.But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-cla parents\' savings were being spent on my college tuition.After six months, I couldn\'t see the value in it.I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required claes that didn\'t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.It wasn\'t all romantic.I didn\'t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends\' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles acro town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.I loved it.And

much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be pricele later on.Let me give you one example: Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.Because I had dropped out and didn\'t have to take the normal claes, I decided to take a calligraphy cla to learn how to do this.I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can\'t capture, and I found it fascinating.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.And we designed it all into the Mac.It was the first computer with beautiful typography.If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.And since Windows just copied the Mac, it\'s likely that no personal computer would have them.If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy cla, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.Of course it was impoible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.Again, you can\'t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.You have to trust in somethingI found what I loved to do early in life.Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.We had just released our finest creationa year earlier, and I had just turned 30.And then I got fired.How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him.So at 30 I was out.And very

publicly out.What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.I really didn\'t know what to do for a few months.I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs downI still loved what I did.The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.I had been rejected, but I was still in love.And so I decided to start over.I didn\'t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.The heavine of being succeful was replaced by the lightne of being a beginner again, le sure about everything.It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most succeful animation studio in the world.In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple\'s current renaiance.And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.I\'m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn\'t been fired from Apple.It was awful tasting medicine, but I gue the patient needed it.Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.Don\'t lose faith.I\'m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.You\'ve got to find what you love.And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.If you haven\'t found it yet, keep looking.Don\'t settle.As with all matters of the heart, you\'ll know when you find it.And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.So keep looking until you find it.Don\'t settle.My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: \"If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you\'ll most certainly be right.\" It made an impreion on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: \"If today were the

last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?\" And whenever the answer has been \"No\" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.Remembering that I\'ll be dead soon is the most important tool I\'ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.Because almost everythingthese things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.You are already naked.There is no reason not to follow your heart.About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.I didn\'t even know what a pancreas was.The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor\'s code for prepare to die.It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you\'d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months.It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as poible for your family.It means to say your goodbyes.I lived with that diagnosis all day.Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.I had the surgery and I\'m fine now.This was the closest I\'ve been to facing death, and I hope it\'s the closest I get for a few more decades.Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die.Even people who want to go to heaven don\'t want to die to get there.And yet death is the destination we all share.No one has ever escaped it.And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.It is Life\'s change agent.It clears out the old to make way for the new.Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don\'t waste it living someone else\'s life.Don\'t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people\'s thinking.Don\'t let the noise of others\' opinions drown out your own inner voice.And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.They somehow already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch.This was in the late 1960\'s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, sciors, and polaroid cameras.It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.Stewart and his team put out several iues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final iue.It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.On the back cover of their final iue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.Beneath it were the words: \"Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.\" It was their farewell meage as they signed off.Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.And I have always wished that for myself.And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.Thank you all very much.

I have, therefore, chosen this time and place to discu a topic on which ignorance too often abounds and the truth too rarely perceived.And that is the most important topic on earth: peace.What kind of peace do I mean and what kind of a peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war.Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave.I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, and the kind that enables men and nations to grow, and to hope, and build a better life for their children -- not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women, not merely peace in our time but peace in all time.

I speak of peace because of the new face of war.Total war makes no sense in an age where great powers can maintain large and relatively invulnerable nuclear forces and refuse to surrender without resort to those forces.It makes no sense in an age where a single nuclear weapon contains almost ten times the explosive force delivered by all the allied air forces in the Second World War.It makes no sense in an age when the deadly poisons produced by a nuclear exchange would be carried by wind and water and soil and seed to the far corners of the globe and to generations yet unborn.

Today the expenditure of billions of dollars every year on weapons acquired for the purpose of making sure we never need them is eential to the keeping of peace.But surely the acquisition of such idle stockpiles -- which can only destroy and never create -- is not the only, much le the most efficient, means of auring peace.I speak of peace, therefore, as the neceary, rational end of rational men.I realize the pursuit of peace is not as dramatic as the pursuit of war, and frequently the words of the pursuers fall on deaf ears.But we have no more urgent task.

Some say that it is usele to speak of peace or world law or world disarmament, and that it will be usele until the leaders of the Soviet union adopt a more enlightened attitude.I hope they do.I believe we can help them do it.But I also believe that we must reexamine our own attitudes, as individuals and as a Nation, for our attitude is as eential as theirs.And every graduate of this school, every thoughtful citizen who despairs of war and wishes to bring peace, should begin by looking inward, by examining his own attitude towards the poibilities of peace, towards the Soviet Union, towards the course of the cold war and towards freedom and peace here at home.

First examine our attitude towards peace itself.Too many of us think it is impoible.Too many think it is unreal.But that is a dangerous, defeatist belief.It leads to the conclusion that war is inevitable, that mankind is doomed, that we are gripped by forces we cannot control.We need not accept that view.Our problems are manmade; therefore, they can be solved by man.And man can be as big as he wants.No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings.Man\'s reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable, and we believe they can do it again.I am not referring to the absolute, infinite concept of universal peace and good will of which some fantasies and fanatics dream.I do not deny the value of hopes and dreams but we merely invite discouragement and incredulity by making that our only and immediate goal.

Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace, based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions -- on a series of concrete actions and effective agreements which are in the interest of all concerned.There is no single, simple key to this peace; no grand or magic formula to be adopted by one or two powers.Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts.It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation.For peace is a proce -- a way of solving problems.

With such a peace, there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations.World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor, it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement.And history teaches us that enmities between nations, as between individuals, do not last forever.However fixed our likes and dislikes may seem, the tide of time and events will often bring surprising changes in the relations between nations and neighbors.So let us persevere.Peace need not be impracticable, and war need not be inevitable.By defining our goal more clearly, by making it seem more manageable and le remote, we can help all people to see it, to draw hope from it, and to move irresistibly towards it.

And second, let us reexamine our attitude towards the Soviet Union.It is discouraging to think that their leaders may actually believe what their propagandists write.It is discouraging to read a recent, authoritative Soviet text on military strategy and find, on page after page, wholly basele and incredible claims, such as the allegation that American imperialist circles are preparing to unleash different types of war, that there is a very real threat of a preventive war being unleashed by American imperialists against the Soviet Union, and that the political aims -- and I quote -- \"of the American imperialists are to enslave economically and politically the European and other capitalist countries and to achieve world domination by means of aggreive war.\"

Truly, as it was written long ago: \"The wicked flee when no man pursueth.\" Yet it is sad to read these Soviet statements, to realize the extent of the gulf between us.But it is also a warning, a warning to the American people not to fall into the same trap as the Soviets, not to see only a distorted and desperate view of the other side, not to see conflict as inevitable, accommodation as impoible, and communication as nothing more than an exchange of threats. No government or social system is so evil that its people must be considered as lacking in virtue.As Americans, we find communism profoundly repugnant as a negation of personal freedom and dignity.But we can still hail the Ruian people for their many achievements in science and space, in economic and industrial growth, in culture, in acts of courage.

Among the many traits the peoples of our two countries have in common, none is stronger than our mutual abhorrence of war.Almost unique among the major world powers, we have never been at war with each other.And no nation in the history of battle ever suffered more than the Soviet union in the Second World War.At least 20 million lost their lives.Countle millions of homes and families were burned or sacked.A third of the nation\'s territory, including two thirds of its industrial base, was turned into a wasteland -- a lo equivalent to the destruction of this country east of Chicago.

Today, should total war ever break out again -- no matter how -- our two countries will be the primary target.It is an ironic but accurate fact that the two strongest powers are the two in the most danger of devastation.All we have built, all we have worked for, would be destroyed in the first 24 hours.And even in the cold war, which brings burdens and dangers to so many countries, including this Nation\'s closest allies, our two countries bear the heaviest burdens.For we are both devoting maive sums of money to weapons that could be better devoted to combat ignorance, poverty, and disease.We are both caught up in a vicious and dangerous cycle, with suspicion on one side breeding suspicion on the other, and new weapons begetting counter-weapons.In short, both the United States and its allies, and the Soviet union and its allies, have a mutually deep interest in a just and genuine peace and in halting the arms race.Agreements to this end are in the interests of the Soviet union as well as ours.And even the most hostile nations can be relied upon to accept and keep those treaty obligations, and only those treaty obligations, which are in their own interest.

So let us not be blind to our differences, but let us also direct attention to our common interests and the means by which those differences can be resolved.And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.For in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet.We all breathe the same air.We all cherish our children\'s futures.And we are all mortal.

Third, let us reexamine our attitude towards the cold war, remembering we\'re not engaged in a debate, seeking to pile up debating points.We are not here distributing blame or pointing the finger of judgment.We must deal with the world as it is, and not as it might have been had the history of the last 18 years been different.We must, therefore, persevere in the search for peace in the hope that constructive changes within the Communist bloc might bring within reach solutions which now seem beyond us.We must conduct our affairs in such a way that it becomes in the Communists\' interest to agree on a genuine peace.And above all, while defending our own vital interests, nuclear powers must avert those confrontations which bring an adversary to a choice of either a humiliating retreat or a nuclear war.To adopt that kind of course in the nuclear age would be evidence only of the bankruptcy of our policy -- or of a collective death-wish for the world.

To secure these ends, America\'s weapons are nonprovocative, carefully controlled, designed to deter, and capable of selective use.Our military forces are committed to peace and disciplined in self-restraint.Our diplomats are instructed to avoid unneceary irritants and purely rhetorical hostility.For we can seek a relaxation of tensions without relaxing our guard.And, for our part, we do not need to use threats to prove we are resolute.We do not need to jam foreign broadcasts out of fear our faith will be eroded.We are unwilling to impose our system on any unwilling people, but we are willing and able to engage in peaceful competition with any people on earth. Meanwhile, we seek to strengthen the United Nations, to help solve its financial problems, to make it a more effective instrument for peace, to develop it into a genuine world security system -- a system capable of resolving disputes on the basis of law, of insuring the security of the large and the small, and of creating conditions under which arms can finally be abolished.At the same time we seek to keep peace inside the non-Communist world, where many nations, all of them our friends, are divided over iues which weaken Western unity, which invite Communist intervention, or which threaten to erupt into war.Our efforts in West New Guinea, in the Congo, in the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, have been persistent and patient despite criticism from both sides.We have also tried to set an example for others, by seeking to adjust small but significant differences with our own closest neighbors in Mexico and Canada.

Speaking of other nations, I wish to make one point clear.We are bound to many nations by alliances.Those alliances exist because our concern and theirs substantially overlap.Our commitment to defend Western Europe and West Berlin, for example, stands undiminished because of the identity of our vital interests.The United States will make no deal with the Soviet union at the expense of other nations and other peoples, not merely because they are our partners, but also because their interests and ours converge.Our interests converge, however, not only in defending the frontiers of freedom, but in pursuing the paths of peace.It is our hope, and the purpose of allied policy, to convince the Soviet union that she, too, should let each nation choose its own future, so long as that choice does not interfere with the choices of others.The Communist drive to impose their political and economic system on others is the primary cause of world tension today.For there can be no doubt that if all nations could refrain from interfering in the self-determination of others, the peace would be much more aured.

This will require a new effort to achieve world law, a new context for world discuions.It will require increased understanding between the Soviets and ourselves.And increased understanding will require increased contact and communication.One step in this direction is the proposed arrangement for a direct line between Moscow and Washington, to avoid on each side the dangerous delays, misunderstandings, and misreadings of others\' actions which might occur at a time of crisis.

We have also been talking in Geneva about our first-step measures of arm[s] controls designed to limit the intensity of the arms race and reduce the risk of accidental war.Our primary long range interest in Geneva, however, is general and complete disarmament, designed to take place by stages, permitting parallel political developments to build the new institutions of peace which would take the place of arms.The pursuit of disarmament has been an effort of this Government since the 1920\'s.It has been urgently sought by the past three administrations.And however dim the prospects are today, we intend to continue this effort -- to continue it in order that all countries, including our own, can better grasp what the problems and poibilities of disarmament are.

The only major area of these negotiations where the end is in sight, yet where a fresh start is badly needed, is in a treaty to outlaw nuclear tests.The conclusion of such a treaty, so near and yet so far, would check the spiraling arms race in one of its most dangerous areas.It would place the nuclear powers in a position to deal more effectively with one of the greatest hazards which man faces in 1963, the further spread of nuclear arms.It would increase our security; it would decrease the prospects of war.Surely this goal is sufficiently important to require our steady pursuit, yielding neither to the temptation to give up the whole effort nor the temptation to give up our insistence on vital and responsible safeguards.

I\'m taking this opportunity, therefore, to announce two important decisions in this regard.First, Chairman Khrushchev, Prime Minister Macmillan, and I have agreed that high-level discuions will shortly begin in Moscow looking towards early agreement on a comprehensive test ban treaty.Our hope must be tempered -- Our hopes must be tempered with the caution of history; but with our hopes go the hopes of all mankind.Second, to make clear our good faith and solemn convictions on this matter, I now declare that the United States does not propose to conduct nuclear tests in the atmosphere so long as other states do not do so.We will not -- We will not be the first to resume.Such a declaration is no substitute for a formal binding treaty, but I hope it will help us achieve one.Nor would such a treaty be a substitute for disarmament, but I hope it will help us achieve it.

Finally, my fellow Americans, let us examine our attitude towards peace and freedom here at home.The quality and spirit of our own society must justify and support our efforts abroad.We must show it in the dedication of our own lives -- as many of you who are graduating today will have an opportunity to do, by serving without pay in the Peace Corps abroad or in the proposed National Service Corps here at home.But wherever we are, we must all, in our daily lives, live up to the age-old faith that peace and freedom walk together.In too many of our cities today, the peace is not secure because freedom is incomplete.It is the responsibility of the executive branch at all levels of government -- local, State, and National -- to provide and protect that freedom for all of our citizens by all means within our authority.It is the responsibility of the legislative branch at all levels, wherever the authority is not now adequate, to make it adequate.And it is the responsibility of all citizens in all sections of this country to respect the rights of others and respect the law of the land.

All this -- All this is not unrelated to world peace.\"When a man\'s way[s] please the Lord,\" the Scriptures tell us, \"he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.\" And is not peace, in the last analysis, basically a matter of human rights: the right to live out our lives without fear of devastation; the right to breathe air as nature provided it; the right of future generations to a healthy existence? While we proceed to safeguard our national interests, let us also safeguard human interests.And the elimination of war and arms is clearly in the interest of both.No treaty, however much it may be to the advantage of all, however tightly it may be worded, can provide absolute security against the risks of deception and evasion.But it can, if it is sufficiently effective in its enforcement, and it is sufficiently in the interests of its signers, offer far more security and far fewer risks than an unabated, uncontrolled, unpredictable arms race.

The United States, as the world knows, will never start a war.We do not want a war.We do not now expect a war.This generation of Americans has already had enough -- more than enough -- of war and hate and oppreion.

各位老师、同学们：

大家上午好！漫漫高考长征路已经进入尾声了，再过九天，牵动人心的时刻就要到来了，大家就要迎来高考这场既满怀期待又心存担心的考试了。此时此刻，你的心情如何呢？是期待、紧张、兴奋、还是百感交集。

高三一年的奋斗，特别是高考前的点点滴滴，正是这所有的一切努力，将轻轻的把你推向了人生的又一个彼岸。有一位教授说了一句话：“高考，四分考实力，六分考心理。”就是说一个人心理调节成功与否，将会极大的影响到他的高考成绩。

一考定终身，分数就是硬道理！这句话从某种角度来说也是成立的。高考牵动着亿万家长的心，关系着学生一辈子的前途和幸福！在剩下的五天的时间里，重要的不再是知识掌握的多少，要弥补也是有限的。更重要的是大家的心态调节，能否把掌握的水平充分地临场发挥出来。高考考前同学们的心理调节是我们教师、家长和学生的共同关注！

现在距离高考只有九天，这是一个特殊阶段，许多同学开始惶惶不安，不知道应该做什么才好，甚至睡不好、吃不香。其实只有科学合理地安排好这九天的时间，才能有助于发挥正常应考水平。高考在即，如何缓解自己焦躁的心理？考前应做好哪几件事？考试期间有那些注意事项？

一、考前心理调节。十六个字：强化信心、优化情绪、进入状态、充分发挥。在临考的这几天里，努力做好以下十件事就可能达到调整心态十六个字的要求。

（1） 制定好作息时间计划及复习安排。把每天的复习功课、文体活动、

休息与睡眠的时间安排合理，防止复习忙忙乱乱，才能使生理节奏

感与心理节奏感增强。同学们千万要记住，无论你原计划在高考前

准备把功课复习三遍也好，五遍也罢，这时都应该停下来，对知识

结构进行梳理拾漏补缺，将重点的内容重点复习。

（2） 进入高考时间节奏。今年高考科目顺序和往年一样，要根据高考上

午开始时间与下午开始时间复习功课，例如按上午考试科目的高考

时间复习该学科，有助于进入高考状态，有助于充分发挥已掌握的

知识。

6月2日-4日距离高考3---5天：上午：6:30起床，洗漱，稍微活动一下。6:50吃早餐。早读、1节（7:55—8:50）、看书。2节复习理综或文综。（做题）午间休息吃饭休息。下午1节（14:00—14:50）看书、练习听力；2节：15:00—17:00复习英语、数学。以做题为主。休息，听听音乐，运动一下（适度）。晚上：19:30—22:00看书。休息。23:00准时入睡。

6月5日距离高考还有2天：上午：6:30起床，洗漱，稍微活动一下。6:50吃早餐。7:30—8:30看书。休息半个小时。9:00—11:30复习语文。因为第二天就要高考了，所以今天最好复习第二天的考试科目。午间休息 吃饭。午睡40分钟—1小时，根据自己的情况调整。下午：13:40—14:30看书。休息半个小时。15:00—17:00复习数学。以做题为主。休息，听听音乐，运动一下。晚上：19:30—22:00看书。休息。23:00准时入睡。

6月6日距离高考还有1天：放松，考前动员，看考场熟悉考场周围环境，包括卫生间等等。乘车路线、乘车时间、考虑堵车等因素。一般不安排时间学习。最后一天，晚上不要太早休息，防止睡不着，不要破坏平时的习惯。

（3） 每天以高考的心态做适量的卷子。有些考生认为自己已经做了好几

个月的卷子了，临考前十天八天不做，看看就行了，这可能会导致

考试时抓不住感觉，手生，影响发挥。

（4） 抓住最佳记忆时间。早晨起床后半小时以及晚上睡觉前半小时由于

不受前摄抑制、后摄抑制的影响，记忆效果最好。建议同学们可以

在早晨起床后半小时以及晚上睡觉前半小时复习最关键、最重要的

课程内容。

（5） 注意饮食卫生，防止胃肠疾病饮食是这个阶段不可忽视的问题，在

此期间，千万不要盲目吃大量的补品或者吃以前不习惯的东西，还

是吃以前一些清淡且熟悉的食品为佳，只要注意保持每日所需的营

养就好，平平淡淡才是真。建议同学们按照平时的饮食习惯吃饭就

可以，没有必要因加强营养去吃大鱼大肉。要注意饮食卫生，高考

前这三天，除了合理地调剂好一日三餐外，还要特别注意饮食卫生，

最好不要去卫生条件差的小摊点上就餐。生吃瓜果要用开水烫洗或

消毒；做凉拌菜时，调料中可加醋加蒜泥，既可杀菌又能增强食欲。

（6） 参加自己喜欢的文体活动。调节情绪、消除疲劳、养精蓄锐，以稳

定的、饱满的情绪迎战高考。但参加体育活动时，切忌剧烈运动，

防止受伤。最好不玩电脑和上网。因为玩电脑、上网容易上瘾，容

易在大脑形成优势兴奋灶，抑制已掌握知识的发挥。

（7） 调整心理状态。临考前，每天挺胸抬头快步走，有助于增强信心，

要相信自己的力量，不要迷信。许多同学在这个时候，会出现焦虑

不安、担心考不好等心理负担过重现象。如何调整好考前的心理状

态呢？一是要增加自信心。不要总是想着考不好，因为越是担心考

不好，造成心理紧张就越是考不好。此时要相信自己，尽力就好，

至于考试结果则不必再去多想。要以平常心对待，不要对自己太苛

求。二是多跟家长和同学交流谈心，从他们那里你会获得鼓励和帮

助；三是可以跑跑步、做做操，进行体育锻炼，这也是释放心理压

力的好办法。总之，考前要有一个乐观、自信、平和的心态。

（8） 调整睡眠，保证充分休息。在考前的三天里，要充分休息好，比平

时要多休息1--2个小时，把以前“欠”的觉补一补，把精神恢复过

来，是非常必要的。从现在开始就不要再\"开夜车\"了，根据自己的

情况把晚间睡眠调整到十一点。6月6日晚上切不可提前上床，否

则很容易辗转反侧难以入睡，使心绪烦躁不安，影响考试。

（9） 心平气和，防止烦躁。不想考试后的事，不与人争论问题，心平气

和地对待考前的一些事情。随着高考日的临近，不少考生开始想起考后的安排了，容易分散注意力，我们建议同学们在考前应集中心思，全力以赴迎考。考前有些紧张担心在所难免，考前有些轻度焦虑有助于发掘你的智力潜力。把自己的轻度考试焦虑看得太重，这才是影响考试的负面心态。

（10）增强信心。从现在开始不再做难题，不再做新的题目，以免自信心

受打击。强化自己已掌握的知识，增强信心，每一个人掌握知识的程度不一样，高考的目标就不一样。只要达到了自己能力所及的目标就是高考成功。临考前这几天，每天挺胸抬头快步走，有助于增强信心，要相信自己的力量，不要迷信。信心是高考成功的灵魂，只要你有良好的心态就能达到你力所能及的考试目标。

二、考试期间要求。

（1） 在考试期间要适当增加营养。饮食安排要做到食物多样，谷类

为主，要多吃蔬菜和水果，常吃奶类、豆类或豆制品（豆浆一

定要煮熟），经常吃适量的鱼、禽、蛋和瘦肉，吃清淡的饮食，不宜饮酒，要吃清洁、卫生、不变质的食物。要吃饱，要吃好，要清淡，要少吃脂肪和糖，要适当吃些杂粮，要及时补充水分。不宜用饮料代替白开水；不宜贪凉；不宜午睡时间过久；不宜

节食；不宜室内外温差过大；不宜在风口上猛吹。

（2） 要认真遵守学校的各项纪律求。入住酒店要遵守作息时间安

排，讲文明、守纪律、重安全，认真对待每一场考试。

（3） 要消除不必要的烦恼焦虑，要保持愉快乐观的情绪。要学会

“关门”。学会关紧“昨天”和“明天”这两扇门，过好每一

个“今天”，既不对昨天耿耿于怀，也不对将来的事忧心忡忡。

（4） 要具备信心专心细心恒心——这是高考成功的保证。

同学们，竞赛的胜负不仅是技术水平的较量，而且是心理素质的较量，心理素质的好坏，直接影响竞技水平的发挥。考试也是如此，要在考试中保持最佳的心理状态，要具备“四心”：

信心：有它不一定能赢，没它一定会输。信心是成功的精神支柱，有信心的人有以下表现：

要充满自信，做到战略上藐视困难，战术上重视困难。胸有成竹，从容不迫，学习生活有规律。考前要千方百计调整好生物钟，使自已的兴奋点和考试时间同步。信心在考场中的表现，是遇到难题，gwytest.com静自若，沉着应考。

专心：头脑清醒、精力集中的前提。有的同学考前存在私心杂念，有畏惧心理，这是可以理解的。但一上考场，则必须排除一切干扰，专心致志、净化精神。只有专心致志才能保持头脑清醒，才能感知深刻、积极思维，才能处于最佳心理和生理状态。

细心：别因一两分名落孙山。每次评卷总结，老师们都要谈到考生的过失性失分，有的忘填小空，有的漏掉小题，有的忘了一页，造成不应有的损失。有的人就因为这关键的一两分而名落孙山。除做题外，有的考生还粗心到忘带准考证、考试必需品等，结果一上考场就手忙脚乱，影响考试。克服粗心，必须细心。

第一、考前准备要细心。要做好思想和物质准备。考前考后要检查准

考证、钢笔及其它文具是否带齐，还要估计一下出现突发事件怎么办？各种情况都要考虑周全，做到有备无患。不管是使用圆珠笔或是钢笔，都要准备两支；还有画图形和涂机读卡的铅笔、尺子、橡皮、圆规等文具也都要充分准备，做到有备无患。特别要指出的是铅笔一定要买正牌2B的，这是最重要的。 第

二、考试时做题要细心。做题前先填考号、姓名，将试题浏览一遍，

做到心中有数。做题时要先易后难。每道题都要细心、认真地研究。要学会“会做求全对，稳做中档题，一分不浪费。”切忌漏题，要注意试卷的正面和背面，不要漏掉背面的题。要注意单页试卷，按要求填好机读卡。

第三、要有时间观念，充分利用有效时间。不应迟到，不宜早退，要

做到三个环节：通览全卷，全面解答，校对复查，这样就可以使自己不失掉该得的分数。

第四、要认真熟悉考试环境。熟悉的环境，往往有助于启发思维，生

疏的环境则阻碍思维。考场一般都不是自己的“老窝”，有必要熟悉自己的考室、位子。

做到细心的口诀：通览全试卷，填好号和名；审题要仔细，题意要弄清，遇到拦路虎，不妨绕道行；细中求速度，快中不忘稳；不争交头卷，检查要认真。

恒心：出师不利也要坚持到最后一秒。参加考试，不可能一帆风顺。有的人可能出师不利，首战受挫，第一道题就不会做或第一科就考得不够理想，有的人可能中途受阻。面对这种情况，容易产生消极情绪，而消极情绪对以后各科的考试极为不利。它会分散注意力、影响记忆、遏制思维、降低效率。这就需要冷静下来，认真总结失败的原因，尽快把注意力转移到下一门考试中，不必再对前者耿耿于怀。要提得起，放得下。考试期间做到三不：不同别人对答案，不讨论不会做的题，不找老师解题。决不能一失败就灰心丧气，要有恒心，要有锲而不舍的精神，不管前面的学科考得如何，都坚持考到最后一科，最后一秒。

同学们，高考已经一天天的逼近了。现在已是别无选择，只能全力以赴向自己的目标冲刺！这时候，很多知识的积累都已经定型，但心理的波动往往会影响你的复习和考试。所以首先要学会放松，放松的目的就是能够有一种平常心去面对一切，不要患得患失。放松的另一个目的是要让相信自己，不止要相信自己的实力，更要相信自己的运气。

如果前一个阶段复习效果不大理想，更别慌。成绩不好，不外乎状态不好，哪个基础点不扎实，哪里没复习够这几个原因。这样一来，心态也得到了很好的调节。在这一段最紧张的日子里，不要给自己太多的压力，要放松，只要是努力了即使失败了也没有关系，只要发挥出自己的水平就好。要让自己的心平静下来,要能够以一种坦然的心态去面对高考，面对人生。能够在坦然与自信中，走过高考的风风雨雨。为自己的高中生涯画上一个圆满的句号。

扬起风帆，未来起航

——机电学院2015年学生毕业典礼成功举办

六月的阳光碎金似的洒在蔓萝青青的长廊下，又是一年毕业季。又是那么一群满携着梦想的年轻人，就将在2015年的这个夏天离开这四年的时光、这熟悉的校园，为了给这些将离的年轻人四年难舍的大学生活画下完美而具有纪念意义的句号，2015年六月五日下午五点五十分机电学院团总支学生会在音乐广场主办了机电学院2015年学生毕业典礼。出席本次典礼的嘉宾有皖西学院党委委员、副校长孔敏、机电学院院长张晓东、机电学院副院长李贤志、机电学院副院长、党总支副书记罗伟，机电学院副处级组织员杨青，11级各专业辅导员。本次典礼由机电学院党支部书记程志勇主持进行。

庄严地国歌宣告着典礼的开始，在这意义特殊的一刻，全场气氛格外严肃。典礼中机电学院院长张晓东为即将毕业的同学们做了典礼致辞，他首先诚挚地向2015届毕业生表示了祝贺，也向11级各辅导员、老师和领导表示了积极地慰问。在致辞中，他满怀信心表达了对毕业生们的未来充满着美好的期望并希望毕业生们在以后的生活与工作之中能够保持心胸开阔、志存高远，最后他表示欣慰同学们高尚品德的养成，也感谢同学们为学院发展做出的巨大贡献。在张院长的致辞完毕后，场下同学们报以热烈的掌声与微笑。

在此次典礼里，11级教师代表王文心副教授对11级学生四年大学学习生活美好的回忆深感怀念地进行了讲述，与此同时毕业生代表王胜男也发表了她的毕业感言，她向在座嘉宾及观众表达了自己对大学生活浓浓的不舍与毕业后即将走入社会的欣喜，引起了场下毕业生观众深深的共鸣，热烈的掌声充满着典礼现场。

几近典礼尾声，皖西学院党委委员、副校长孔敏满怀深情地向毕业生们说出了他的寄语与叮嘱。他说同学们是皖西学院发展的见证，他积极地激励毕业生笑面人生与未来生活，要自信面对困难，勇担责任并且保持理解与宽容，他最后充满热情地祝福机电学院毕业生们前程似锦，表达了他最诚挚地感情。随后典礼进行了为优秀毕业生代表授予毕业证书仪式，主持人机电学院党支部书记程志勇最后向毕业生表示了祝福、期望并宣布了典礼的结束。

关于在全市中小学

开展毕业典礼及开学典礼教育活动的通知 各镇（街）教委（教育工作站）、初中、直属学校、有关小学：

为创新形式加强青少年学生的思想道德教育，经研究决定，在全市中小学广泛开展毕业典礼及开学典礼教育活动。现将有关要求通知如下：

一、明确目的，让典礼富有深刻的教育意义

毕业典礼是学校为完成各学段学习生涯的学生，举行的离校仪式，是对学生进行教育的重要契机。举行毕业典礼的目的是让学生铭记小学、中学阶段学习、生活的美好时光，给毕业生的校园情、师生情、同学情打下深刻烙印；让学生铭记母校，常怀思念，激发学生爱校荣校的情怀，关注和支持母校的发展；也是对学生进行一次全新的人生教育，理想前途教育，感恩教育。开学典礼是新学期开始举行的仪式，目的是欢迎新同学，使来到陌生学习环境的新同学更快的融入新的环境，为学生进入正常的学习、生活打下基础。各学校要充分认识活动的意义，利用毕业生考试结束后、新生开学前的时间，做好充分的准备工作。

二、创新形式，把典礼办成终生难忘的活动

要开阔思路，创新形式，让典礼教育活动真正成为蓬莱的德育特色活动。各学校要结合自身实际，采取多种形式开展活动，吸引学生普遍参与，使活动成为学生自我教育、自我提高的过程。毕业典礼活动中，要组织毕业生开展一些有意义的活动，如“我为学校赠本书”活动等。可以邀请毕业生家长参加活动，取得家长对学校的支持。活动要以爱的展示和升华为主线，让学生在参与活动的过程中接受教育、得到锻炼、受到熏陶。让广大师生在感动中激励自己，在感动中升华情感，在感动中学会感恩。

三、精心组织，把典礼办得隆重而有实效 各学校要高度重视毕业典礼及开学典礼活动，并把这一活动作为学校德育工作的重要内容，使之制度化，常态化。要成立领导组织和工作组织，周密策划，制定具体活动方案，精心组织，确保典礼教育活动扎实有效，不流于形式，让典礼真正成为学生人生中一次具有特殊意义的教育活动。

学校要及时将活动的宣传与信息上报教育局基础教育科，活动开展情况将列入学校年度工作考核体系。

大家好！

今天，是学前班小朋友难忘的日子，因为你们即将结束幼儿园三年的学习和生活，即将成为一名小学生，我为你们感到高兴和自豪，在为你们举办毕业典礼的这个特殊日子，看着你们的成长，作为园长，心里有说不出的高兴，也有说不出的不舍。

今天一天我学着不说“不”：

D教师来办公室请假：“尤园长，今天的政治学习我能请假吗？我想去医院拿药。”我回答：“今天的会议时间不长，并且要讨论庆祝儿童节的工作。”D教师得到这个提示后说：“那我散了会再去，反正医院药房不关门。”——用提示代替“不”

Z教师：“园长，今天的学习能请假吗？今天老家有顿喜酒推不掉。”我回答：“是啊，有的事情总不能回绝，那先参加开会等分组讨论时再去吧。”——用“是”代替“不”

K教师：“园长，今天的政治学习我能请假吗？我想陪妈妈去医院看病。”我说：“你妈妈生病要及时看，问题是今天的会议比较重要，你看怎么办呢？”K老师感受到了我的共情和理解，说：“我让我爱人先陪她去，散了会我再去。”我带着赞许的微笑点头，李教师也露出得到理解的微笑。——接受教师的感受后，简单描述回绝的原因。

事有凑巧，散会后去领导办公室办事，也遇一位教师请假：“这两天进入复习阶段，我们六年级的技能科停课了，我想去将驾驶的课程学完。本来是暑假的计划，因完成学校的合唱任务冲掉了。”

领导回答：“牺牲暑假完成中心任务精神可嘉，可学校这么多教师如果批了你去学驾驶其他老师会怎么看？特别是以前连去考试都没有批假的老师一定有想法，还有那些家长听说上班时间老师学驾驶了又会怎么想？”那位教师犹豫半天后：“那我还是等到放假再去吧。”

很多时候，虽然教师的要求实为不能而为之，但却经过了一定的考虑，常常将理由想得较充分后才鼓足勇气来园长室，如果用“不行”、“不可以”直截了当地加以回绝，老师在难堪之后更多的是产生反感。而如果先是得到领导的共情或感受认可、理由确认，再听到领导有一个很充分的拒绝理由。本就明事理的教师会主动地思考自己的要求是不是过分，同时会自己找到更好的解决问题的办法。

今天非常高兴，我能慎重拒绝老师的要求，学会不说“不”了。
