Destruction or Succe Ernest Miller Hemingway, a famous American novelist, his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. He enlisted with the world War Ⅰambulance drivers, but he was seriously wounded and returned home. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms. Also he was presented at the World War Ⅱand get injured. The Old man and the Seais Hemingway’s final full-length work published during his lifetime, written in 1951 in Cuba.He wrote the draft of the book in eight weeks, and felt quite satisfied with it.And in May 1953, the novel received the Pulitzer Price and was specifically cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.When Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize, it was for \"his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style.Shortly after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway went on safari to Africa, where he was almost killed in two succeive plane crashes that left him in pain or ill health for much of his remaining life. Finally, on July 2, 1961, Hemingway committed suicide.

The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of a battle between an aging, experienced fisherman, Santiago, and a large marlin. The story opens with Santiago having gone 84 days without catching a fish, and suffering the worst unluckine. He is so unfortunate that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with him.But the boy still visits Santiago’s shack each night, and takes good care of him.Santiago ventures again, far out into the Gulf Stream. On the eighty-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago has his bait taken by a big fish that he is sure is a marlin.Though wounded by the struggle and in pain, Santiago exprees a compaionate appreciation for his adversary, often referring to him as a brother. On the third day, Santiago worn out and almost delirious uses all his remaining strength to pull the fish onto its side and stab the marlin with a harpoon.Santiago straps the marlin to the side of his skiff and heads home.On his way in to shore, sharks attacked him.He fights against them bravely, not only the sharks, but nature,”salao” and life.In the end,Santiago returns home exhaustedly, though there is only the fish’s skeleton left. The scene that Santiago fights against the sharks still keeps me alive. What he said that “Man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” always appears in my mind. And I believe this sentence has encouraged a lot of people to face the difficulties and to deal with them bravely. To be honest, when I saw the sentence at the first time, I cannot agree it.Why a man can be destroyed but not defeated? I think life is the most important thing in our life; men cannot give up their lives easily. And failure is quite common in our daily life, why a man will choose to be destroyed instead of to be defeated? However in that condition, it is easy to understand the reason.Because Santiago is regarded as a failure, because he is suffering the worst misfortune, because he is not trusted be others, he needs a challenge to prove himself. As a result, he decides to put the life to wrestle in such an extreme situation. This is miserable story, it describes a miserable hero. After reading the novel, I am confused that why the author did not let Santiago win in the end.The story of the old man symbolizes the in destructible spirit of human beings. At the end of the story, the old man said,” They beat me, Manolin. They truly beat me.” I can get the feeling that he had, how disappointed, how desperate, and how sad.In the reality, Santiago is a failure, but he succeeds in the spirit. His insistent struggle shows the dignity of human beings. In a way, victory is not important in the novel. What makes me admire is that Santiago dares to break down all the barriers over and over again. What he brings to all of us is a great confidence, a strong spirit.I have learned a lot from the book, especially the attitude towards failure and succe.Wearenotlimitedbytheplaceofourbirth, thecolor ofourskin, thecreedofourculture, theflagofourcountryor the circumstancesofour past.Weare onlylimited by the magnitudeofourvision, theextentofourfaithandthevastne ofourwillingnetotakeaction. If no one believes in you, then believe in yourself and as long as you live. When no one else will give you the encouragement that you so long for, then take hold of the podium of your own heart and encourage yourself.Failure is not horrible; the most horrible thing is giving in to the failure. What is the hero? In my opinion, the real hero will face the trouble bravely, will challenge it, will beat it, and will be a better man.The author also suffered a lot in his life, war, physical illne and mental illne.Although he committed suicide, he did deal with the trouble fearlely. Our life is just like the venture of the old man, we will meet a great number of difficulties. However, what we should do is put a bold front on them. Please remember we will be stronger if we fight against them, even though we fail in the end.In a word, this book will put you in touch with the hidden seeds of your succe and mobilize you to take action. It awakens your collective consciousne and faces you with your own greatne, with your higher miion.

(The Old Man and the Sea)英文书评(book reviews)

然而这时却遇上了鲨鱼(a shark),老人与鲨鱼进行了殊死搏斗(put up a good fight),结果大马林鱼被鲨鱼吃光了,老人最后拖回只剩下一副光秃秃bald的鱼骨架(a fish skeleton)和一身(all over the body)的伤。

一种注意写实(writing or painting realistically),有着动人的情节(plot);另一种则侧重(to lay special emphasis on)道德说教,充满象征(badge)的意义。

Translation:(book reviews)

This book tells us a story about a Cuban old man.He went fishing at sea on his own. After more than eighty four days , he fished an extremely large fish. The old man hadn’t ever seen such a big fish that was two meters longer than his boat. The vigor of fish was sostrong that it dragged the boat drifting for two days.During the two days, the old man experienced the difficulties that he had never met with. Finally,he stabbed it and tied the fish on the bow. However,he came acro a shark. Then, the old man put up a good fight with a shark. As a result, the fish was eaten by the shark. So,the old man carried a bald fish skeleton and being hurt all over the body to reach home. But in the end, he attained admiration by people.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway\'s most immortal

works. The book may very well become one of the true claics of this generation.Certainly, Ernest Hemingway\'s short novel is proceed exact , well united time and places and it’s style of writing is very deep.In addition, as the most great works, his novel contains not only one meaning.First of all, this is an exciting tragedy adventure story.Because I see a picture how an old man killed the large fish and fought a shark via his wisdom.Furthermore, it’s also a fable that describes a spirit strength ------ how a person achieved succe from a bad envirnoment.Lastly, the story implied a religious metaphor as well. The author added some Christian symbols and figure of speech inconspicuously.

So, in my opinion, this novel tells not only a moving plot, but also lays special emphasis on moral meanings that are full of the symbol of badge. The spirit that the old man poeed impreed me deeply.meaning

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Miller Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961), the author of the The Old Man and the Sea, was born in Oak Park, America.Actually, Hemingway was not just an author, he was also considered to be one of the most famous novelists of the 20th century. He had strong interest in writing, so he wrote novels at the same time.In his later years in Idaho Ketchum\'s home committed suicide.Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954..Many of his works are considered claics of American literature.Hemingway\'s emotional experience was complicated that he has married four times. He was a representative figure in the United States \"lost generation\" The life, world and society of his works have shown a feeling of confusion and uncertainty.

The main content of this book is that the old fisherman Santiago doesn’t catch any fish for 84 days.At first, a boy named Manolin follows him .However after forty days without catching a fish, the child is arranged by their parents to another boat up because they think the old man is unlucky. Thus on the eighty-fifth day, He unexpectedly caught a marlin even bigger than the boat.Santiago makes the fish pulling his skiff. Two days and two nights pa in this manner, during which the old man bears the tension of the line with his body.On the third day, the fish begins to circle the skiff. Thus Santiago begins the fight between the sharks and himself. Finally reaching the shore before dawn on the next day, Santiago struggles on the way to his shack, carrying the heavy mast on his shoulder.Once home, he goes to his bed and falls into a deep sleep.A group of fishermen gather the next day around the boat where the fish\'s skeleton is still attached.Tourists at the nearby café mistakenly take it for a shark.Manolin, worried during the old man\'s endeavor, cries upon finding him safe asleep. The boy brings him newspapers and coffee. When the old man wakes, they promise to fish together once again.Upon his return to sleep, Santiago dreams of his youth—of lions on an African beach.

The words that inspired me most in this article maybe is the “Man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeat.” This is Santiago’s living faith, and

also the idea that the author wanted to expre in The Old Man and the Sea.The old man never gets one fish during 84 days, but he never thinks about giving up.He just still struggles for the brief he used to hold.Yes, at last, he failed, but we can’t deny he is a powerhouse in the spirit. And in our real lives, there are all kinds of difficulties that we need to deal with. Some people choose escape, because they think they can’t overcome them. They scared. But for me, I like it.I think the problems are good for me.Every time I surmount it, I enjoy that kind of achievability.I enjoy the proce I solving the problems, and this can be the precious experience in my lives. But sometimes the problems may be harder than our imaginations; we try all kinds of ways to solve them but still failed, so, at this time, we need to learn the old man’s spirit.I think the live is not complete without fail and pain. It’s impoible that everything goes smoothly in our lives. We can grow up only if we experience the pain and harm.Just like choice. We face all kinds of choices every day, and sometimes we don\'t know how to choose or what we need to choose. In fact, we can’t choose, that’s because we have already had something we really want in our heart, so we don’t need to choose.

Santiago teach me what is courage, and teach me insist and never say never.Actually, that reminds me of a short video I watched in the high school.It\'s a inspirational video.I still remember the first time I watched it, I cried. This video is about a game named “death crawl”.A group is practicing so that they have enough energy in the football game. Now, at this time I don’t want to talk about too much about this video, I just want to say something about faith, insistence and potential. In our lives, sometimes we didn’t do something well, we may say, well, I’ve already tried my best.We may think it’s OK, that is enough. The standard we give to ourselves is too low, but the interesting thing is, we always ask other people to be excellent, and the standard we give to other is so high. When we don’t do it well, we say we’ve already tried our best, but we never strain every never. The reason why we haven’t been succeful is we don’t have aims, don’t have a real dream, we are not confident, don’t have a great coach, and don’t know how much the potential we have.We all read this book, The Old Man and the Sea, but why we didn\'t learn the spirit in it? Compared to Santiago, the condition we have is so great nowadays, but we become

more and more frail, especially our teenagers. Most of them always say they don’t believe something at all, and write those inactive or negative words in their blog, I just wonder why they become so negative. This is the most beautiful time in a whole life, we need to treasure it, love it.An old man can struggle for 2 days and 2 nights, but look at us, as the teenagers, why we can’t?“Lost generation”? I think we just don’t know how much, how better we can do.Potential.Everyone’s potential is infinite. We didn’t do well, that’s because we told ourselves we can’t do it in advance.Just because we don\'t believe ourselves, so we can’t do anything.

In my opinion, when we face the problems, maybe the best way we can do is just pretend to be someone else.I think for Santiago, maybe at that time, he pretended himself as a strong man, maybe Schwarzenegger. And then, he really made it.He thought he was Schwarzenegger, so he got a lot of power and energy, so he can catch the fish, and fight with so many sharks, and finally, went back to home.During the trip, that is the faith supports him to go all the way to the coast.

Our life is not plain sailing and it is constituted by the difficulties and problems. The solution to the problem is not only the witne of our growth but also make us more mature. In order to make our life much more meaningful, let us face the challenges of life bravely.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway\'s most enduring works and may very well become one of the true claics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world.

Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers.Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A

Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impreion on me.The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway\'s most enduring works.Told in language of great simplicity and power,it is the story of an old Cuban

fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal——a relentle, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts,in strikingly contemporary style, the claic thene of courage in the face of defeat,of personal triumph won from los.Written in 1952,this hugely

succefully novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a huge part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Old Man and the Sea may very well become one of the true claics of this generation.Certainly, the qualities of Ernest Hemingway\'s short novel are those which we aociate with many great stories of the past: near perfection of form within the limitations of its subject matter, restraint of treatment, regard for the unities of time and place, and evocative simplicity of style. Also, like most great stories, it can be read on more than one level of meaning. On one it is an exciting but tragic adventure story.Sustained by the pride of his calling, the only pride he has left, a broken old fisherman ventures far out into the Gulf Stream and there hooks the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. Then, alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he is forced into a losing battle with marauding sharks; they leave him nothing but the skeleton of his catch. On another level the book is a fable of the unconquerable spirit of man, a creature capable of snatching spiritual victory from circumstances of disaster and material defeat. On still another it is a parable of religious significance, its theme supported by the writer\'s unobtrusive handling of Christian symbols and metaphors.Like Coleridge\'s Ancient Mariner,

Hemingway\'s Cuban fisherman is a character allowing the imagination of his creator to operate simultaneously in two different worlds of meaning and value, the one real and dramatic, the other moral and devotionally symbolic.

Abstract

The Old Man and the Sea tells the frustrated experience that the old fisherman fishes in the course. The theme is deep, and it is a song of praise of heroism.“But man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated” has been the claic saying and the old man also has been the most typical and the most representative of the Hemingway’s “tough guy”.When Hemingway talked about the succeful factors later, the little boy was mentioned in the same breath with the old man.

This paper starts with the details and it is divided into two main parts to discu the indispensable roles of the little boy in the novel. It is him who helps to perform the theme of “grace under preure”: during 40 days, the old man with the little boy went to fish but without taking a fish, when his situation was getting worse step by step, the little boy’s leaving was the heavy preure that achieved the extreme stern for certain. However , it was so “heavy preure” that his manner was graceful when the old man faced afterwards defeat and his optimistic, generous life attitude was worthy tasting by people carefully; it is him who plays the role of leading, inspiring to the readers, and increasing the appeal of the work, enriching the content of the work: although the little boy appears only at the beginning and the ending in the novel, there is nothing in his inner state but the old man, so his attitude and emotions towards the old man affects the readers’ emotions for the old man quietly and gradually. And it is unavoidable that his inner feeling leads and impacts the readers’ emotions.

Key words: roles; the little boy; the old man; grace under preure。

the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway\'s most enduring works and may very well become one of the true claics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world.Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers.Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impreion on me.

I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.

Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.

My first impreion of this story was from screen.

It\'s long long ago, maybe before I can read english books.I don\'t remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impreed by the music, the scenery and the costume.I was very favor of a section of music in its balls.It\'s pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird.Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine, though I didn\'t think she\'s beautiful. But she\'s smart. However, I didn\'t pay much attention to the plot.I thought it\'s so long that it made me impatient and bored.By now, I haven\'t read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either.I owe it to my prejudice.

In fact, I didn\'t understand the story at that time.I didn\'t know why it called Pride and Prejudice.Of course someone was pride, but I didn\'t find where\' s the prejudice.I thought it\'s normal, the way people treated each other in that.I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it.I\'m a prejudiced person so I can\'t find where\'s wrong.I merely like to do the things I like.Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

The novel description is one year near sixty years of age senior fisherman, when alone goes to sea in one fishing, fished one big fish, actually did not pull. The senior fisherman socialized several days after the fish, only then discovered this was the big marlin which one surpaed the oneself fishing boat several fold, although knew perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up.Afterwards and further because in the big marlin wound fish fishy smell brought in several crowds of shark fish snatches the food, but the old person still did not hope like this to give up, finally highlighted encircles tightly, returned to the big fish belt the fishing port, lets other fishermen not admire already.

When I read \" the senior fisherman think: Here to the seacoast really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fish in a farther place...\" When, I extremely admire this senior fisherman, because he by now already projected on some fish, but he had not settled to the present situation, but was approaches the bigger goal advance.Again has a look us, usually meets one slightly is difficult, we all complain inceantly. We will be the motherland future, will be supposed to like this old person same mind lofty aspiration, will even better pursue even better, the bigger goal.

When I read \" the big marlin start fast to gather round the young fishing boat hover, twined the cable on the mast, the old person right hand lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did utmost throws to its heart, one wail ended the big fish\'s life, it was static static floats on the water surface...\" When, my heart also liked together the big stone falls.I extremely admire old person that kind do not dread, the relentle spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficultly above.Just because had this kind of spirit, the senior fisherman only then achieved this life and death contest succe. We also must study senior fisherman\'s spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty, only then can obtain succefully

Book Review on The Old Man And The Sea

“A man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”These two sentences are so familiar to us.It’s spoken by Santiago, the hero of The Old Man And The Sea.When I first read this book in Grade 5, I was shocked by his brave and staunch spirit.

This book tells us a story about an old fisherman called Santiago. He had been fishing 84 days without catching any fish at all. However, he made his mind to get a big fish.In the 85th day, after a long fighting, heeventually caught a big Marlin fish, which will be an honor to him.Unluckily, several sharks came to the boat and ate the dead fish.Although Santiago struggled to fight with them, tired out, they ate it at last.In the end, Santiago carried the shell of his Marlin fish home.

This book tells the story with the time order, using a unique tough style. It perfectly shows the hero Santiago’s strong mind with aconciseplot and lively words. On the other hand, Hemingway tried harder to describe the big body of the Marlin fish and the fiercene of the sharks. It strees his character in return. In my opinion, this book is not famous for its themes, but also for its writing style, a kind of tough style.

The brave fisherman Santiago is also an image to reflect the author himself.Hemingway has attended the world war and got injured several times. So this book is like an autobiography of him.In my opinion, Hemingway and his hero Santiago represent the kind of man, who has full energy to overcome any obstacles, brave spirit to respond to any challenge and a strong mind never to give up.

Sometimes life is like a round of push and pull. The winner will never be the weak or the timid, it belongs to the hero.Theobstacles in your life are like the big Marlin fish and the huge sharks. It is actually tough and endle. But try not being afraid and never give up.Each obstacle is a kind of challenge, thus our life is colorful.Even if they defeat

you, don’t step back.Think about Santiago’s words “A man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” You will eventually defeat your enemy one day.

作业:The Old Man and the Sea

I had read this novel when I was in middle school.I came acro it in a library and after opening the book I continued reading till the last page. It’s amazing that there should be such a wonderful story.Later, I learned some parts of the story from our Chinese book and the teacher told us to try to feel something that the author was expreing. Then, I became confused for all I noticed was the story itself.

Now I read the novel again, but in English.I have been familiar with the plot and many details in the story, and I could still recognize them while reading them in English. The story goes like this: there’s an old man in Cuba named Santiago who was a fisherman. He had been fishing hard in the Gulf Stream for 84 days but got nothing. In the previous days a boy named Manolin was fallowing him as a company, but the kind boy was force to leave the old man by his parents who thought that the old man was unlucky. However, Santiago continued to go fishing alone in the eighty-fifth day.The boy cared about him and prepared things for him.

The old man left the land early in the morning and in this very day his luck finally came—a large marlin bit his bait and couldn’t escape. But the fish was so big and heavy that it pulled the skiff or a little ship as far as it could do.The old man was very excited and determined to defeat it.So they started a battle which lasted for days and nights.First the fish was in charge, it swam fast with great strength and the old man could only pull the rope with great efforts. When the old man was tired he ate bonito or dolphin to keep strong and he started to talk to himself so that he would not feel weak in the mind. The marlin grew tired gradually and it began to circle. The old man knew that he was to have the fish.He burnt all his energy to pull the rope while the fish was circling under the water. The fish came nearer and nearer to his skiff, and then the old man hit the fish with a harpoon and finally got it.The fish was huge and it was longer than his skiff. He tight it alongside the skiff with ropes and lay down in the stern to have a rest.

However, on the way back the blood from the scar of the fish speared in the sea water and then the sharks came. The old man was not afraid and used every weapon to fight with them. There were five or six times of attacking from those sharks and each time they ate lots of fine meat from the marlin. The old man fought again and again to protect his fish and used harpoon, oar, knife, rudder and so on to beat the sharks. They fought all the way back home and in the end the old man gave it up because the fish was almost eaten up and he was exhausted.

The old man finally came back after sailing out for so far and so long a time.It was deep in the night; he left the skiff and the fish and went to bed.In his dream, he saw lions playing on the beach in the coast of Africa. The story ended.

It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat.A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.

In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to have symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea.He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate.He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding.

hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face.He behaved like a real man, a tough man. That’s what’s most important in a battle.

Hemingway is famous for his special writing style and skills. His words are short but tough, and people describe this as “telegraph style”.And from this typical work of his I can easily find out something worth noticing.I like the first paragraph very much because it reads so natural and attracting and it will lead you into the situation as soon as poible.

It writes: “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.In the first forty days a boy had been with him.But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.”

Some features can be seen that verbs and nouns are used mostly, but not adjectives. This will make the novel clean and hard like bones and easy to understand.

The novel is not long and not difficult to read in English, and I think we can learn to be tough like Santiago when facing with hard times in our life, which is the best solution we should choose in a bad situation.

Love actually

Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece written by a British writer named Jane Austen. In the book, she expreed the relationship between love and marriage in a humorous way and showed different attitudes toward marriage by depicting several young women of different descent, economic position and horizon of knowledge.

The story talks about four marriages which occurred in Britain in the 19th century. And the most important among them are protagonists Elizabeth and Darcy.Elizabeth is pretty and smart. As for love and marriage, she has her own strong principle that she won\'t be confused by money and status but to insist on looking for true love. While Darcy is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Therefore, she has a prejudice against him.Pride and prejudice lead to the unpleasent and misunderstanding between them. However, after clarification of various matters , they gradually fall in love and conclude the happy marriage.

In the book, Jane clearly explained that it is wrong to get married for the property, money and status. She emphasized the

important of the ideal marriage and regarded men and women\'s emotions as the foundation stone.

As far as I am concerned, I have learned two things from the book,o n the one hand, pride and prejudice are very common weakne among us, therefore, everyone can easily driven by their own subjective feelings and misunderstanding of others.Only in-depth understanding can we know a person\'s inner world. On the other hand, Elizabeth insists on her emotions and isn\'t confused by money and status, pursues her love bravely.Although we have different pursuits, I hope I can carry on like her. After all, uphold the dream is a happy thing.

The book review of Pride and Prejudice

管宁

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813.The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with iues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England.

After reading this book, I find that its name, Pride and Prejudice, is quite meaningful. Both the pride and prejudice are caused by money and social hierarchy.Jane reflected the reality of society by drawing the characters of specific person as well as the tongue they used when they speak. Some people think that only Mr.Darcy was proud and only Elizabeth had prejudice towards other else. But I hold the different opinion.

When a wealthy young bachelor, Bingley, moving into Netherfield Park in the neighborhood of the Bennet family, he is soon well-received because of his income of 5000 a year and poibility of marrying one of the young girls in the town. It’s quite easy to see the whole society was chasing down money and fame. That is a good background that the writer succefully set, making the following things sound reasonable.

The Bennets\' cousin Mr Collins, a clergyman, was proud of his rich patrone, the noble Lady Catherine de Bourgh. After being refused by Elizabeth of the offer of marriage, Mr Collins soon recovered and promptly became engaged to Elizabeth\'s close friend who pointed out that Mr Collins is a good, respectful, well-employed man which is absolutely untrue. How eager was she to have financial security by marrying a, what to say, kind of rich and powerful husband. We wonder whether the society had real love.

When Elizabeth went to visit her married girlfriend Charlotte and Mr Collins, she was to meet Mr.Darcy more frequently.Mr Darcy finds himself, again, attracted to Elizabeth and proposes to her. While talking to each other, Elizabeth charged him with pride, with destroying her sister\'s happine, with his disgraceful treatment of Mr Wickham, and with having conducted himself in an ungentlemanly manner. All the reasons of her prejudice towards Darcy were shown in no other. However, after reading the letter sent to clear himself by Mr.Darcy, Elizabeth came to acknowledge the truth of Mr Darcy\'s aertions.Later, Elizabeth realized what a kind, amiable and considerate person Mr.Darcy was little by little.

While facing the unreasonable order from Lady Catherine de Bourgh of never marrying her nephew, Elizabeth refused to low her head, believing that everyone had right to chase their own happine. However, lady Catherine believed her to be too low born for her nephew, Mr Darcy, upon hearing this, realized that Elizabeth\'s opinion of him may have changed and again proposes. We are never too surprised to find that the elegant noble lady Catherine who represented the highest cla of Britain was so arrogant under such a mammonish society.

But the combination of Darcy and Elizabeth proved that after so many generations living in such a material society and being told forever marrying to money and fame, the true love from the heart

and soul has not perished from the earth.

The fate of the tragedy

“Hamlet” is a claical representative work of Shakespeare. It was admired for centuries.Until now, still shocking the hearts of the people. But not only is all this not the role of plot and excellent literary skills, but also the problem that it reflected. To a large level, it describes an extremely primitive tragedy, human tragedy. The play\'s characters have different status and distinctive character, but they all suffered from the ravages of the same thing, which is at the mercy of their own desires. And it is called the fate of the cage.

Hamlet is the central figure of the tragedy, although was the prince, but he accepted the influence of new ideas from childhood, forming a new ideal of life and social ideals. His life is full of good hope. But his humanistic ideals were attacked by the relentle reality. His father was killed, and his mother married with the murder. When Hamlet was whelmed in the bereavement of losing his father, he once

questioned: “Survival or destruction, this is a problem deserving of consideration”.Whether to rise vigorously or go downhill? Because of sorrow and oppreion, the flame of hatred finally simmered in the heart of Hamlet and he chose revenge.

It can be said that Hamlet had a more profound understanding to life. The past he only turned a blind eye to it all.Now the harsh reality forced him to face all this.He had a premonition that he had been dragged into the inevitable fate of a tragedy. He must to kill his uncle, then became one for revenge who can not shirk his life\'s miion. And his enemy is today\'s king, to kill him, certainly not an easy task, but no matter how difficult, He must do.Plot and the killing are contrary to the nature of Hamlet kind of innocence, but his miion of revenge neceary.Bearing a heavy revenge miion, he was filled with hatred, darkne, and he was unable to extricate himself into the aby of suffering. As if Shakespeare used such words as the way revealing the terrible hatred, which is a double-edged sword, a sharp, double-edged sword also painted the poison. The person using it as if he sold the soul to the devil, and then stab someone in the irrational, but also inevitably makes their own black and blue.Shakespeare used this text reminding people that the sword is cold and bloodcurdling.Hatred double-edged sword, it is much more sensible to give up it than to pick up it.

This may be the eternal charm of Hamlet.

Sir Walter Scott 评论

READ again, and for the third time at least, Mi Austen\'s very finely written novel of \"Pride and Prejudice.\" That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. The big bow-wow strain I can do myself like any now going; but the exquisite touch, which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting, from the truth of the description and the sentiment, is denied to me.—From \"The Journal of Sir Walter Scott,\" March, 1826.

We bestow no mean compliment upon the author of \"Emma\" when we say that keeping close to common incidents, and to such characters as occupy the ordinary walks of life, she has produced sketches of such spirit and originality that we never mi the excitation which depends upon a narrative of uncommon events, arising from the consideration of minds, manners, and sentiments, greatly above our own.In this cla she stands almost alone; for the scenes of Mi Edgeworth are laid in higher life, varied by more romantic incident, and by her remarkable power of embodying and illustrating national character. But the author of \"Emma\" confines herself chiefly to the middling claes of society; her most distinguished characters do not rise greatly above well-bred country gentlemen and ladies; and those which are sketched with most originality and precision, belong to a cla rather below that standard. The narrative of all her novels is composed of such common occurrences as may have fallen under the observation of most folks; and her dramatis personæ conduct themselves upon the motives and principles which the readers may recognize as ruling their own, and that of most of their own acquaintances.—From \"The Quarterly Review,\" October, 1815.

Lord Macaulay 评论

SHAKESPEARE has had neither equal nor second. But among the writers who, in the point which we have noticed, have approached nearest to the manner of the great master we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen, a woman of whom England is justly proud. She has given us a multitude of characters, all, in a certain sense, commonplace, all such as we meet every day.Yet they are all as perfectly discriminated from each other as if they were the most eccentric of human beings. There are, for example, four clergymen, none of whom we should be surprised to find in any parsonage in the kingdom—Mr.Edward Ferrars, Mr.Henry Tilney, Mr.Edmund Bertram, and Mr.Elton.They are all specimens of the upper part of the middle cla. They have all been liberally educated. They all lie under the restraints of the same sacred profeion. They are all young. They are all in love. Not one of them has any hobby-horse, to use the phrase of Sterne. Not one has a ruling paion, such as we read of in Pope.Who would not have expected them to be insipid likenees of each other? No such thing.Harpagon is not more unlike to Jourdain, Joseph Surface is not more unlike to Sir Lucius O\'Trigger, than every one of Mi Austen\'s young divines to all his reverend brethren. And almost all this is done by touches so delicate that they elude analysis, that they defy the powers of description, and that we know them to exist only by the general effect to which they have contributed.—From eay on \"Madame D\'Arblay,\" 1843.

My point of view towards the masterpiece of Jane Austen’s is that this novel reflects the English human sentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative, and tells us the difference ways and attitudes to marriage of Mr.and Mrs.Bennet’s five daughters’.Thereby reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid Without considering all of these. There, the author emphasize the importance of ideal marriage, meanwhile, to be opposed to love & marriage based on money or property and to be opposed to people’s laugh love & marriage off.The author takes the affection/love as the cornerstone of ideal marriage between male and female.Elizabeth as the leading character in this novel, was born in the family of squireen’s, and is loved by Darcy.Darcy propose marriage to her in spite of difference in the poeion of property and social status, but is refused by Elizabeth for his pride , the novel demonstrate that if the pride of Darcy’s existed , there will be no love and also happy marriage between Elizabeth and he, it is really nice that Elizabeth witne the changes of Darcy’s through series of behavior in the following days.viewing that he is no longer pride and then eliminating her prejudice to him, finally engaged with him and leading a happy marriage. The author described that female is in pursuit of independent personality and equal right through several different attitudes of Elizabeth for Darcy’s propose marriage.Meanwhile, demonstrate Elizabeth’s independent understanding for a happy marriage. In this article, the writer described several unperfect marriages of Elizabeth’s sisters and close friends, aimed at making a sharp contrast with Elizabeth’s beatific marriage and revealed that marriage without love but base on social status and property actually is a kind of public tragedies.Humorous, ironical, polished language and real storyline is also occurred in this article.

When Pride Encounters Prejudice, Everything is Different

—the report of Pride and Prejudice

Ⅰ:

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817), one of the most famous novelists in Britain, was born in Hampshire. She lived in the villages throughout her life.Although there were 2 suitors, she never married. She finished her first novel when she was only 21 years old. This work’s name was First Impreions (After amending, it had a new name: Pride and Prejudice).

Ⅱ:

Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and marriage.Mr.Bennet was an English gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his wife.He had five daughters: the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia.Because of the law, after the death of Mr.Bennet, their house would be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met. This family\'s future happine and security dependent on the 5 daughters’ marriages. One day, a rich gentleman Mr.Bingley came and rented a large house in this country. His sisters and his best friend Mr.Darcy came together.Love was soon in the air for one of the 5 sisters, while another had a prejudice against Mr.Darcy.

Then they experienced many things, but at last, Mr.Bingley married the oldest sister Jane, and Elizabeth overcame the prejudice and married to Mr.Darcy.It’s a happy ending.

Ⅲ:

Although Mr.Song said the book report should be objective, but I had to say this book touched my heart deeply.

The women written by Jane Austen still live in our world.

Some like Charlotte Lucas, they choose a marriage without love just for money and a stable life.

Some like Lydia, they are so frivolous and foolish that they flatter themselves that they can do anything well.

Some like Mary, they are not good-looking but think themselves are the best ones. They look down every man while they are eager for a man’s love in their hearts.

Some like Jane, they are kind and beautiful, but they are also reserved and feminine。They don’t have courage to fight for the love of their own but wait here in vain.

And there are also some girls like innocent Ms Darcy or like vainglorious and superficially clever Bingley sisters.

Of course, some girls like Elizabeth, they are clever, gentle, open-minded, and they know their own hearts. They never give in even facing a difficult situation.1

They are good ladies who are worth loving and cherishing.

Jane Austen’s wisdom always appeals to me, which makes me smile through the whole reading.

In fact, the life of Jane Austen was unremarkable, she nearly didn’t leave the villages where she lived. Therefore, in her books, you can’t find any historical plots or any abstruse things making you feel bored. She just wrote some common people about their happine, little trouble, sorrow and perplexity again and again by her keen observation and her outstanding ability of writing.Although those stories happened in the villages of Britain 200 years ago, they are vivid today.Maybe she was not really a great writer in the world, but she is the cleverest and cutest woman in my heart. However, reality is not the novel. It is always cruel.Jane Austen never married throughout her life, her best friend was her sister. She was such a clever and naughty girl, whose gentlene and beauty were ignored. It’s a pity that there was no one like Mr.Darcy to appreciate and love her.

Jane Austen and Eileen Chang were very like.Their works had many things in common. For example, both of their works focused on the life which they were familiar with, and they both had the sharp observation.Although they liked to write some satires, Austen was gentler than Eileen Chang.

In Pride and Prejudice, you can find some very interesting dialogues.Such as in the CHAPTER 1, Mrs.Bonnet said: “Mr.Bennet, how can you abuse your own children in such a way? You take delight in vexing me.You have no compaion on my poor nerves.” “You mistake me, my dear.I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends.I have heard you mention them with consideration these 20 years at least.” the Mr.Bennet answered with a forced smile.

What sarcastic humor it contained! She succefully depicted Mrs.Bennet as a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper by few words. And the two of them left a deep and clear imprison on the readers.

Love is the eternal theme of novels.Pride and Prejudice was no exception, but it not only talked about “love”, also mentioned “marriage”.The novels about love or marriage are countle in the world. So standing out among them is not an easy thing.Pride and Prejudice can be one of the masterpieces and be loved by thousands upon thousands people from different countries, which proves that it does have its special glamour.

I mainly want to talk about Elizabeth’s 2 rejections. As readers or outsiders,we can easily reject anyone and don’t accept a marriage without love just for respecting our own hearts. But if you think it over and read the book again, you will find it needs great courage to reject a man who can support you a life without worrying about clothes and food.Rejecting her cousin Mr.Collins, an unpleasant person, seemed easy, however, her best friend Charlotte chose to marry him. This contrast shows very clearly that this rejection is difficult for a woman in those days.

Maybe you can find some reasons to explain why Elizabeth did that to Mr.Collins, but I’m sure there is no reason to refuse Mr.Darcy’s marriage proposal. He was such a perfect gentleman! Elizabeth couldn’t inherit her father’s fortune, which meant she had to marry a rich man to support her and live a comfortable life. But faced with Mr.Darcy, she said “no” without any hesitation. When Darcy proposed to her by saying his sense of her inferiority-of its being a degradation-of the family obstacles which judgment had always opposed to inclination.Elizabeth said: “It is nature that obligation should be felt, and if I could feel gratitude, I would now thank you.But I cannot —I have never desired your good opinion, and you have certainly bestowed it most unwillingly.”

I like this self-respecting girl and look down upon those girls who give in just for fortune, fame, even some petty profits

In fact, I don’t like a happy ending.I think a tragedy is more attractive and can reach the deepest part of my heart while a comedy is read just for relaxation. But I am also moved by this story.Pride gave way to sincerity, prejudice was replaced by love. They lived a happy life together.

We can image that they sat on the lakeside bench at twilight and talked about that green years when the pride met the prejudice。

Wuthering Heights

Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights told a complicated love story among Catherine ,Heathcliff and Edgar. And of course they three were suffered from this a lot until their death. After reading this novel, I was shocked badly by the emotions of these characters through which our writer expreed a plenty of thoughts. Now I want to pick out two points of them to give voice to my own opinion.Firstly, why the Gypsies like Heathcliff were looked down upon by the other people.Secondly I would like to talk the selfishne of the love between Catherine and Heathcliff. When it comes to Gypsies, it will make us think of freedom, paion and magic ,in other words , it seems that the Gypsies poe the ability of reading the other people\'s minds. However, it is also the nation always coursed and insulted by the others. The reason for that was the Gypsies have been keeping migrating form their appearance.Even nowadays nobody can explain why they must do such things, which also made them surrounded by a mysterious air.Though the Gypsies is an independent nation, they have no motherland and many basic human rights.Just like Heathcliff in this novel who always been laughed at by the so called \"superior \" people despite of his brightne and gentle looking.I maintained that the sense of shame was a most cause of his contortion and vengeance.Because of this self-abasement, Heathcliff did not dare to win the love of Catherine .Now let\'s shift our attention to the selfishne of the love between Heathcliff and Catherine .As a noble Mi ,Catherine thought she and Heathcliff were not well-matched for he was a poor and inferior farm boy thought they loved each other from childhood. One of the unbelievable reason gave by Catherine for her marriage with Edgar was she wanted to help Heathcliff by using her husband\'s money. And the other one was she could be the most important lady miles around by marrying Edgar. It was very clear that this kind of selfishne was the radical reason for their tragic endings. So was Heathcliff. He owed his failed marriage to Edgar and the others who ever turned up their noises at him.He cheated Isabella, sister of Edgar, and forced his son to marry Cathy ,daughter of Catherine and Edgar, in order to get Edgar\'s inheritance.I thought he never loved anyone except himself and Catherine .Maybe death was really a liberation for him to get himself out from the guilt and sorrows hidden in bottom of his heart.Luckily, after his death, Hareton and Cathy fell in love with each other and would live a happy life. Love is about giving not getting and Selfishne is what will ruin it.There was no doubt that Wuthering Heights was a thorough tragedy if we read it from this point.
