Notes about the presentations- Round one

These presentations are a large part of your grade. Please prepare and try your best.

The topic is up to you.If you are not sure, ask me.The important thing is to choose something that is interesting to you and that you think will be interesting to the audience.

If you are absent the day you are to give your presentation, you had better have a very good reason and you had better talk to me about it, or you will lose points.

Just try your best.I am not going to grade these very harshly. If I see that you tried hard and put work into it, that will help your grade. If I see that you really didn’t care, it may affect your grade negatively.

Try not to be nervous.I know speaking in a formal context is difficult for some people, but remember that it’s just your clamates and me.I have seen many, many, many speeches and will not think anything bad about you if you do your best.Don’t be nervous!

As I said in cla, try not to read the speech line by line. You can bring your speech to the podium with you, but you need to look at and engage your audience. If you don’t, it will affect your grade.Additionally, If you memorize your speech, you may sound robotic and unnatural, and you may forget your speech.Honestly, using notes is usually the best method. Also, if you use a power point, that is helpful

You are encouraged to use PowerPoint’s, pictures, the blackboard, music, videos, acting, or whatever you wish.Remember that whatever you use will be part of your speech and affect your grade.I think PowerPoint’s are especially useful, but you don’t have to use them if you don’t want. It’s up to you. However, you need to make sure that whatever you use helps deliver your central idea. Also you need to use it effectively. If music is too loud or the video too long and boring, it will affect your grade. However, all of these can be effective is used correctly.

You will have the option of using the microphones in the clarooms. If you have a quiet voice, I would suggest that you do.

Any technical iues will hurt your grade.Make sure that PowerPoint’s, videos, music, all work before the cla and that you waste our time.

Tips for topics: it really can be anything. Some suggestions

To inform- tell us about a book, movie, TV show, star, hobby that you think is interesting or good.If you do, don’t just give us a plot summary or a biography.Tell us also why this think is interesting and what elements about it make it good.Example.You give us a speech about the movie Titanic.JUST DON”T TELL US THE PLOT.What elements of

this movie make it special. What interesting things we don’t know about it can you tell us? What can you tell us that makes it special?

Hobbies are good.If so, its usually a good idea to give us some background/cultural information. What is its history? Where did it come from? What makes it special?

Informing us about a book or some element of study you find interesting can also be good.Maybe you love calligraphy.Tell us something about it.Maybe you want to tell us how to cook a food or make a craft. Those are good, but tell us why it’s interesting and why we should care!

It can be an iue you find interesting or important.Giving money to the poor.More art claes in school. Not wearing school uniforms. Not having a boyfriend in university.Sex education in school.Same sex marriage. It’s up to you.

Make sure that your subject has some substance.Things like we should always be happy are popular, but hard to make interesting.I would stay clear of things like that, but if you do one, please give us strong reasons and support.

Don’t steal speeches, words from the internet. If I find out that you did, it will hurt your mark.

The Topic is really open to you.Your job is to make it interesting.

The Aignment

 Deliver a 4 to 5 minute speech based on something you find interesting

 You will be graded on the following elements

o Writing- did the words and support you used support your meage

effectively?

o Delivery- Did your body language, eye contact, and voice engage the

audience and make them want to receive your meage?

o Grammar, Pronunciation, and Clarity- Could we understand what you said? Was it clear?

o Meage- at the end of the speech, did the audience receive your meage

clearly and want to think about or do something about what you said? Was

it interesting to us? It can be funny or serious, but it should keep or interest.

A note- remember if you are not speaking, to be a good audience. If you are noisy or distract the speaker in anyway, that will pi me off and I may yell at you or take points off your grade. Please listen to the speaker and be quiet! I am serious about this.

And remember, if you try your best, you will do ok.

If you have questions, talk to me in cla, or text or email.

Don’t Be Nervous!
