2009年12月3日，中国国务院总理温家宝在人民大会堂与来华进行正式访问的加拿大总理哈珀举行会谈，以下是双方在会谈前的讲话：
温家宝：这是你首次中国之行，也是近五年来中加两国总理的第一次会晤，五年的时间，对于中加关系来讲，确实太长了，因此有的媒体讲，这是一次来迟的访问。
WEN [via translator] Prime Minister Stephen Harper: welcome to paying an official visit to China.This is your first trip to China and this is the first meeting between the Chinese Premier and the Canadian Prime Minister in almost five years.Five years is too long a time for China Canada relations and that is why there are comments in the media that your visit is one that should have taken place earlier.
我想起2003年我访问贵国时，在演讲时，曾引用行同趋和，千里相从，来形容中加关系，希望双方成为不同制度，不同发展水平国家长期友好合作的榜样。
I remember quoting a Chinese proverb when I gave a speech during my visit to Canada in 2003.The proverb reads, “Common visions and common ideals can bring people together in spite of the thousands of miles that sets them apart.” I expreed the hope that China and Canada will set an example of long term and friendly cooperation between countries different in social systems and level of development.
因此总理先生的这次访问使命重大，意义特殊。
Mr Prime Minister, your visit this time has a great miion and a special significance.
我愿意就两国关系和共同关心的重大问题同你深入交换看法，增进相互了解和信任，推进双方在各领域的交流与合作。
I am willing to have an in depth exchange of views with you on China Canada relations and major iues of common interest to deepen our mutual understanding and trust and take forward exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in various areas.
希望通过你的访问，中加关系能够翻开新的一页。
We hope that through your visit the China Canada relationship will turn a new page.
HARPER : Thank you very much Premier Wen.First of all it’s a delight to be here for the first time and a real honour and pleasure to visit your country.I, as I said earlier, I saw the Great Wall this morning, which is something that I think probably everybody should see before they finish paing through this life and I look forward to seeing many more of the treasures of your country and meeting with the great Chinese people.
哈珀：非常感谢总理先生，我也非常感谢这次能够第一次与您会晤，我很荣幸也很高兴能够访问你们伟大的国家。今天上午我曾去长城进行参观，我认为所有人在有生之年都必然要去长城看一看，而且我也期待着能过在中国能够见到更多的瑰宝和更多的中国人。
We have had diplomatic relations between our two countries for almost forty years which has witneed tremendous growth in not just trade and investment but interaction of our peoples.I agree with you Premier that five years is a long time.It’s also been almost five years since we’ve had yourself or President Hu in our country, and so I hope as we approach this important milestone in our relationship, the forty year anniversary, that yourself or President Hu will also have the opportunity in the not too distant future to visit Canada.
中加之间的外交关系即将要有40年的历史了，在这40年中，我们的贸易和投资不断地增长，人员之间的往来也不断扩大，我完全同意您的说法，也就是五年对于中加的关系来讲，的确是太长了一些，而且离您上一次和胡主席上一次访问加拿大也有五年的时间了，我希望我们能够借这一个中加庆祝四十年的机会欢迎胡锦涛主席和您在不久的将来能访问加拿大。
