studentspeechdeliveredatthewashingtonuniversityengineeringgraduatestudentrecognitionceremony15may1997lorriefaithcranorfaculty,family,friends,andfellowgraduates,goodevening.iamhonoredtoaddreyoutonight.onbehalfofthegraduatingmastersanddoctoralstudentsofwashingtonuniversity\'choolofengineeringandappliedscience,iwouldliketothankalltheparents,spouses,families,andfriendswhoencouragedandsupportedusasweworkedtowardsourgraduatedegrees.iwouldespeciallyliketothankmyownfamily,eightmembersofwhichareintheaudiencetoday.iwouldalsoliketothankallofthedepartmentsecretariesandotherengineeringschoolstaffmemberswhoalwayeemedtobetherewhenconfusedgraduatestudentsneededhelp.andfinallyiwouldliketothankthewashingtonuniversityfacultymemberswhoservedasourinstructors,mentors,andfriends.asithinkbackontheseven-and-a-halfyearsispentatwashingtonuniversity,mymindisfilledwithmemories,happy,sad,frustrating,andevenhumorous.tonightiwouldliketosharewithyousomeofthememoriesthatitakewithmeasileavewashingtonuniversity.itakewithmethememoryofmyofficeonthefourthflooroflopatahall-theroomattheendofthehallwaythatwastoohotinsummer,toocoldinwinter,andalwaystoofarawayfromthewomen\'srestroom.thewindowwasmyoffice\'sbestfeature.wereitnotforthephysicsbuildingacrotheway,itwouldhaveaffordedmeaclearviewofthearch.butinsteadigotaviewoftheroofofthephysicsbuilding.ialsohadaviewofonecorneroftheroofofurbauerhall,whichseemedtobeafavoriteperchforvarioupeciesofbirdswhoalternatelywonperchingrightsforseveralweeksatatime.andihadaniceviewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthyasagoodplaceforwatchingpeopleruntheirdogs.it\'samazinghowfascinatingtheseviewsbecamethelongeriworkedonmydiertation.butmyfavoriteviewwasofanearbyoaktree.frommyfourth-floorvantagepointihadaratherintimateviewofthetreeandthevariousbirdsandsquirrelsthatinhabitit.occasionallyabirdwouldlandonmywindowsill,whichusuallyhadtheeffectofstartlingbothofus.itakewithmethememoryoftwoyoungprofeorswhopaedawaywhileiwasagraduatestudent.annejohnstone,theonlyfemaleprofeorfromwhomitookacourseintheengineeringschool,andbobdurr,apoliticalscienceprofeorandamemberofmydiertationcommittee,bothlostbravebattleswithcancer.irememberthemfondly.itakewithmethememoryoffailingthefirstexaminoneofthefirstengineeringcoursesitookasanundergraduate.irememberthinkingthecoursewasjusttoohardformeandthatiwouldneverbeabletopait.soiwenttotalktotheprofeor,readytodropthecla.andhetoldmenottogiveup,hetoldmeicouldsucceedinhiscla.forreasonsthatseemedcompletelyludicrousatthetime,hesaidhehadfaithinme.andafterthatmygradesintheclalowlyimproved,andiendedthesemesterwithanaonthefinalexam.irememberhowmotivationalitwastoknowthatsomeonebelievedinme.itakewithmememoriesofthemidwesternfriendlinethatsosurprisedmewheniarrivedinst.louis8yearsago.sincemovingtonewjersey,iamsadtosay,nobodyhasaskedmewhereiwenttohighschool.itakewithmethememoryoftheshort-livedcomputersciencegraduatestudentsocialcommitteelunches.theideawasthatgroupsofcsgradstudentsweresupposedtotaketurnscookingamonthlylunch.butafteronegradstudentpreparedapotofchickenthatpoisonedalmosttheentirecsgradstudentpopulationandoneunluckyfacultymemberinonefellswoop,therewasn\'tmuchenthusiasmforhavingmorelunches.itakewithmethememoryofamoresuccefulgraduatestudenteffort,theestablishmentoftheaociationofgraduateengineeringstudents,knownasages.startedbyahandfulofengineeringgraduatestudentsbecauseweneededawaytoelectrepresentativestoacampus-widegraduatestudentgovernment,ageoongrewintoanorganizationthatnowsponsorsawidevarietyofactivitiesandhasbeeninstrumentalinaddreinganumberofengineeringgraduatestudentconcerns.itakewithmethememoryofanengineeringandpolicydepartmentthatoncehadflourishingprogramsforfull-timeundergraduate,masters,anddoctoralstudents.itakewithmememoriesofthe1992u.s.presidentialdebate.eagertogetinvolvedinalltheexcitementivolunteeredtohelpwhereverneeded.irememberspendingseveraldaysinthemakeshiftdebatehqgivingout-of-townreportersdirectionstotheathleticcomplex.irememberbeingthrilledtogetaignedthejobofcollectingfilmfromthephotographersinthedebatehallduringthedebate.andirememberthedisappointmentofdrawingtheshorteststrawamongthestudentvolunteersandbeingtheonewhohadtotakethefilmoutofthedebatehallanddowntothedarkroomfiveminutesintothedebate-withnochancetore-enterthedebatehallafterileft.itakewithmememoriesofuniversityholidayswhichneverseemedtoapplytograduatestudents.irememberspendingmanyafallbreakandpresident\'sdayholidaywithmyfellowgradstudentsinalldaymeetingsbroughttousbythecomputersciencedepartment.itakewithmememoriesofexamsthatseemeddesignedmoretotestenduranceandperseverancethanmasteryofthesubjectmatter.imanagedtoescapetakinganyclaesthatfeaturedinfamous24-hour-take-homeexams,butrememberthesufferingofmylefortunatecolleagues.andwhatdoctoralstudentcouldforgetthepainandsufferingonemustenduretosurvivethequalifyingexams?itakewithmethememoryoftheseven-minuterule,whichalwayeemedtobeanacceptableexcuseforbeingtenminuteslateforanythingoncampus,butwhichdoesn\'tseemtoapplyanywhereelseigo.itakewithmethememoryoffridayafternoonacmhappyhours,knownnotforke
