第一幕，第三场。
NARRATOR Now ladies and gentlemen , you’re about to hear the most incredible tale.It is the summer of 1903, and Henry Adams, an American busine, has had some very bad luck.He is lost in London.He has no money and does not know what he should do.Walking down the street, he hears someone calling him.
讲述人：那是1903年的夏天。一对年老而富有的兄弟，罗德里克和奥利弗，打了一个赌。奥利弗相信一个有一百万英镑的人能够在伦敦生活一个月。他的哥哥罗德里克怀疑这一点。就在这个时候，他们看了见一个一贫如洗的年轻人在他们房子外面的人行道上徘徊。他叫亨利 亚当斯。他在伦敦迷失了，也不知道该做些什么。
RODERICKYoung man, would you step inside a moment, please?

OLIVERThrough the front door on your left.

HENRY(a servant opens the door for him) Thanks.

SERVANTGood morning, sir, would you please come in? Permit meto lead the way ,sir.

OLIVERThank you, James.That will be all.

RODERICKHow do you do, Mister－er－?
罗德克里：你好，先生……呃……？
HENRYAdams, Henry Adams.
亨利：亚当斯，亨利。亚当斯
OLIVERCome and sit down, Mr Adams.
罗德里克：过来坐下，亚当斯先生。……
HENRYThank you.
亨利：谢谢
RODERICKYou’re an American?
罗德里克：你是美国人？
HENRYThat’s right, from San Francisco.
亨利：对，我来自旧金山。
RODERICKHow well do you know London
罗德里克：你对伦敦了解的多吗？
HENRYNot at all.It’s my first trip here.
亨利：一点也不了解，我是第一次来这。
RODERICKI wonder, Mr Adams, if you’d mind us asking a few questions.罗德里克：亚当斯先生，不知你是否介意我们问你一些问题？
HENRYGo right ahead.

RODERICKMay we ask what you’re doing in this country and what your plans are?
罗德里克：我们想问你在英国干什么，你有什么计划吗？
HENRYWell, I can’t say that I have any plans.I’m hoping to find work.As a matter of fact, I landed in Britian by accident.
亨利：哦，我不能说我有什么计划，我只希望能找份工作。实际上，我是偶然来到英国的。
OLIVERHow is that poible?
奥利弗：这怎么可能呢？
HENRYWell, you see, back home I had my own boat.About a month ago I was sailing out of the bay－(his eyes stare at what is left of the brother’s dinner on the table)
亨利：哦，你知道，我在家里有一条自己的船。大概一个月前，我正准备驶出海湾…… RODERICKWell, go on.
奥利弗：哦，接着说。
HENRYOh, yes.Well, towards nightfall I found myself carried out to sea by a strong wind.I did not know whether I could survive until morning.The next morning I’d just about given myself up for lost when I was spotted by a ship.亨利:好的，夜幕降至，我发现刮起了强烈的风，这都是我的错。第二天早上，我还是迷失了方向，幸好有艘船发现了我。
OLIVERAnd it was the ship that bought you to England.
奥利弗：那么就是那艘船带你来到英格兰了。
HENRYI earned my paage by working as an unpaid hand, which accounts for my appearance.(the brothers smile at each other)
亨利：是的，事实上他们让我在船上帮工才免了我的船费，这就是我为什么会衣冠不整的原因了。我去美国大使馆求助，但是……
RODERICKWell, you mustn’t worry about that.It’s an advantage.

HENRYI’m afraid I don’t quite follow you, sir.

RODERICKTell us, Mr Adams, what sort of work did you do in America? 罗德里克：亚当斯先生，对我们说说你在美国从事的工作。
HENRYI worked for a mining company.Could you offer me some kind of work here?
亨利：我在船厂上班，你们能不能给我提供一份工作啊？
RODERICKPatience, Mr Adams.If you don’t mind, may I ask you how much money you have?罗德里克： 别着急，亚当斯先生，如果你不介意，我想知道你还有多少钱？
HENRYWell, to be honest, I have none.
亨利：说老实话，我没钱。
OLIVER(happily) What luck! Brother, what luck!(claps his hands together) 奥利弗：这太幸运了！这太幸运了！
HENRYWell, it may seem lucky to you but not to me.If this is your idea of some kind of joke, I don’t think it’s very funny.(Henry stands up to leave)Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll be on my way.
亨利：这也许对你们来说很幸运，但是对我来说一点也不好。如果这一切不过是你们开的玩笑，我并不觉得很有趣。如果你们不介意的话我先走了。
RODERICKPlease don’t go, Mr Adams.You mustn’t think we don’t care about you.Oliver, give him the letter.
罗德里克：请不要走，亚当斯先生。你千万不要觉得我们不在乎你。奥利弗，把信给他 OLIVERYes, the letter.(gets it from a desk and gives it to Henry like a gift) The letter.
奥利弗：对，信，这是信。
HENRY(taking it carefully) For me?

RODERICKFor you.(Henry starts to open to it) Oh, no, you mustn’t open it.Not yet.You can’t open it until two two o’clock.
罗德里克：是给你的。不，现在不要拆，到下午两点再拆。
HENRYOh, this is silly.
亨利： 这太滑稽了。
RODERICKNot silly.There’s money in it.(calls to the servant) James.罗德里克：不滑稽，里面装着钱。
HENRYOh, no, I don’t want your charity.I just want an honest job.亨利：不，我不需要你们的施舍，我只需要一份工作。
RODERICKWe know you’re hard-working.That’s why we’ve given you the letter.James, show Mr Adams out.
罗德里克：我们知道很踏实，这也是我们把信交给你的原因。詹姆斯，送亚当斯先生出去吧。
OLIVERGood luck, Mr Adams.

HENRYWell, why don’t you explain what this is all about?
