心理学的研究表明：人们在接受事物的时候，对事物的开头和结尾印象比较深。譬如，看一篇小说或者听一段故事，往往是中间的有些情节已经淡忘，但是对开头和结尾仍记忆犹新。所以，人们比较重视事物的开头和结尾。开场白是发言的开头，说得好，能够打动听众的心，激发起他们的情绪，使听众以高昂的情绪听发言，产生良好的发言效果。因此，几乎所有发言人都非常重视开场白。 开场白多种多样，归纳起来主要有这样几类：

一、自我介绍式

发言人落座后，首先做一个自我介绍，把自己的基本情况，或者是自己单位的基本情况告诉听众，然后，宣读讲稿，或者边宣读讲稿边解释发言内容，或者脱稿发言。这样的开场白叫做自我介绍式开场白。譬如，在全国NIT应用技术交流会上，有一位代表发言的开场白是：\"同志们好！我是河南省南阳幼儿师范的老师，也是我们学校NIT推广项目的负责人。现在，我向诸位同仁汇报一下我们学校在NIT方面的做法，......。\"再譬如说，在河南省课件制作交流会上，某代表的开场白是：\"各位老师，你们好！我叫张军，来自河南省的南疆边陲新野县，是一所乡村小学普通老师，......。\" 听众有一个共同的心理，就是想知道自己在听谁发言。知道了发言人的基本情况，心里会塌实许多，可以专心致志地听会。不知道发言人的基本情况，在听的过程中，心里老是不塌实，好象缺了点什么似的，时不时会自言自语地在心里问\"这是谁？\"有的人还会停止听讲，向周围的人打探发言人的基本情况，分散注意力，降低听会的效果。

自我介绍是有条件的，不是所有发言都可以套用。譬如，一所普通中学开语文教研会，发言人就没有必要做自我介绍。普通中学的语文教师不会太多，少则几人，多则十几人，大家朝夕相处，彼此了解，没有必要把自己的基本情况再重复一遍。一般说来，在参加会议的人比较多，涉及的单位比较多，发言人不为人知的情况下，才使用自我介绍式开场白。

自我介绍要讲究技巧。自我介绍内容简单，容易说得平铺直叙。自我介绍作为发言的开始，不仅是向听众介绍自己的基本情况，而且还肩负有激发听众兴趣

的任务，如果只是简单地说自己叫什么，是哪个单位的人，那就太乏味啦！难以达到挑逗听众情绪的目的。应该把自我介绍文学化，借助文学的魅力，激起听众的情绪。还要强调关键性词语，吸引听众的注意力。在全国少年小发明交流会上，一位少年这样发言：\"尊敬的爷爷、伯伯、奶奶、阿姨，你们好！我叫郭红，郭沫若的郭，红色的红，来自遥远的云南省白家县乌龙镇啊丽山寨，前天是我的12岁生日。\"\"郭沫若\"、\"12\"、\"山寨\"的发音特别重。郭沫若是大家比较熟悉的人，强调和郭沫若一个姓，不仅诙谐有趣，也便于听众记忆。12岁的小孩子能够登上国家发明交流会的讲坛，实在是了不起！在不少人的心目中，小发明是城市孩子人的专利，边远山寨的孩子能够在小发明方面做出卓越的成绩，确实了不起！强调\"12\"和\"山寨\"，能够加大人们的心理反差，激发人们的听会热情。

二、谦虚式

在正式发言前，结合发言的内容说一通谦虚、客套话，这样的开场白，我们叫它谦虚式开场白。例如，在某县\"八荣八耻\"教育经验交流会上，有一所学校的代表这样说：\"上一周，县教育局的刘jú长到我们学校视察工作，看了我们学校\'荣辱\'教育的部分工作，就安排我们写一个\'荣辱\'教育的经验材料，准备在这次会议上发言，依此来推动我县的荣辱教育。我们只是按照县教育局的安排做了一点工作，很不到位，还有一些漏洞，和某些兄弟学校相比较，可能还不如他们，确实没有什么可炫耀的。为了推动我们县的荣辱教育，和大家互相学习，那我就抛砖引玉啦！\" 人们最反感的是高傲的发言。既然是作为先进代表发言，肯定在某些方面做出了突出的成绩，有值得人们学习的地方。否则，领导也不会安排你发言的。人有了成绩，常常会得意忘形，夸夸其谈、目空一切，而遭到众人的反对。况且先进代表发言，就是让发言人说自己工作中的成绩的，这更容易使与会的人感到盛气凌人，尤其是遭到哪些工作平淡的人的反对。谦虚的开场白，可以化解矛盾，拉近发言人与听众之间的距离，使与会者以良好的心态听取发言。

过度地谦虚就是骄傲。在会议发言上，谦虚的话要说，但是，不能够过分地谦虚，必须控制住谦虚的尺度。

三、谅解式

我所了解，我们基本都是新入职的新员工，为了我们今后便于工作的交流、沟通，很有必要大家相互了解认识一下，不然，在这样一个大家庭里，我们都不了解，没有的友情，那会有一个轻松愉悦的工作氛围来呢？那能把工作干得更好呢？你们说是不是呀。

会议发言的特点：它对于听众来说，没有选择的权力，也没有和发言人交流的机会，只有按照发言人的设计按部就班地听下去。这就要求听众必须处于兴奋状态，注意力高度集中。而为了激发听众的情绪，发言人常常在正式发言之前，说一些挑逗听众情绪的话，这就是我们常说的开场白，好使听众保持一个兴奋的状态，心理学的研究表明：人们在接受事物的时候，对事物的开头和结尾印象比较深。譬如，看一篇小说或者听一段故事，往往是中间的有些情节已经淡忘，但是对开头和结尾仍记忆犹新。所以，人们比较重视事物的开头和结尾。开场白是发言的开头，说得好，能够打动听众的心，激发起他们的情绪，使听众以高昂的情绪听发言，产生良好的发言效果。因此，几乎所有发言人都非常重视开场白。

开场白多种多样，归纳起来主要有这样几类：

一、自我介绍式

发言人落座后，首先做一个自我介绍，把自己的基本情况，或者是自己单位的基本情况告诉听众，然后，宣读讲稿，或者边宣读讲稿边解释发言内容，或者脱稿发言。这样的开场白叫做自我介绍式开场白。因为听众有一个共同的心理，就是想知道自己在听谁发言。知道了发言人的基本情况，心里会塌实许多，可以专心致志地听会。不知道发言人的基本情况，在听的过程中，心里老是不塌实，好象缺了点什么似的，时不时会自言自语地在心里问“这是谁？”有的人还会停止听讲，向周围的人打探发言人的基本情况，分散注意力，降低听会的效果。

当然了自我介绍是有条件的，不是所有发言都可以套用。譬如，一所普通中学开语文教研会，发言人就没有必要做自我介绍。普通中学的语文教师不会太多，少则几人，多则十几人，大家朝夕相处，彼此了解，没有必要把自己的基本情况再重复一遍。一般说来，在参加会议的人数和涉及的单位比较多时，并且发言人在不被别人认识的情况下，才使用自我介绍式开场白。

自我介绍要讲究技巧。自我介绍内容简单，容易说得平铺直叙。自我介绍作为发言的开始，不仅是向听众介绍自己的基本情况，而且还肩负有激发听众兴趣的任务，如果只是简单地说自己叫什么，是哪个单位的人，那就太乏味啦！难以达到挑逗听众情绪的目的。应该把自我介绍文学化，借助文学的魅力，激起听众的情绪。还要强调关键性词语，吸引听众的注意力。在全国少年小发明交流会上，一位少年这样发言：“尊敬的爷爷、伯伯、奶奶、阿姨，

你们好！我叫郭红，郭沫若的郭，红色的红，来自遥远的云南省白家县乌龙镇啊丽山寨，前天是我的12岁生日。”“郭沫若”、“12”、“山寨”的发音特别重。郭沫若是大家比较熟悉的人，强调和郭沫若一个姓，不仅诙谐有趣，也便于听众记忆。12岁的小孩子能够登上国家发明交流会的讲坛，实在是了不起！在不少人的心目中，小发明是城市孩子人的专利，边远山寨的孩子能够在小发明方面做出卓越的成绩，确实了不起！强调“12”和“山寨”，能够加大人们的心理反差，激发人们的听会热情。

二、谦虚式

在正式发言前，结合发言的内容说一通谦虚、客套话，这样的开场白，我们叫它谦虚式开场白。例如，在某县“八荣八耻”教育经验交流会上，有一所学校的代表这样说：“上一周，县教育局的刘局长到我们学校视察工作，看了我们学校„荣辱‟教育的部分工作，就安排我们写一个„荣辱‟教育的经验材料，准备在这次会议上发言，依此来推动我县的荣辱教育。我们只是按照县教育局的安排做了一点工作，很不到位，还有一些漏洞，和某些兄弟学校相比较，可能还不如他们，确实没有什么可炫耀的。为了推动我们县的荣辱教育，和大家互相学习，那我就抛砖引玉啦！”

人们最反感的是高傲的发言。既然是作为先进代表发言，肯定在某些方面做出了突出的成绩，有值得人们学习的地方。否则，领导也不会安排你发言的。人有了成绩，常常会得意忘形，夸夸其谈、目空一切，而遭到众人的反对。况且先进代表发言，就是让发言人说自己工作中的成绩的，这更容易使与会的人感到盛气凌人，尤其是遭到哪些工作平淡的人的反对。谦虚的开场白，可以化解矛盾，拉近发言人与听众之间的距离，使与会者以良好的心态听取发言。过度地谦虚就是骄傲。在会议发言上，谦虚的话要说，但是，不能够过分地谦虚，必须控制住谦虚的尺度。

三、谅解式

在正式发言支前，讲一些主观或者客观的理由，为自己发言可能出现的问题、不妥、错误开脱责任，以求得与会人的谅解。这样的开场白叫做谅解式开场白。在全国CAI教学经验交流会上，有一位代表这样说：“这次会议，本来是让我们学校的张科长参加的，因为他有别的事情不能够出席，就让我来了。因为是临时决定，张科长也没有把发言稿和相关的材料转交给我，我也没有发言的思想准备，两个小时前才慌慌张张地写出这个发言材料，很不成熟！刚才我看了一眼，竟然日期都写错啦。今天是2006年5月5日星期五，可是，发言材料上写的是2005年5月5日星期五。可能还有其他问题和不妥的地方，如果真有其他问题和不妥之处，还要请诸位批评指正，多多包涵。”

大会发言最忌讳的是出现语言问题和礼节问题。因为，语言代表着发言人乃至发言人所在单位的文化水平，礼节反映发言人的文明程度。讲得好，能够博得与会者的钦佩和尊重，迎来一片喝彩；讲得不好，将有损发言人的形象，甚至会迎来阵阵倒掌。在文化大革命期间，有一位转业的老红军，被任命为邓县教育革命委员会的副局长。有一次，他带领邓县共产主义大学的师生到新野县共产主义大学参观学习，在欢迎大会上，新野“共大”校长致欢迎词：“„„，我们诚挚地欢迎邓县共产主义大学的革命同志们来给我们‘传经送宝’。”主席台上、台下欢声雷动，一片热烈的掌声。轮到老红军副局长发言了，他看到刚才新野共大校长说“传经送宝”时响起了经久不息的掌声，误认为这个词能够激发听众的热情，便说：“我是邓县教育革命委员会的副局长，今天，我带领我们邓县共产主义劳动大学的革命同志们来到新野共产主义大学，来给这里的阶级兄弟们‘传经送宝’来啦！”近千位与会者先是一愣，后是暴风雨般的掌声和前仰后合的大笑、狂笑。

参加会议的人，都是与会议内容有关的人士，也不乏内行、行家和专家。一个人的发言，几百乃至几千双耳朵在审查，挑个什么毛病并不难。不论发言人怎样的慎重，总还会出现这样那样的问题，或者轻或者重，或者大或者小。对发言可能出现的失误事先做一点辩解，以求得同仁们的谅解并不多余，尤其是哪些仓促迎战的发言，更是必要。

四、强调式

在正式发言前，有人站起来对发言内容做简单的介绍，重点强调发言内容的重要性，和听取发言的必要性，这样的开场白叫做强调式开场白。某县教育行政部门组织“情商教育学术报告会”，邀请某大学心理学博士给全县的中小学教师做报告。博士做报告前，教育局师训科科长站起来为这位博士做了个开场白：“今天，我们有幸邀请到XX大学的XX博士给我们做情商教育方面的学术报告，请大家鼓掌欢迎。（稍停。掌声过后）XX博士是专一研究情商教育的，他的研究成果多次在国际性刊物上发表，他本人也多次参加国际情商教育经验交流会，并代表中华人民共和国在大会上发言，他关于情商与成材关系的理论得到了国际同行的认可，是我国乃至世界上著名的情商教育专家。我们都是老师，情商教育是我们的历史责任。XX博士关于情商教育的理论和方法，处于世界领先水平。认真听取XX博士的报告，对我们今后教学大有益处，务必请同志们保持安静、认真听讲，切不可错过这个千载难逢的学习机会。”

多数开场白由发言人自己做，只有少数开场白由他人做。强调式开场白一般由他人做。强调式开场白有骄傲的成份，如果出自发言人的口，会遭到“王婆卖瓜自卖自夸”的嫌疑，引起听众的反感，从负面影响与会者的听讲情绪。强调式开场白出自他人之口，会显得发言人谦逊伟大，容易调动听众的情绪。

The International Children\'s Day (ICD) is celebrated in numerous countries, usually (but not always) on June 1 each year.

The ICD had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925.It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the ICD: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.

in my early period there, i had two major projects.the first was an article i wrote for judge thomas\' signature on the education of minority students.the second was the organization of a seminar on high-risk students which was abandoned because judge thomas transferred to the eeoc where he became the chairman of that office.

during this period at the department of education, my working relationship with judge thomas was positive.i had a good deal of responsibility and independence.i thought he respected my work and that he trusted my judgment.after approximately three months of working there, he asked me to go out socially with him.

what happened next and telling the world about it are the two most difficult things -- experiences of my life.it is only after a great deal of agonizing consideration and sleeplenumber -- a great number of sleeplenights tha(t i amable to talk of these unpleasant matters to anyone but my close friends.

i declined the invitation to go out socially with him and explained to him that i thought it would jeopardize what at the time i considered to be a very good working relationship.i had a normal social life with other men outside of the office.i believed then, as now, that having a social relationship with a person who was supervising my work would be ill-advised.i was very uncomfortable with the idea and told him so.

i thought that by saying no and explaining my reasons my employer would abandon his social suggestions.however, to my regret, in the following few weeks, he continued to ask me out on several occasions.he preed me to justify my reasons for saying no to him.these incidents took place in his office or mine.they were in the form of private conversations which would not have been overheard by anyone else.

his conversations were very vivid.he spoke about acts that he had seen in pornographic films involving such matters as women having se-x with animals and films showing group se-x or rape scenes.he talked about pornographic materials depicting individuals with large penises or large breasts involved in various se-x acts.on several occasions, thomas told me graphically of his own se-xual prowe.

in 1981, i was introduced to now judge thomas by a mutual friend.judge thomas told me that he was anticipating a political appointment, and he asked if i would be interested in working with him.he was, in fact, appointed as aistant secretary of education for civil rights.after he had taken that post, he asked if i would become his aistant, and i accepted that position.

in my early period there, i had two major projects.the first was an article i wrote for judge thomas\' signature on the education of minority students.the second was the organization of a seminar on high-risk students which was abandoned because judge thomas transferred to the eeoc where he became the chairman of that office.

during this period at the department of education, my working relationship with judge thomas was positive.i had a good deal of responsibility and independence.i thought he respected my work and that he trusted my judgment.after approximately three months of working there, he asked me to go out socially with him.

what happened next and telling the world about it are the two most difficult things -- experiences of my life.it is only after a great deal of agonizing consideration and sleeple number -- a great number of sleeple nights that i am able to talk of these unpleasant matters to anyone but my close friends.

i declined the invitation to go out socially with him and explained to him that i thought it would jeopardize what at the time i considered to be a very good working relationship.i had a normal social life with other men outside of the office.i believed then, as now, that having a social relationship with a person who was supervising my work would be ill-advised.i was very uncomfortable with the idea and told him so.

i thought that by saying no and explaining my reasons my employer would abandon his social suggestions.however, to my regret, in the following few weeks, he continued to ask me out on several occasions.he preed me to justify my reasons for saying no to him.these incidents took place in his office or mine.they were in the form of private conversations which would not have been overheard by anyone else.

my working relationship became even more strained when judge thomas began to use work situations to discu sex.on these occasions, he would call me into his office for reports on education iues and projects, or he might suggest that, because of the time preures of his schedule, we go to lunch to a government cafeteria.after a brief discuion of work, he would turn the conversation to a discuion of sexual matters.

his conversations were very vivid.he spoke about acts that he had seen in pornographic films involving such matters as women having sex with animals and films showing group sex or rape scenes.he talked about pornographic materials depicting individuals with large penises or large breasts involved in various sex acts.on several occasions, thomas told me graphically of his own sexual prowe.

when judge thomas was made chair of the eeoc, i needed to face the question of whether to go with him.i was asked to do so, and i did.the work itself was interesting, and at that time it appeared that the sexual overtures which had so troubled me had ended.i also faced the realistic fact that i had no alternative job.while i might have gone back to private practice, perhaps in my old firm or at another, i was dedicated to civil rights work, and my first choice was to be in that field.moreover, the department of education itself was a dubious venture.president reagan was seeking to abolish the entire department.

for my first months at the eeoc, where i continued to be an aistant to judge thomas, there were no sexual conversations or overtures.however, during the fall and winter of 1982, these began again.the comments were random and ranged from preing me about why i didn\'t go out with him to remarks about my personal appearance.i remember his saying that some day i would have to tell him the real reason that i wouldn\'t go out with him.

he began to show displeasure in his tone and voice and his demeanor and his continued preure for an explanation.he commented on what i was wearing in terms of whether it made me more or le sexually attractive.the incidents occurred in his inner office at the eeoc.

one of the oddest episodes i remember was an occasion in which thomas was drinking a coke in his office.he got up from the table at which we were working, went over to his desk to get the coke, looked at the can and asked, \"who has pubic hair on my coke?\" on other occasions, he referred to the size of his own penis as being larger than normal, and he also spoke on some occasions of the pleasures he had given to women with oral sex.

at this point, late 1982, i began to feel severe stre on the job.i began to be concerned that clarence thomas might take out his anger with me by degrading me or not giving me important aignments.i also thought that he might find an excuse for dismiing me.

in january of 1983, i began looking for another job.i was handicapped because i feared that, if he found out, he might make it difficult for me to find other employment and i might be dismied from the job i had.another factor that made my search more difficult was that there was a period -- this was during a period of a hiring freeze in the government.in february of 1983, i was hospitalized for five days on an emergency basis for acute stomach pain which i attributed to stre on the job.

once out of the hospital, i became more committed to find other employment and sought further to minimize my contact with thomas.this became easier when allison duncan (sp) became office director, because most of my work was then funneled through her and i had contact with clarence thomas mostly in staff meetings.

in the spring of 1983, an opportunity to teach at oral roberts university opened up.i participated in a seminar -- taught an afternoon seion and seminar at oral roberts university.the dean of the university saw me teaching and inquired as to whether i would be interested in furthering -- pursuing a career in teaching, beginning at oral roberts university.i agreed to take the job in large part because of my desire to escape the preures i felt at the eeoc due to judge thomas.

when i informed him that i was leaving in july, i recall that his response was that now i would no longer have an excuse for not going out with him.i told him that i still preferred not to do so.at some time after that meeting, he asked if he could take me to dinner at the end of the term.when i declined, he aured me that the dinner was a profeional courtesy only and not a social invitation.i reluctantly agreed to accept that invitation, but only if it was at the every end of a working day.

on, as i recall, the last day of my employment at the eeoc in the summer of 1983, i did have dinner with clarence thomas.we went directly from work to a restaurant near the office.we talked about the work i had done, both at education and at the eeoc.he told me that he was pleased with all of it except for an article and speech that i had done for him while we were at the office for civil rights.finally, he made a comment that i will vividly remember.he said that if i ever told anyone of his behavior that it would ruin his career.this was not an apology, nor was it an explanation.that was his last remark about the poibility of our going out or reference to his behavior.

in july of 1983, i left washington, dc area and have had minimal contact

with judge clarence thomas since.i am of course aware from the pre that some questions have been raised about conversations i had with judge clarence thomas after i left the eeoc.from 1983 until today, i have seen judge thomas only twice.on one occasion, i needed to get a reference from him, and on another he made a public appearance in tulsa.

on one occasion he called me at home and we had an inconsequential conversation.on one occasion he called me without reaching me, and i returned the call without reaching him, and nothing came of it.i have on at least three occasions, been asked to act as a conduit to him for others.

i knew his secretary, diane holt.we had worked together at both eeoc and education.there were occasions on which i spoke to her, and on some of these occasions undoubtedly i paed on some casual comment to then chairman thomas.there were a series of calls in the first three months of 1985, occasioned by a group in tulsa, which wished to have a civil rights conference.they wanted judge thomas to be the speaker and enlisted my aistance for this purpose.

i did call in january and february to no effect, and finally suggested to the person directly involved, susan cahal (ph) that she put the matter into her own hands and call directly.she did so in march of 1985.in connection with that march invitation, ms.cahal (ph) wanted conference materials for the seminar and some research was needed.i was asked to try to get the information and did attempted to do so.

there was another call about another poible conference in july of 1985.in august of 1987, i was in washington, dc and i did call diane holt.in the course of this conversation, she asked me how long i was going to be in town and i told her.it is recorded in the meage as august 15.it was, in fact, august 20th.she told me about judge thomas\'s marriage and i did say congratulate him.

it is only after a great deal of agonizing consideration that i am able to talk of these unpleasant matters to anyone except my closest friends.as i\'ve said before these last few days have been very trying and very hard for me and it hasn\'t just been the last few days this week.it has actually been over a month now that i have been under the strain of this iue.

telling the world is the most difficult experience of my life, but it is very close to having to live through the experience that occasion this meeting.i may have used poor judgment early on in my relationship with this iue.i was aware, however, that telling at any point in my career could adversely affect my future career.and i did not want early on to burn all the bridges to the eeoc.

as i said, i may have used poor judgment.perhaps i should have taken angry or even militant steps, both when i was in the agency, or after i left it.but i must confe to the world that the course that i took seemed the better as well as the easier approach.

i declined any comment to newspapers, but later when senate staff asked me about these matters i felt i had a duty to report.i have no personal vendetta against clarence thomas.i seek only to provide the committee with information which it may regard as relevant.
