One hundred years of solitude
Latin America is such a magical land which gave birth to one of the greatest kind of literature—Magical Realism.One hundred years of solitude from Garcia Marquez is perhaps the most outstanding work of all these.I can still remember how curious I was when I read the first sentence: “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember the distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.” Who is that person? I asked myself.Then from page to page, I unpacked the mysteries of the history with tears and blood.Flashback is the most common writing skill used in this novel.I was even quite eager to know when Buendia will be killed by the firing squad.
The narrator, Marquez was born in Colombia in 1928.He studied at the University of Bogotá and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas and New York.The book One hundred years of solitude was written in 1967 and brought a lightening to the world literature.This masterpiece of him was translated into many different languages.Garcia Marquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982.
I can feel the emotions flow out of the paragraphs and expreed a kind of deep and true love from the author to his homeland.The people in Macondo were surprised by many different new inventions from the
outside world, like flying machine, train, pianola, or even magnet.When I was reading these plots, I recalled back then when China was still at her feudal era.Chinese people were also stunned to see cameras, trains, or even clocks.No wonder Garcia has such a deep feeling of his land.The book gave us a picture almost like a myth.Garcia succefully mixed his imagination with his impreion of Latin America.I consider the novel more than a splendid story.It is also a mirror of human’s development and fighting in modern times.The Buendia family is the symbol of the dark years of Latin America, like a circle of lives in six generations, finally fell apart like the code written by a Gipsy, Melquiades.The ending of Buendia family seems to tell us that nothing could last long without revolution.When facing the ignorance and evil, the family chose to decipher the parchment instead of finding ways to survive.When the girl with pig tail was born, the fate was inevitably waiting for the family.With the last Buendia was wiped out by the wind and exiled form the memory of men at the precise moment.Just like a curse, the races condemned to one hundred years of solitude did not have a second opportunity on earth.王萧林 Aug 10th
