作为上海市国有控股特大型企业集团，绿地集团创立于1992年7月18日，至今二十余年来，始终坚持“绿地，让生活更美好”的企业宗旨，做政府所想、为市场所需，通过产业经营与资本经营并举发展，已形成目前“房地产主业突出，能源、金融等相关产业并举发展”的产业布局，在2012《财富》世界企业500强中位列第483 位，在中国企业500强中位列第73位，在以房地产为主业的综合性企业集团中排名第1位。2012年绿地集团实现业务经营收入超过2450亿元，利税总额240亿元，总资产超过2350亿元。
房地产开发经营作为绿地集团的核心主导产业，开发规模、产品类型、品质品牌均处于全国领先地位，特别在超高层、大型城市综合体、高铁站商务区及产业园开发领域遥遥领先，目前建成和在建超高层城市地标建筑达17幢，其中4幢高度位列世界排名前十。
绿地集团房地产开发项目遍及上海、北京、天津、重庆、广州、南京、济南、青岛、合肥、南昌、苏州、杭州、宁波、武汉、长沙、郑州、成都、贵阳、西安、乌鲁木齐、银川、昆明、呼和浩特、太原、沈阳、大连、长春、哈尔滨等全国25个省市自治区70座城市。2012年，随着绿地韩国旅游健康城开工建设，绿地集团正式开启海外投资发展新征程，在澳大利亚悉尼市中心开发超高层建筑，绿地自主酒店品牌也已成功落户德国高端酒店，并即将赴泰国及欧洲等国家进行城市综合开发。国内外市场拓展齐头并进，为绿地房地产主业的持续发展进一步夯实了基础。

盘锦银行、锦州银行、上海农村商业银行等，并发起成立了中国注册资本额最大的小额贷款公司，以及融资担保公司、典当公司等。此外，绿地集团在商业、酒店、建筑、汽车服务等产业也具有较大规模和较强实力。
