社会地位简而言之，就是人们在一个社会的等级或阶层序列中的位置。地位是人类永恒追求的目标,是人的存在性意义之源。社会地位的获取有哪些方式呢？由于社会结构的制约,不同时代、不同阶级（阶层）的人们具有不同的机遇结构,他们追求地位的方式也有所不同。在以前的社会，地位的获取大多依靠家族世袭和手中的权力，但是在现代社会中每个有头脑和有思想的人都能看出，获取社会地位的方式变的更多，越来越多人的社会地位和声望取决于个人的职业、教育程度、经济实力等方面，而不仅仅依赖权力。比如，教师和医生相对其他的职业有更高的社会地位，高学历的人比低学历的人的社会地位要高，富人的社会地位比穷人高。
