Having once started reading this fiction, I was completely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book.As the saying goes, “Well begun, half done”.At the beginning of the story, just like many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client.However, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client’s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it.As is known to all, vivid depiction is eential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure’s characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic and attractive.Therefore, trying to present a “real world” to his readership, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the original “Holmes series”, has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of Dr.Watson, a character not so specialized in discovering the truth hidden behind the enigmatic happenings as Holmes but so loyal to Sherlock Homes as a friend that he always accompanies Holmes wherever he goes.In this way, he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book, Apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reasonable, is certainly an outstanding one.After all, except the author himself, who knows that the Duke’s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the Duke’s bastard? In addition, who knows that the Duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before Holmes solves this complicated problem? Yet, surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well.While enjoying this wonderful story, I could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author’s gorgeous writing skill.Closing my eyes, I can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film.Not until then did I understand why the Japanese cartoon film Detective Conan used this “Conan” as the name of its hero.

The Legend of 1900 told us an extraordinary story about a genius whose name is 1900,given by a sailor who adopted him on the ship when he was an abandoned little baby.He has showed great talent in piano and gained good reputation during his life on the ship Virginian.However,he didn’t make it to go to the land even for once in his life.He was born on the ship without name, without birthday, without home addre.The sea, the shipand the piano can conclude all of his life that everything else is too strange and complexfor him to handle.The first time he struggled to make his mind to go off the board was resulted from a girl’s invitation whom he has feelings for.Disappointed to us, he finally give up going off the board on the half way to the land when he saw the countle mansions and streets.In the end, 1900 chose to die with the ship instead of go to the land for survive.This ending is sad, but not surprising.All the evidence has pointed to his choice although it was a big pity in the audiences’ view.Along with the sorrowful atmosphere, the movie also brought us a controversialquestion about whether it is a tragedy for 1900.On the one hand, such an outstanding genius deserves more than dying on the ship just for his addiction to the ship.A brighter future was just lying before him that he can step on the road to the new world by going off the board with a little more courage.In our value conception, it’s hard to understand his choice to stay in his little world by the sacrifice of his love, the promising career and even his life.We attribute his misfortune to his timidity to accept a new circumstance.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat.Of course, the Comte de G.and Comte de N.wanted her body and appearance.The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter.If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself.And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men.I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.
