M3U3 Vocabularies and expreions

1.take over 接管,接受

take over the busine接管生意

take over the driving 接过来开车

Let me take over the driving so that you can have a nap.让我来开车这样你可以小睡一会儿。

【拓展】 含take的常用短语:

1)take up表示“拿起;占据;开始从事”。

take up weapons to fight against enemies拿起武器与敌人斗争;

take up painting开始绘画;

take up too much space占据太多的空间。

2)take in表示“吸收;接受,理解;欺骗”。

take in proper nutrition 吸收适当的营养;

I can’t take in what he said.我不明的他说的。

He tried to play a trick on me, but I wasn’t take in.他想捉弄我,但我没上当。

3) take on 表示“呈现;雇用;承担”。

take on a new look呈现新面貌;

take on more workers 雇用更多的工人。

I don\'t reckon I\'ll take on extra work.我想我不会承担额外的工作。

2.pour [pɔ:]

vt.1) cause to run倒,灌,注

She poured herself another cup of tea.她为自己又倒了一杯茶。

2) supply in large amounts or quantities 倾注;大量投入;大量生产

They have poured money into the tourist industry.他们已经把大笔钱投入了旅游业。

3) 倾吐,诉说

pour sth to sb 向某人倾述某事

pour sth out(将某事物)尽情表达出来

She often pours her troubles to friends.她经常向朋友们倾诉自己的苦恼。

They also wanted to pour out their own bitterne.他们也想倾吐自己的苦水。

vi.1) move in large numbers倾泻,涌流

The crowd poured out of the concert hall.人群从音乐厅涌出来。

2) rain heavily (雨)倾盆而降

Bring your raincoat; it’s pouring outside.带上雨衣,外面在下大雨。

3.flee [fli:]

vi.1) run away quickly逃,逃走[(+from/to)]

The robbers fled when they saw the police.强盗看见警察便逃跑了。

The man flee to the mountain to avoid the conscription.

为了逃避徵兵,那个人躲到山里去了。

2) disappear 消失;消散

Night had fled.夜已消逝。

vt.escape from 逃离;逃避

He was lucky to flee the burning hotel.他很幸运逃出了失火的旅馆。

4.destroy (destroyed, destroyed)

vt.1) do away with, cause the destruction or undoing of 破坏,毁灭

The fire destroyed the house.大火毁了那栋房子。

It seems he\'s destroying himself.他似乎正在毁灭自己。

2) to kill the animals (because they are not needed or ill)(因动物有病或不再需要而)消灭, 杀死

The injured dog had to be destroyed.这只受伤的狗要予以人道毁灭。

n.destruction

The enemy bombs caused widespread destruction.敌人的炸弹造成大面积的破坏。 In the last two centuries, the human destruction of ecosystem has led to the daily extinction of 20 species.在过去的两个世纪里,人类对生态系统的破坏使得每天有20个物种灭绝。

【区别】

a.destroy 强调以具有摧毁或杀伤性的力量把某物彻底毁掉,不可修复。

Why, you may wonder, should spiders be our friends? Because they destroy so many insects,…你也许会觉得奇异,蜘蛛怎么竟是我们的朋友?因为它们毁灭那么多的昆虫。

5.ruin

vt.1) destroy completely; damage irreparably 破坏,毁掉

The storm ruined our wheat.暴风雨毁坏了我们的小麦。

This behavior will ruin your chances of winning the election.

这种行为将会毁掉你赢选举的机会。

2) cause total lo of money to 使破产,使沦落

I was ruined by that law case.I\'m a ruined man.我被那场官司搞垮了,现在已经倾家荡产。 n.1) destruction毁坏,毁灭,灭亡

This news meant the ruin of all our hopes.这消息使我们的一切希望都破灭了。

2) an irrecoverable state of devastation and destruction 破败、坍塌或毁坏的状态

The church has fallen into ruin.那教堂已破败不堪。

3) a ruined building废墟;遗迹

The abbey is now a ruin.那座修道院现已成废墟。

Many ruins of Roman date are to be seen in the south of France.许多古罗马时期的遗迹可以在法国南部看到。

6.remain

1) vi.stay or be left停留,留下

Some birds fly to the south but a few remain.一些鸟飞往南方,而有些鸟留了下来。

When the others had gone, Mary remained and put everything back in place.其他人走后,Mary留了下来,并整理好一切。

2)l.v.(系动词) continue to be 仍然是;保持

If you won’t eat you’ll have to remain hungry.如果你不吃,那就只好饿着了。

Please remain seated while the plane is taking off.飞机起飞时请保持坐着。

【注意1】remain还可以作名词,常用复数remains“剩余物;残留物;遗迹”;

I visited the remains of an old castle when I was in England.

【注意2】现在分词remaining可用作前置定语,如:the remaining money剩余的钱(=the

money left)。

7.beneath [bi\'ni:θ]

prep.1) below or under; to a lower position than在…的下方,在…的底下

They sheltered beneath their umbrellas.他们躲到了伞下。

2) be inferior to (表示比较)不及, 次于

Richard is far beneath Henry in intelligence.理查的智力远不及亨利。

3) under the control or influence of (表示环境)在…影响之下, 由于

We shall do well beneath his guiding hand.我们会在他的领导下做得很好。

4) not worthy of 与……不相称

Don\'t do anything that is beneath you.不要做与你身份不符的事。

be beneath不值得

8.complain [kəm\'plein]

vt.& vi.(+about)

1) expre discontent, displeasure, or unhappine 抱怨,诉苦;投诉

She often complains that he is dishonest.她常埋怨说他不诚实。

I have to complain to the manager about it.对这件事我不得不向经理申诉。

2) make a formal accusation; bring a formal charge 控告

He complained to the police that the boys had stolen his apples.

他向警方控告那些男孩偷了他的苹果。

n.complaint

This is a cause of complaint.这是抱怨的原因。

Our neighbours lodged [lɔdʒ] vt.提出 a complaint against us with the police.我们的邻居向警方控告我们。

9.historical

adj.1) of or relating to the study of history 历史(学)的

He gave all his historical papers to the library.

他把所有有关历史的文件都送给了图书馆。

2) having once lived or existed or taken place in the real world as distinct from being legendary历史上(存在)的

The book is based on historical events.这本书是根据历史事件写成的。

【比较】

historic adj.important in history 历史上著名(或重要)的;具有历史意义的

They were lured by a curiosity to see the historic spot.他们被好奇心驱使去看古迹。 This is a historic occasion.这是具有重大历史意义的时刻。

10.declare [di\'klεə]

vt.1) announce publicly or officially宣布,宣告;声明

declare war on/against … 对。。。宣战

declare bankruptcy 宣告破产

declare…(to be) sth/adj.宣布。。。是。。。

I declare the meeting open.我宣布本次会议开始。

He declared that the meeting has been postponed.他宣布会议已延期了。

2) state firmly断言, 宣称, 表明

He declared the story (to be) false.他断言那篇报导是假的。

He declared (that) he was right.他力陈他是对的。

11.in memory of作为对某人的纪念

He founded the charity in memory of his late wife.

他兴办那个慈善机构以纪念他已故的妻子。

【比较】

in honor of 为了向…表示敬意

A banquet was given in honor of the distinguished guests.宴会是为了向贵宾们致敬而举行的。 in praise of 赞扬…

The teacher spoke in praise of the child for his honesty.他很诚实, 老师表扬了他。 in celebration of 为庆祝...

People wear new clothes in celebration of the new year.人们穿上新衣庆祝新年。

in support of 支持,证明…正确

I\'ll mention some facts in support of my argument.我要举出几个事实来证明我的理论。 in favor of 赞成...;支持...;有利于...

in hopes/the hope of 怀着…的希望

12.no doubt

adv.admittedly, to be sure 无疑,确实

No doubt you are wrong.无疑你是错的。

【其他搭配】beyond doubt/without doubt 无疑的(地),确实的(地)

There’s no doubt that …毫无疑问。。。

No doubt + 从句多半,很可能

No doubt she was disturbed by the noise.多半是噪音惊扰了她。

13.come down with vt.to get or catch (an infectious illne) 得,患(病)(无被动语态) I think I’m coming down with a cold.我想我得感冒了。

14.aware

adj.1)having knowledge or consciousne 意识到的, 知道的,明白的 (be aware of)

He doesn\'t seem to be aware of the problems.他好像没有意识到这个问题。

I’m quite aware how you feel now.我很清楚你现在的感受。

2)alert and fully informed有。。。认识的

She’s politically aware.它有政治意识。

n.awarene 察觉,觉悟;意识

Environmental awarene has increased over the years.

这些年来人们的环境意识增强了。

There is a general awarene that smoking is harmful.

人们普遍认识到吸烟有害健康。

We hold the meeting to promote people’s awarene of protecting the earth.我们开这个会就是要提高人们保护地球的意识。

15.court

n.1) 庭院, 院子

The court is very dirty.这个院子非常脏。

2) 法庭, 法院

The matter is still pending in court.这案子还在法院中悬而未决。

go to court上法院,打官司

in court出庭,在法庭上

take…to court 将。。。告上法庭

out of court

a.不经法庭听审;私下

They are trying to settle the squabble out of court.他们正试图私下解决争端。b.不屑一顾;不值得考虑

The price would put it out of court for most private buyers.

这个价格会使大部分私人买主望而却步。

3) 宫廷, 宫室

He was said to have served at court for years.据说他曾在宫廷中任职多年。

4) 球场
